What are your thoughts and experiences with WhistlePig? Are there any other bottles you recommend we try to change our minds? Drop your suggestions below!
My dad, brother and I got into whiskey from their 12 yr. It used to be ~110 a bottle before 2020 and was not really worth it then. The price has gone up to I think 150 and I’ve seen picks for 170. I’d never buy another bottle but I do feel like it’s good for beginners. We used to joke and ask each other for a boss hog and just ended up getting one for my dad’s retirement this year. Will update you when we open it in April.
I live in upstate NY State near Vermont, so it’s been around for a while in these parts. I have always referred to it as Dickel Pig because of the Flintstone vitamin note you mentioned. I believe and appreciate that it has an audience. I also believe and appreciate that I am not part of that audience.
I like my whiskey videos like I like my bourbon ……. Honest!!! You all always deliver. Thank You!!! BTW i don’t even pick up and look at a WP bottle anymore.
The best whiskey coming out of Vermont (VT) is from Lost Lantern. They are amazing blenders and totally transparent about the source of their products. I have a bottle of their Soaring Spice which is from Frey Ranch and a bottle of their Far Flung Rye which is a blend of several Midwest distillery’s. Not a gimmick like WhistlePig. And would agree with Kurt that Vermont is a truly beautiful state! Keep up the great work!
I've had two bottles of Whistle Pig and at least two Whistle Pig flights at the bar. I haven't found one that is anything to write home about. If it were closer to the pricing of Bulleit, I'd probably buy them a few times a year
I have only had two Whistle Pig... the 10 that you reviewed and a Barrel Pick from our local Store and so far it is not one that I will rush out and buy again. I agree with you on the mineral taste and I am not a mineral guy.
As y'all were saying, I don't go to casinos to gamble either. Rarely, do I go into a liquor store to gamble also! I might not be a bourbon connoisseur but, I don't have any offerings that I don't thoroughly enjoy! Great show as always! Cheers!
I love a lot of the Wild Turkey offerings. Brown Forman products are nice also. Of course, Buffalo Trace and Barton's 1792 Bottled in Bond and Full Proof. There are a few others as well but, just the same, I have no desire to chase all of the hyped FOMO offerings that really may not live up to all the hoopla! Enjoy! Cheers!
@@kirklandeche937 I live in a state where it’s impossible to find stuff. So I stay $60 and under. 1792 BiB is a favorite but I only see it once in a blue moon here.
You are correct in as far as the availability of 1792. Other than the small batch, their other offerings are somewhat of an unicorn. Fortunately, by some miraculous stroke of luck, a few distributor releases have made a few of them available. Very few people recognize what they are, and for the most part, and there are very few secondary prices placed on them. Thank you. By a shere stroke of luck, I was able to find the Bottled in Bond for around $44, and the Full Proof around $47. I can't say that I'm expecting this to continue but, I'll be keeping my eyes open! Good luck in your neck of the woods! Cheers!
Trent, Vermont is great. Great skiing, wilderness, hiking, beer, scenery, and best of all, less humans. I make a trip up once every couple years or so just to relax.
Another great show Kurt and Trenton, I’m from Lake Co. Indiana (hey homies) but have lived in VT ( yes Trenton that’s the abbreviation for Vermont) for the last 23 years and I’ve only had a few pours and a couple of samples of different Whistle Pig offerings and None of them made me want to go out and buy a bottle. 🥃Cheers
Whistlepig’s barrel aged maple syrup is a 100% buy. I use it as a substitute for simple syrup in whiskey based cocktails and man it’s amazing. I think retail is 20-25, but keep in mind it’s real maple syrup. Not corn syrup.
LOL … I love the “raw” aspect of your videos. I definitely lean into the WP Ryes vs Bourbon. I do like to use the WP PiggyBack 6yr Rye for an Old Fashion. 🥃 Cheers!
I am not a gin drinker but my friends at Heritage Liquor got me to try Hat Trick by High Wire in Charleston. It’s a botanical gin and is Great! I even bought a bottle I liked it so much.
The 6 year Bourbon has a little spice to it that you would expect with the rye that is actually really good. It’s a decent daily pour at the price point.
I’m glad I only bought the 3-pack 50 ml “Piglets” to try. Also, kudos on the background music levels and choice - just the right volume to not being intrusive. Glad you said it was mineral-ly like Dickel.
I picked up the Alfa Romeo F1 collaboration rye finished with lychee and oolong tea. It’s a wild bottle and the price dropped to under 30 bucks. At that price, it’s worth it to have a very different bottle like that.
This offering from whistle pig is amazing! I had to grab 2 or 3 backups because when it's gone, it's gone, and I wanted to be able to enjoy this for a long time. Cheers.
@@MaZarems Agree on the Alfa Romeo bottle! I bought a bottle for my son because he has an Alfa Stelvio Quad suv and thought he would like the bottle. It turned out to be really good and surprisingly affordable!

"That's not for me bud". Ha ha. Don't think this one will be on my list to try. Minerality and Flintstone vitamin flavor is enough for me. Love your channel guys! Job well done.
My brother in law shared a bottle of WP with me that was on of their pricier releases. I was glad to try it and glad I didn’t spend my money on it. To be honest, it wasn’t bad in any way but, in my humble opinion, it also wasn’t noteworthy in any way that would make me seek it out. My other brother in law is a big Crown Royal fan and has shared those with me as well and it’s the same there. Happy to try them but also happy I didn’t spend my money on them.
Vermonter here checking in. WhistlePig is fine, but I've never been blown away by any of it. I also haven't tried a lot of it, mainly due to price point.
My in-laws took a trip to VT a few months ago. Knowing I’m a bourbon enthusiast, they got me one of the 6 year, 100 proof bourbons. I’ve really enjoyed it. I don’t have a super developed palate but it was definitely good. Yeah yeah gift-horse and all but I looked and it’s a $50 bottle in my area. That’s an expensive bottle for me. I don’t know if I would buy it for myself to replace the one I have. But I do like it.
Have found a 12 year old world rye here for a reasonable price so am thinking I will try that out. I haven't had anything from Whistlepig yet so this will be a first for me!
WhistlePig Piggyback Alfa Romeo is awesome (in the right setting...:)) Lychee and Oolong tea finished !!! please you must review... will either hate or love it ... join me on the love side, if you dare!
I’ve tried the 6 yr Rye and the 10 yr Rye and they were both vegetal. I don’t know if it was a specific batch issue, but wasn’t for me. The 12 year Old World Rye was something special though. It’s matured in three different barrel types and is the most interesting Rye I’ve tried to date. It usually runs about $140 where I’m at.
I have one bottle of bourbon in my collection but have not tried it yet. The lower end rye is not hard to find here though I imagine prices may go up significantly after Feb 1 making any American whiskey products a bit too expensive for me. Good thing I have a good stock of bottles to enjoy.
I'm from Vermont, so WP was part of my early whiskey education and I've had many versions. Lately I've focused on 10 yo cask strength single barrels, which sometimes carry reasonable price points and a few have been among the favorite ryes I've ever had. IMO their shelfers are very hit and miss these days though.
Thanks for the info. Its difficult to pull the trigger on $70.00 plus bottles not knowing their quality. Also I found a bottle that might beat your Hudson for worst whiskey. I purchased a MB Roland Dark Fired whiskey. Its absolutely horrible!! It would be fun to watch you try it and listen to your comments.
Got to try quite a few of them at a nice bar in Colorado while my wife and I were on vacation - they were nice, but not exactly something I would buy a bottle of. this was a place that specialized in rye and colorado whisky. Stranahans rye beat it very badly - unfortunately stranahans rye is often difficult to find outside of Colorado, as that's not their main product.
What's up pig definitely leans on The Brandy. I will say that my 12-year Old world rye is one of my favorite bottles I have ever owned! I'm definitely planning on saving up to get the 18 year.
Like you guys mentioned, this bottle sounds like marketing spin. Additionally, it seems like many “special releases” lately have been marginal bottles sold at $$$ based on spin to cover the investment spent on making/acquiring the barrel.
Hey from VT!!! Whistlepig to us is very much over priced . But if you ever make it here to visit, For a VT distillery try Mad River . But also there is the unique independent bottler called Lost Lantern. For Gin Barr Hill. Don’t forget all the maple bourbons here for cocktails makes a great old fashion.
Was at one of my local stores and the manager said he got a case of it and had one left, but their price was around $150. I passed and got a 10 year Penelope Estate instead. Glad I passed on the WP.
Whistlepig 10yr small batch rye and the 12yr old world rye are fantastic. They are on my favorites list. There may still be a 375ml 3-pac gift set available on line for $120.
Only a couple years in discovering what's out there. I have seen so many WhistlePigs and wonder if they are worthy of budget. I've passed because extra marketing/cliche (little pig) told me to be cautious. I also remember buying something under a store brand that was sourced juice with high mineral/Flintstone vitamins, and I want to avoid that. So yeah, I appreciate you all putting this out there for my sanity.
I like there juice I have a 15 yr single barrel and had a 10 yr single barrel that I thought was very good. This I think is toasted barrel might not be as good. Thanks for sharing.
I’ve had a few WhistlePigs, the best was a cask strength rye store pick a few years ago (so Canadian juice). Personally I think they would taste better if they didn’t proof them down so much. The Boss Hog IV was pretty nice though.
I was able to acquire a few bottles of Whistle Pig about 4 years ago. There are still 2 sitting in my inventory. Personally, I am not a big fan although I'm sure there are folks who love this. It's just no my bag.
WP 15 used to be my favorite when the price was around $250, now it’s well over $300 and I just tried the Michter’s 10 year Rye and it is the best Rye I have experienced. I won’t be paying for the WP any more because there are so many good rye’s at lower price points
I have not seen a Whistle Pig Bourbon yet, though my usual store always has 3 or 4 varieties of their Rye Whiskies. They tend to be on the higher price side, so I do not often buy them. I did pick up a Whistle Pig 6 year Rye not so long ago and remember that it was decent but I was not overly impressed with it... More like a nice $40 rye than the $60+ that it was. I would really like to see a good review of the most available product (no Boss Hog) under $100 to get a sense of how good their product for the average person is. If you'd like to do some Boss Hog, I think they would best be served by their own episode, since they are out of reach for many of us. I'd be interested to see it, but I doubt I'd be buying any, not any time too soon.
WhistlePig is name more associated with Rye than Bourbon. I've had several of their rye expressions (all on the lower end because I'm not rich), and most are pretty good, but I didn't know they made bourbon. I assume the toasts are describing the barrel toasting that only matters to a cooper. Do they have any description of the mash bill? Maybe it's a high-rye bourbon?
A friend of mine was kind enough to give me a sample of whistle pig 12 yr old world rye. He didn't care for it but wanted to share the experience. My tasting notes on the nose were sharpie marker and mosquito spray! No joke. It didn't follow through to the pallet, but for the price of the bottle I was really expecting more unfortunately...
I buy WhistlePig all the time. I buy the 6 year and use it straight and mix it with other bottles to smooth out the harsh taste some of those bottles have.
My brother in law is a huge Whistle Pig fan and he hyped up all of their bottles and being new to WP I tried the 6 year and it was okay, not super complex but there were some notes lingering. I tried to give them one more chance with the 100 proof 10 year and same results. Nothing amazing but not bad either. I just can't get over their price point, I'd much rather go buy a Pikesville for $50 which is an amazing bottle for the price!
Never had the bourbon from Whistlepig but the 6, 10, and 12 year ryes are all good to me. Would I pick them over anything else, I don’t know. But two of my brothers and my dad all now have the 6 year rye and not a one of us doesn’t enjoy it. Again probably not the best rye money can buy in the $40-$50 but I don’t regret it either. They have great marketing and the bottle pours and gimmicky stuff is fun to keep track of
I was in Manhattan back over the summer and the bar literally only had WhistlePig 6yr and Woodford Reserve, multiples side by side in stairstep rows behind the bar. So I drank WhistlePig 6yr and Woodford Reserve all night. It was pretty okay. I can't say that I went right home and bought a bottle for myself but I'm sure that day is coming eventually.
Bought the Willet Rye and liked it so much I decided to try another brand. Got the WhistlePig the small batch 10 year Rye and it's poop, wasted $100.00.
I think you guys called it perfectly. I use to really like W.P. 10 year rye and the 12 year sherry finish. However over the past few years the went very gimmicky with their Road stock, Farm House, F1, and other "limited releases" that are just bland instead of putting together really good finished, or well blended, or double barreled whiskies. And there no way the Boss Hogs should be retailing at $600 when things like Heaven Hill 17 or Russell 15 are half of that.
I’ve always had the inclination that Whistlepig is exactly how you all described it. I’m not going to spend my hard earned money, although I’d try it I guess if someone offered me a try.
I had some of there 10 year and a few others back when it was a farm to glass company from Vermont . Back then it was affordable and very good but the Owner was accused of mishandling or something along that line and was forced out by investors and the company hasn’t been the same since
I’ve tried the 18, similar to saz 18. I describe it as muted flavors. But the boss hog 9 was one of the best finished whiskies I have had. 10 was no where close to 9. Unless you have unlimited money, probably not worth the price. But not knowing also has a price.
I purchased the piggybank rye last year because it’s a beautiful bar top piece. I’ve also had the 12 year rye a handful of times and was always impressed. Extremely bold flavor for a low proof. You guys reviewed the wrong bottle to judge whistlepig on

I know Whistlepig has some diehard fans who love it. I've had a lot of the age stated and I really only keep a bottle of the 15 year as an occasional sipper, and the Piggyback rye/bourbon variants for mixers. I do have a few of the Boss Hogs, but they are in my opinion only good for a few sips. They aren't bad, but you don't want much of them in a sitting.
There are 27 different offerings in PA. I have had the 6yr , 10yr and farmstead versions.. To my pallet, there are better bottles out there for less money. Maybe a bottle over 100 is better. But reluctant to spend that based on what I've tried.
I’m a big fan of the 10 yr small batch rye I always keep a bottle on hand because it’s a staple for me, haven’t had too many other releases from them tho.
I have the 15,12,10, and 6 year Ryes (bought as a bundle for a great deal). I like them, but nothing special. Their rye is Canadian rye and I find it very buttery. I also have their 6 year bourbon which I am really enjoying currently, and it’s only like 45 bucks, so it’s totally fine. I will never pay the crazy prices for their super expensive stuff.
Big WhistlePig fan here. I’ve had everything from the Boss Hog to the basic Farm Stock Rye. Love them all. I like their Ryes more than so than their Bourbon. Usually stick with the Farm stock Rye or 10 year Rye for my basic smoked old fashioned.
Ive had store picks of the 10 year rye that are fantastic but than standard 10 year rye bottles that aren't very good. Its really hit or miss with Whistlepig which is tough because they aren't typically cheap
From VT and have had some WP before. For the price there are many better options out there. Tastes like an ok offering but to me falls short and prefer Michtier's over WP.
I think you guys hit the nail on the head. I remember that Whistlepig was the hot thing a few years ago. I knew they were all MTG products at the time, even though they said they were from Vermont. That wasn't impressive considering the price. I had an opportunity to try some Boss Hog a few years ago at a bar. It was ok, but nothing special, and definitely not worth the price that the bottle sold for at retail. It seems based on this review, you guys feel the same. Just a bunch of overpriced hype. I'm really surprised it's still around.
I was gifted the 6 year Piggyback Rye, at the time it was $46 If I remember. It was good, solid enough, but really didnt knock my socks off, I still have half of it left. Funny enough I just finished my Bulleit 12 Year that I picked up for $58.......to me a, I'd spend the extra $12 for an extra 6 years. I''ve only had the Boss Hogg once or twice........my only memory was that it drank HOT and I thought to myself that I must be missing something since it was nowhere near worth the $600 that my buddy paid for it. Very much agree on the 88 proof.....sourced, and then proofed down...has to be a money play? Cheers! I'll put this at the bottom of my "have to have" list!
I have a bottle of WP that was a gift from a friend in the liquor business. It is batch 001 and he said don't open it because it will be valuable some day.
I’ve yet to buy a Whistlepig product simply because of price. I just picked up a Copper&Cask small batch, 8yr. 116 proof special release from Spec’s, and it’s excellent. $46. At the moment, it’s probably my favorite for the price. Russell’s 10 is also so very solid for the price, maybe the best value in bourbon to me. Baker’s 7, Larceny Small Batch, Milam & Greene Very Small Batch….man, there’s just so many good ones for cheaper. I’ll let my friends buy Whistlepig and just drink theirs. Lol.
I happened to be in Total Wine the other day and spoke with one of the guys who works in the Bourbon and Whiskey section. He had a lot of good things to say about a WP collab with Denver Beer Co. 6 year Rye in Graham Cracker Porter Barrels. It was only $38 but I decided to pass on it since I'm still getting into ryes and failed to have been impressed by either bourbon or beer that has been finished in casks from the other spirit.
As a rule, I stay clear of any NDPs, non distiller producers, unless a bottle has a trusted review that is excellent. This rule has treated me very well over the years. I figured if the producer isn’t distilling the product, it’s more expensive than comparable distiller producer’s product. Have never seen a stellar review of Whistle Pig.
What are your thoughts and experiences with WhistlePig? Are there any other bottles you recommend we try to change our minds? Drop your suggestions below!
Hard for me to say as the only one ive had so far is the Farmstock Rye. This one for me has a confusing pallette but is still a decent pour.

I have a 10 year Whistlepig Rye and it's terrible to me.. but I do like the 6 year Piggyback Rye.. both are 100 proof I believe
Kurt - I’m with you, historically, I’m not a major Whistle Pig guy either. Cheers fellas!!!
Whistlepig 10yr small batch rye and the 12yr old world rye are fantastic. They are on my favorites list. There may still be a 375ml 3-pac gift set available on line for $120.
I like the 10 year and have bought several. The 6 year is ok
I have the opposite opinion on the 10 and 12
Only a couple years in discovering what's out there.
Looking forward to this one. I avoid Whistlepig like the plague even though I have not tasted it. Not sure why.
I’ve had a few WhistlePigs, the best was a cask strength rye store pick a few years ago (so Canadian juice). Personally I think they would taste better if they didn’t proof them down so much. The Boss Hog IV was pretty nice though.
Dickel products are not my jam. Always love the honesty here.
I live here in Vermont … let me know when you come on out … I’ll be a tour guide for ya
Had doubts about WP and their over pricing…. Now im satisfied! No more curiosity.
They are known for rye whiskeys not bourbon however.
I really like my bottle of 10 year rye Whistlepig. Never tried their other get bottles.
I was able to acquire a few bottles of Whistle Pig about 4 years ago. There are still 2 sitting in my inventory. Personally, I am not a big fan although I'm sure there are folks who love this. It's just no my bag.
You’re over due for a New England trip!
WP 15 used to be my favorite when the price was around $250, now it’s well over $300 and I just tried the Michter’s 10 year Rye and it is the best Rye I have experienced. I won’t be paying for the WP any more because there are so many good rye’s at lower price points
10 year is my go to. Got t it at $77 and is the incredible.
Love the 6 year 100 proof burbon..bought 2 bottles for 35 dollars on sale...great burbon at that price.
I’ve tried the $70 WP. I really liked it. Just a little pricey.
I had the whistle pig 10 year rye about 10 years ago. However, I prefer George Dickel rye. I think they were both sourced.
I do like the 6 year Piggyback Rye, and the last time I checked, it's only about $55-60 in Indiana.
You guys really should do some blind taste tests of budget vs higher-end whiskeys. It would be very educational.
I’ve always had the inclination that Whistlepig is exactly how you all described it. I’m not going to spend my hard earned money, although I’d try it I guess if someone offered me a try.
I had some of there 10 year and a few others back when it was a farm to glass company from Vermont . Back then it was affordable and very good but the Owner was accused of mishandling or something along that line and was forced out by investors and the company hasn’t been the same since
Far too many other bottles that I am interested in to take a gamble on Whistle Pig. I do hope to get to try it some day, maybe at a bar.
I’ve tried the 18, similar to saz 18. I describe it as muted flavors.
But the boss hog 9 was one of the best finished whiskies I have had. 10 was no where close to 9.
Unless you have unlimited money, probably not worth the price. But not knowing also has a price.
You should have tried the 10year Rye. I don’t get any minerality from it
I purchased the piggybank rye last year because it’s a beautiful bar top piece. I’ve also had the 12 year rye a handful of times and was always impressed. Extremely bold flavor for a low proof. You guys reviewed the wrong bottle to judge whistlepig on
haven't had any WP, interesting review!

Would like to see Whistle Pig rye whiskey tasting, which is their bread and butter.
I get that off putting mineral flavor from Yellowstone, I'd be curious if thats the source.
It’s from Vermont, and it’s amazing!
10 year Rye is so smooth! Damn so good! Worth it!
There are 27 different offerings in PA. I have had the 6yr , 10yr and farmstead versions.. To my pallet, there are better bottles out there for less money. Maybe a bottle over 100 is better. But reluctant to spend that based on what I've tried.
I had the 12yr old world rye in like 2019 when I found it on sale for $90. Was reasonable for that. Not paying $120+ though.
All overpriced. I don't even look at it.
I really liked this bottle.
Lol.
"Why would you proof down a 10-year Bourbon to 88 proof?". $$$$$$$.
simple: more juice to sell
I happened to be in Total Wine the other day and spoke with one of the guys who works in the Bourbon and Whiskey section. He had a lot of good things to say about a WP collab with Denver Beer Co. 6 year Rye in Graham Cracker Porter Barrels. It was only $38 but I decided to pass on it since I'm still getting into ryes and failed to have been impressed by either bourbon or beer that has been finished in casks from the other spirit.
Piggyback bottled in bond was my only experience with them, and it's pretty good
As a rule, I stay clear of any NDPs, non distiller producers, unless a bottle has a trusted review that is excellent. This rule has treated me very well over the years. I figured if the producer isn’t distilling the product, it’s more expensive than comparable distiller producer’s product. Have never seen a stellar review of Whistle Pig.
