The reason Captain Marvel wears the Kree symbol is simple, because the actual Captain Marvel, the male one who died of cancer and who never existed in the MCU, WAS a Kree. He was like the Dances With Wolves guy but humans were his natives. He rebelled against his own people for us, and he wore the symbol out of pride, and an attempt to show that not all Kree were like the ones he opposed. Comics Carol wears it in tribute to him. Why MCU Carol wears it, now that's a complete mystery. I guess she likes the pretty star shape and it fits her space theme.

So you’re telling me the story could be interesting if it was depicted like the comic instead of pandering with a woman empowerment narrative and casting a delusional moron like Brie Larson whose very face is unbearable and brain couldn’t be any more disconnected from reality. Got it

It’s funny, the watchmen addresses a overpowered broken character by breaking down how powerless and lonely a character like that would feel. How a character like that would feel so disconnected from humanity that it truly asks the question, “what makes you human and what holds you to caring about the small short little lives of these mortal beings?”.
They could have done that here, but asking for any depth from the MCU is a laughable idea at this point is a joke.

The reason why the OG Avengers struggle was so noble and bombastic was cos a lot of them were mortal. Most of the Avengers can be taken out with a well placed, well timed headshot from a gun. Yet still they fight, battling weapons with superior tech, gods with superior power, and beings with better armies anyway, because it’s the right thing. Taking hits, bleeding on the battlefield, and trucking on anyway. You know, *being a hero.* it’s what makes Captain Americas “I can do this all day” so damn iconic. He only says it when he’s eaten a few punches, to tell you his body will give out before his mind does.
But when you’re the biggest and bestest and strongest and toughest and fastest EVER, what’s the struggle, the stakes? I’m not worried about that hero, cos nothing can hurt them. Its just a matter of time before they win.
    It’s just boring.

    • @ManabiLT
      @ManabiLT ปีที่แล้ว +6

Yep, even Superman was given a weakness in kryptonite so he wasn't completely overpowered. Captain Marvel has no weaknesses apparently, and is stronger than anyone else in the MCU (quite possibly stronger than every hero in the MCU combined)... except when the writers want to ignore that to do a spiffy fight scene or something. There's no tension, no drama, you _know_ she's going to win, because there's no possible way she can lose.

I haven’t watched the video (yet), but the reason I believe most of Marvel’s recent movies have suffered is that they put no emphasis on quality villains.
The Avengers level threats? Loki? Thanos? Kang? They all receive not only incredible storylines but impeccable character development. To the point where freaking THANOS, the Mad Titan, has viewers who actually agree with his reasoning.
Every other Marvel movie? Outside of Killmonger and a couple others, they’ve all been largely “villains of the week.” And yes, that’s very comic-esque. Here’s the big bad for someone to beat up until the Avengers level threat arrives. But this trivializes soooooooo many quality rogues in many Marvel comics. Clearly the center of the story is the hero. But every great hero needs a great villain. A great antagonist. Someone to elevate the story from “a day in the life of a superhero” to “now THIS is a story worth telling.”

Shit fam, the first Iron Man had Tony being a womanizing misogynist and easing off that lifestyle choice as he changed his life.
We (mostly) all know treating women like sex objects and not people is fucked up, and Tony started like that, then moved to being less like that over several movies.

Okay I think that what they tried to do or at least implied to do with captain marvel is interesting
That since she's the most powerful character in marvel universe her story themes and character plot stems from the fact that alot of her actions hold deep consequences and her having to deal with those consequences but no they are just brushed aside
Remember how motivated Tony stark felt after he found out the true consequences of his arms dealings, to the point that he himself decided to take care of that problem and put his life on the line even tho he was just a man in an armor, that being enough to change his way of life and his morals
Yes now compare that to captain marvel and her actions having resulted in planets being destroyed and whole cultures being left stranding, yet the writers don't apply the same character growth to her for some reason

    • @TheNightman.

She's not the most powerful character, she has no character or plot, she literally has nothing. tbf, comics Carol is just as all over the place for the most part. She got her powers from some wish-granting space magic device because she wanted to be like her idol, Captain Mar'Vell of the Kree (aka the original Captain Marvel). For the longest time she was more of a D-lister as "Miss Marvel", with no writer knowing what to do with her, even though her power set makes her one of the heavier hitters - especially during some of her space adventures, including her time as the original Binary. Until relatively recently, she was mostly the Captain Marvel fan girl, who was drifting around the Marvel landscape looking for validation. Then she finally decided to take up the mantle of her idol (after it had passed through half a dozen other hands), and immediately started the second Civil War event by arresting tons of people before they even committed any crimes, based on some young guy's precognitive visions from the future. Now she's mainly in reserve for when a writer wants to invoke the heavy hitters of earth, but not as much that it would end their story quite yet...

This phase was a failure. And disappointing because i loved capt marvel. This story should have been about her in space and going through a dark story the challenged her psychology and BECAUSE of that challenged her to the point of needing help i.e the other 2 marvels and needing the aid for some more male popular character set up and an actual selling villain. I KNEW as soon as i had no idea who the villain was this was going to bomb. If they would have done these things and made this story more of a downer note then it would have sold. People love spiderman 2 for a reason, yes spiderman sells because hes a broke, struggling superhero, but the point is that we love these heros not of their powers, but what they do with it creativly through challenges. Example: Batman and Superman. Hate people say superman is boring not realizing that he could easily rip off his bosses head and correcting him for talking down on him everday but thats not the point of superman. Its the fact that he could but doesn't. This movie was "made for women by women" and it shows

I finally watched the movie and to be honest, the biggest issue that I see narratively with the movie is that short runtime. When the water planet is attacked, you never see what happens to them, we just jump to The Marvels jetting to the space station to save Earth’s sun…And the connection to Ms. Marvels powers that the bracelets actually have. Whereas the Ms. Marvel series made it seem as though she gets the powers from the bracelets, but when Dar Benn takes it from her, she still has powers. Once Dar Benn is defeated, Ms. Marvel doesn’t take/use both bracelets. There’s also some explanations that the audience needed going in such as jump points and some of the small details that people may not remember. Now, the singing planet was added for levity and agree that it could’ve had the same impact if it wasn’t a musical planet, but I think the biggest issue is that we spent zero time there. All of the time and money spent with the evacuations from SABER could been spent with the water planet, like the evacuations could’ve taken place off screen. That would’ve saved like 20 minutes of screen time. But again the bulk of this comes down to the decision to make the movie the shortest in the MCU. There’s just too must not fleshed out and or explained.
Dar Benn’s motivations I think are actually much better than most of the MCU villains who are either just outright evil, or think themselves to be God. But I do agree a LESS complicated plot and more time to flesh out what plot there is would have made this stronger. That and a tonal consistency. I blame the fans who hated the darkness Thor 2 and thus brought the ONSLAUGHT of MCU comedies. The one criticism I would say about arguing that Carol committed genocide, is that you also said that the people on the planet were fine, struggling, but fine. I think more than anything the clarity of what actually happened changes how the characters and Carol herself views her actions. The Sun was destroyed accidentally and she didn’t have a way to fix it (that she was aware of) and she didn’t try to help them relocate the same way she wanted to help the Skrulls. That could’ve been simply mitigated by saying the destruction of their Sun happened recently, and Carol is dealing with the fallout in realtime. Saying this happened 30 years ago, and everyone on the planet that we see is still alive makes it difficult to decide whether or not to fault her. I’m just convinced that the writers are just over worked and underpaid, because everything I’ve listed could’ve been fixed and resulted in a much better, cheaper and longer film.

Honestly, I don't think Monica was even needed in this movie. I think it would've been a cool project where Ms. Marvel learned that her 'shero' isn't everything she thought she was.
Carol is carrying around guilt for her mistake that granted her the 'Annihilator' title. This could've made for a GREAT concept. Kind of like Peter & Tony's dynamic in Homecoming. Spidey wanted so bad to prove he was up to become an Avenger, but screwed up big time. Kamala thinks the world...no the universe of Carol but she screwed up majorly to the point of whole planets paying the price.
We could've finally gotten some true character and development for Captain Marvel, but instead we got...this...

It's interesting how so many seemingly minor inconsistencies and poor choices in the growing MCU have compounded together to make this "shared universe" just feel pointless. Consider one small example from The Marvels: Kamala Khan's inexplicable fighting ability. She was a teenager who couldn't even catch a ball in gym class in her own TV show, yet somehow for no reason she is suddenly bouncing off of walls in fights with the coordination of a ninja in this movie. It's such a missed opportunity for her to have been clumsy and inexperienced when fighting trained Kree soldiers, and later in the story she could have learned about physical combat from her fellow heroes. But more importantly, her unearned and unexplained abilities undermines the meaning of having fighting skills for every other Marvel hero in the entire MCU. Good characterization requires distinguishable strengths and weaknesses. Think back to the Avengers, when Captain America coordinated the team in the final battle. Thor is a thousand-year old warrior with several human lifetimes of experience in battles, but he naturally acquiesced to the charisma and leadership skills that Captain America displayed. Hawkeye and Black Widow deferred in the same natural way, despite their own knowledge and experience as SHIELD agents. Tony butted heads with Steve and tried to go off on his own at many points, but ultimately learned the benefit of working within a team, and he even grew to respect Cap.
In the early MCU, each character is distinguishable from each other. Captain America represents courage and leadership. Iron Man represents ingenuity. Thor represents power. Hulk is brute strength. Hawkeye and Black Widow are stealth and finesse. They each have strengths and weaknesses that create interesting character dynamics and compelling stories. That has been lost now, unfortunately, and you point out several examples of why in this exploration. The whole franchise has just grown unwieldy at this point, and it's doubly bad when the poor choices that lead to inconsistencies also make everything and everyone feel so blah. There's simply no point to it anymore; there's no life in anything that is done or released. It's just...content. That's it.

Ive always thought that Marvel was setting Carol up to be the main bad in a Civil War 2, like the comics.

    >aliens have technology that pushes the limits of human imagination and allows them to travel dimensions
    >uses it to un-sustainably steal from productive civilizations and superheroes who can kill them
    >can't just synthesize what they need or move somewhere that doesn't suck
This shit is laughable bro. If you think for even a minute in the MCU, it all crumbles. Nobody even once thought that Thanos could just use the stones to make more resources lmao.

I have an idea how to have made the marvels a better movie
Instead of having them switch places go full freaky Friday and say that every time they use their powers they switch bodies and maybe they can show it in the color of their eyes or something
That makes it so so that captain marvel switches with kamala so you have brie Larson acting like a fan girl tween and you have Iman acting like a stoic series person, that would be more interesting and that would prove that brie Larson has more than one emotion 😶 for captain marvel
But no that would mean trying and Disney dosnt do trying

Most comic book/movie fans are overwhelming men. Bad writing is half of the issue, but the other half is all these female leads and female audience focused films.
If you make a film aimed at a 2% demographic of people; you're film isn't going to get anyone else to come see it. Nothing wrong with female characters. Early mcu black widow and Wanda were great and not forced. All the new stuff is painfully forced and twisted to want to please the minority of fans.
Get back to the basics! DC did a great job (for a hot second) at this with The Batman and Joker. Low budget, low cgi, and just no BS pandering.

Symbiote Spiderman isn't very good writing, the whole Clone Saga with Ben Reilly was pretty bad too
Injustice is the best series I think I've ever read tho

Dead On Arrival. The only thing I'm looking forward to see is if the X-Men does come in the MCU, i'm hoping to see Rogue finally put Carol in a coma. But even then my expectations are low.

Also knew this movie was in for a bad news when the movie previews that I normally get just did not happen. Review embargos, changing the trailers to represent the movies people liked, the writing was on the wall before the movie was released.

I cant believe we went from passionate interpetations of heroes from comic books, to cash grab super hero flicks from the late 2000's, to passionate film making to great super hero masterpieces to bring the stories to life, back to cashgrabs. This time it feels way worse. At least you can find something to appreciate in spider man 3, daredevil, x men 3, the fatastic four movies, heck even electra. But phase 4 is irredeemable. Went from being hopeful for a course correction to i hope to god they die off before they butcher secret wars. I refuse to allow them to use it as a reboot device. Hickmans secret wars lead up and finale deserve its own 3 phase road map
