This is what Nancy Wilson has to say about the song
"It’s a ‘Ulysses’-type song. It describes the journey of waiting for the wind to kick up in your life, and then it does, and then it takes you on more of a wild ride than you ever expected to be on - a life-threatening wild ride. And you’re a changed person forever. You’ll never look at life the same way again. There’s a sweeping philosophical symbolism to it. It’s also got this dissonance of a guitar intro, which gives way to a big storm that sweeps you through the song and leaves you out the other side of the song as if your life has changed. I realize that’s a lot of highfalutin imagery, but I do think that’s what the song achieves. [Laughs.]”

I've also read that it's a song about waiting for inspiration to hit. They were on a writing retreat with with Sue Ennis and they talked about the Mistral Winds of France that blow down from the north and how it could be used as a metaphor for creative inspiration finally arriving.

John Slop - congrats - you just discovered one of the greatest unknown and underrated tunes of all time. Always loved this song - moves me every single time I hear it.

First time I heard Mistral Wind on the radio it sent actual chills up and down my spine. And still does, to this day.

Ann Wilson's finest vocal performance... I was 18 years old when this album came out, and I was madly in love with Ann... Led Zeppelin and Rush comparisons are valid.

My favorite Heart song. They are incredible. I always felt she was singing about a man in comparison to how a sailor might feel...or a woman waiting for a man sailing....or a man who came and left in a whirlwind. She always held the wheel (strong female), but "I let the wind steal my power". He swept her away like the sea can sweep away the very sailor who loves it.

This is a great version but the best one imo is the one from Alive In Seattle, the live DVD from 2003.

I think the live version from Greatest Hits / Live is the absolute best -- I love the gong crash when the song kicks in on that version.

On the Dog & Butterfly album, the song before this one, "Nada One," is really good too.

Gorgeous song and yes it had it's Rush moments. Zeppelin was a big influence. This whole album is fantastic. Anne Wilson has such an amazing voice!

Jerry Cantrell really liked this song. Now that I think about it. This song is basically a great blueprint for AIC sound.

One of my all time favorite songs! You should really listen to the live version! Fantastic! Recommendations, "Just the Wine", "Dream of the Archer", and their cover of "Stairway to Heaven"!

I’d always loved this song but mainly because of the live version that can found on their greatest hits album. That was the version I had first become acquainted with. Without question, Ann Wilson has one of the strongest voices in the history of female rock musicians. And Mistral is easily one of Heart’s finest tunes.

Everything was analog. Guitar tones were sculpted by real hands not digital laziness.

Great reaction! Funny you mention Rush. I was playing this song back when I was a freshman in college. My roommate - who never heard this - mentioned similarities to Rush. Although quite a bit before my time I think their 70s stuff was way ahead of its time it terms of sound - most of their music around that time holds up real well today! If you are looking for more Heart I would recommend Magic Man - the studio album version. Way ahead of its time in 75 and became their first Billboard top 10 hit. Crazy on You is a great one as well. Awesome reaction!
