Maertens did an "illegal" bike change on Koppenberg and knew he was DQ'd before race end. He didn't contest DeVlaminck and I imagine Roger didn't really relish the win that much - so no celebration.
Max Occhipinti I totally agree with you, Maertens had so much talent, he could have win the Five Big Classics, like De Vlaeminck, Merckx and Van Looy dit.
That year Freddy Maertens was disqualified in the Fleche Wallone too - another win. He dominated 1976&77 but in the end - if you look more carefully - he has never won a big classic - none of the Five Monuments of cycling. Only minor classics and 2 WC. A real pity if you think he had so much power.
Maertens won the 1976 Vuelta with 13 out of 18 stage wins, still a record today. He won 8 Tour stages in 1976, a record he shares with only Merckx and Charles Pélissier. Maertens could have won the Tour and Giro several times. He crashed during a sprint in the Giro of 1977, which he would have won, having already claimed 7 stage victories.
Thanks for sharing such at great memories

Didn't Freddy fail a doping test too, which meant the win wouldn't have gone to him anyway that year? Or am I mistaken?

Non credo ,in salita non andava molti
What are the cops positioned on the climb like that? Just taking advantage of their access to cheer on the riders? Looks so strange
Crowd control.
No, they're trying to prevent the riders from taking the easy side of the cobble road..
Freddy era dopato. Fu infatti squalificato. Freddy usava spesso sostanza
De vlaeminck mai preso per doping 20 anni di carriera. Un vero esempio. Freddy spesso squalificato per doping
