In Jack's last footsteps-my final video tribute to the late, great, Jack Hargreaves.

  • I must have pressed the wrong button when uploading my part 2 of the trip to Lindisfarne, so it came out on the wrong day. However, it gave me the chance to publish this final video in my 4part series looking at places in Dorset where Jack Hargreaves filmed for Out of Town and Old Country, on the right day, and get back in sequence. It's been an honour, and also quite humbling, to make this short series, and to have garnered such favourable comments from many people. Thank you, I really appreciate that. In this video I do the "walk round the pond", and stand at the point where his ashes were scattered, as well as take a short look at the hamlets involved. Belchalwell is an isolated place, and the strong winds made the churchyard seem even more so. But, standing up on Bullbarrow Hill, overlooking Blackmoor Vale, it is easy to see why he loved the place so much. Jack gave so much pleasure to so many people over the years with his interesting programmes, and I hope, with my short series, that I have conveyed some of my respect for him, and the enthusiasm he gave me for things of the countryside, which only enhanced my feelings for my rural roots. Thank you Jack, and RIP. Hard to believe he's been gone 30 years this year, I think.

I'm Jack's stepson. J came to live with my mum and my sister in 1948 when I was rising 6. What a moving tribute. Thank you. Over the last 20 years since I left my academic work I've been working to get more of my stepdad's broadcasts published, including a wealth of 'Out of Town' location film, shot by Stan Brehaut, in rusting tins in our garage that have not been seen since broadcast. I've worked with various licensees - Delta and Network both now insolvent - and done a deal with Talking Pictures TV to show 13 OOT episodes weekly from 6.30pm on Monday 5th Dec 2024.

I am deeply honoured and humbled by your kind comments. It means a lot that his own family have liked my short series of tributes, which were done out of great respect. You can be assured I will be glued to the Talking Pictures broadcasts, and, if I've understood correctly, these will not be any that have been shown on another TH-cam channel?

Great opening scene of you walking around the pond. The landscape, and churches, always betray specific details if one has an eye to find them, Jacqueline certainly has. Delightful tribute, Bernie, of a man who was a well respected character to us both. Damn, that was a windy day! Good to see some livestock out and about. Bulbarrow is just a few miles from my sister's farm. Touching video.

Thank you so much, Andrew. Your kind words mean a lot. The whole series seems to have been well viewed and well received, which has both surprised and delighted me. I had wondered where in Dorset your sister lived. No wonder you were able to get to Ernie's so easily. As an aside, I think this film, for the first time, clearly shows the difference between wind SOUND and wind NOISE. And, yes, that wind was bad.

I would have loved to ask them. But, sadly, it was such a terribly windy day that noboy was in the garden, and I felt it would be very wrong to go and ring the doorbell. I have found out that, when they bought it, a quantity of Jack's tools were still in the corner of the shed where he filmed.

Not sure that church had stone facing, looks more like cement which is doing tremendous damage to the building. The fad for cement rather than using lime for pointing and rendering has been a disaster for conservation. Great show, felt I was there, huge fan of Jack, many thanks.

If you can see the alter from an outside window then it could be a leper squint a similar arrangement can be seen at Tarrant Rushton church. (There may have been a leper colony in the area)

This particular window was a bit large for a leper squint. None of the windows were stained so it was possible to see inside from most of them. The one I filmed the altar from was open ajar. Not sure if deliberatley left, stuck, or someone had tried to get in and failed.
