The flashing red light is for the crossing, which is (I believe) an AOCL+B crossing. Previously it was an AOCL - Automatic Open Crossing Locally Monitored; so it had no barriers to protect it, just lights. After a couple of incidents, including a train that had a car drive into the side of it(!), they converted it to have barriers, but they are just an add on to the old open crossing, hence the +B, rather than ABCL (automatic barrier crossing locally monitored) The "locally monitored" means that the signaller doesn't have any indications for the crossing, so it could be entirely taken away and they wouldn't know. This is where the flashing signal comes in. It changes to flashing white when the crossing equipment has operated correctly, the driver sees this and knows the lights are flashing. Most crossings are indicated in the signal box, it is only on cheap job lines like this one, with its quirky signalling (tokenless block) that you'd find such crossings. Because the driver has to observe the white light, they are very slow in terms of speed restrictions over them, usually about 25mph.

Hi Bernie, I think I saw on one of the signs or machines you showed us that you could download a timetable. Not much use if a person doesn't have a smartphone though. I for one prefer the old days where information was on paper and didn't rely on technology.

Great video Bernie I love the look of the seafront it is nice hearing the sea we love walking on a beach and listening to the waves ,Stratford is nice but it gets so busy and I totally agree with the price of entry it’s a big rip off to get in which is a shame as I`am sure they would get more in if it was cheaper ,thank you for sharing also nice to see Jackie in there as well 👍❤️

I used to love Out of Town as a small boy in the 1960's. Jack with his pipe had an incomparable manner as a presenter of the countryside. I've learnt much more about his life through videos like yours in recent years.

That's an interesting model. I hadn't realised it appeared in BR green with the later emblem - I can only remember seeing photos of it as delivered in black. I seem to recall reading it was tried out on the Southern Region, for example on the Oxted line.

I shall soon be sending off for some tiny webcams Bernie - I'll send you a couple - you can tape them to the engines for cab's eye view or wherever. Buying them in bulk gets me a better deal. They are really tiny and Bluetooth. Look like you've got hours of fun ahead of you. @momandsontrainrailfans is something that might interest you. Americans always seem to do things so big don't they - i guess they have the space.

Yep, Durham is a nightmare on warm days when the streets are packed. It's a city that is NOT pedestrian friendly although it HAS improved, if you can believe that. As an ex-resident I pretty much hate the newer buildings, they just don't sit right with me at all. It's a pity you didn't get up to Palace Green and see the cathedral and castle as it tends to be quieter there, even in the summer months. Enjoyed the video 🙂
