  • This is the Finale of my Cozy Swatching Series. In this series I swatch products from my Big Art Supply Haul. This time it's watercolors in tubes by Schmincke, their so called "Super Granulation" Series, as well as various paints by Daniel Smith. Most of the Daniel Smith colours are granulating as well however I also picked a lot of muted and moody colours since I already own a lot of vibrant colours as well as basic colours by other brands and I think Daniel Smith does a really good job with curating very unique shades. I find swatching to be super relaxing and I take my time here to demonstrate how the colours shift and change as they dry. I also got a few colours that I am not very fond of and rant some. At the end of the day it all comes down to personal preference, so bear with me.

    Okay BEST SWATCHING VIDEO EVER!!! I had to stop a quarter of the way thru the video and comment how I love your swatching style!!. I love that you are swatching in real-time! I love that you are showing the tube, saying the paint name and then adding the pigment info on the screen- all while talking about how you feel about each swatch!!! I wish every art youtuber swatched like this!!! To me whats the point of swatching if we dont know what color is being swatched- i see so many people swatch sped up and without names written down first; so we dont know what colors are being swatched and the video is too fast to see how the paint looks being painted out...etc...AGAIN THIS IS THE BEST SWATCHING VIDEO EVER!! please never change!!! Lol. Anyway thanks for sharing and much love! 💚

      lol so its funny because Schminckes Volcano set: especially the volcano yellow and volcano red are my FAVORITES!! I bought big tubes of them because I love them so much- to find a single pigment granulating yellow and a single pigment granulating red is super rare...and i think most artists who are also pigment nerds love the idea of having a single pigment granulating red and yellow. If youre interested in learning more about why people love these colors Kimberly Crick on TH-cam makes a fantastic video about Volcano red and yellow---I really recommend you check it out😋 Ps. The 2 colors of the Volcano set you do like: Volcano Violet and Volcano Brown are mixes of the Volcano Red you dont like..So thats why they are really popular- they make amazing mixes

      OMG, I just couldn't believe the praise so I had to reread this! It's incredible you enjoyed this swatching video so much, I felt so bad when I uploaded it because my good camera (the side camera) stopped recording and I only noticed too late and I personally am not too keen of the top down footage. Also I made a mistake in the video, Quin. Coral is lightfast, I feel stupid I did assume that the Daniel Smith rating system is the same as with other brands. I am glad you enjoyed it and I will make sure to make future swatching videos in the same style!

      @@nadeaner.cowley513 I got the Volcano set for the exact same reasons you mentioned but again, on it's own I just don't find them appealing. But now after I have received so many comments I will not give up on them and will experiment with mixes to see what you and Kimberly talk about (btw. I follow her and she is a FANTASTIC artist and creator! She made me become more cautious of pigments and I am now willing to learn more about them!)

    I agree that the Volcano Yellow is difficult right outta the tube. But well mixed before using it has a much better result. And I am quite fond of the red because it is a muted, earthy red. In the Urban set the yellow is combined with pink and is a lovely, subtle combo. I really liked watching you swatching.

    Same feelings here about the Volcano set. I am still happy having the option of a granulating red and yellow. That Heinz' Ketchup orange is redundant IMO. Though I like the violet and the brown in this set, I was quite upset about the binder issues you get with the red and the yellow. That's absolutely unusual for Schmincke Horadam. Btw my absolutely favourites are Tundra Violet, Forest Blue and Haze Blue is growing on me because you get so many different results (I like unpredictable colors 😁)

    • @MoniDmajor
      @MoniDmajor  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I feel you! I agree the Heinz Orange is redundant since you can mix it with yellow and red. I was not very fond of the colours when I decided to order it but I did anyway just to have granulating mixing options, just like you said. Such a bummer I did not know earlier that they behave better in pans. I never expected this of Horadam. Btw, I just ordered the tundra violet, I looked it up and I could not resist :)

      @@MoniDmajor I put your Violet in the cart as well 😁. I have the Desert Green in a pan and this is absolutely perfect Schmincke quality so if I ever buy the Volcano red and yellow again (to have a granulating mixing option) I will definitely buy the pan. For DS paint (which I dearly love!) I found very good alternatives in the Roman Szmal paints (which for EU/Germany are available at Peter's Art in Berlin. Very good professional art store and online shop).

    So glad the Covid didn’t keep you bugged down! My family goes through a lot of extreme daily sanitizations since me and my mother have weak immune systems. I have a good handful of Daniel Smiths, plus some White Nights and the Vintage Pastel set of the watercolor confections (those have rebranded though I think they’re now called Art Philosophy but I’m not sure I purchased mine before the rebrand). I just love watercolors, they’re my babies, but my comfort color is White Nights coral, it brings me a sense of childish comfort

I just got a bunch of White Nights after you told me about the Pastel Colour Confections - I decided against them because I saw that White Nights has a bunch of beautiful pastel colours and I heard only good things about White Nights! Needless to say, I also ordered their Coral now :D Yes, Gouache and Watercolours just spark so much joy ❤️

      @@MoniDmajor We take Microban and spray down the entire house front to back twice a day, once in the morning and once after everyone’s come home for the night, and so far we’ve been blessed and lucky to avoid getting Covid-sick. As for the paints, I truly hope you enjoy them! They’re such a nice watercolor to use, White Nights have that nice creamy consistency, and it they’re so pigmented it barely takes a dip in the pan to get a good bit of paint. I’m serious, with me all it takes is two strokes over the pan with a water brush and I usually end up with more than enough paint with just two good brushstrokes (though my sketching is slightly smaller than yours so you may need like 3-4 or so strokes before you get a good puddle of paint) best of wishes and truly I hope your Covid recovery goes as smoothly as possible!

    For volcano yellow: I wouldn't use this pure...but you can mix it with other colors and get a granulating effect...f.e. the DS sap green...becomes a little more yellow clearly...but also gets a granulating touch. The orange I didn't try yet but maybe the color gets a little less "heinzly" when mixed with other colors. Maybe you could make a video for us...trying different mixes?!

    Hey 👋. This was super relaxing to watch. I just purchased most of these during Jackson's and Jerry's Artarama watercolor sales, but am just getting around to swatching them myself - they just arrived. I actually liked the volcano colors after they dried except for the yellow. Have you tried the Belgian Isaro paints? They are beautiful and I am waiting until Jackson's restock on 4/20 to get my hand on Nordman green and Icy Blue. Just very pretty watercolors made by a one person business in Belgium. Her grandfather or great great grandfather was a famous painter who has paintings in museums and her Dad made the machinery to make the paint ie mass produce it in small supply. She considers herself a "color" lady or expert. Interesting writeup on their website. Glad you survived Covid. We are supposed to get next variant in next few weeks that Britain experienced here in the US. Hope I avoid it.

      Jessica, I hope you stay healthy and well, this is so frustrating we still need to deal with this pandemic with all the other bad things going on in the world. So happy you could splurge some on the Jackson's sale, I tried to but yet again Jackson's would not fulfill my order due to stupid restrictions when it comes to "toxic" paints aross countries. Even though I made sure to order just non toxic paints I still got that stupid pop up. I hear good things about Jerry's and I like their TH-cam channel, it's just not cheaper for me to ship here but I am glad you have so many amazing shops to choose from in the US. Thank you for all the info about Isaro, I heard about them on Kimberly's channel and I hope I will find ways to get my hands on them, because again Jackson's just does not like me (or maybe it's my countries fault they restrict it), and Jackson's never got back to my customer support emails. :(

    I bought a half pan of Vulcano red because I've heard about binder issue in tubes, it's not my fav red but it's amazing in mixes! granulation/color separation is sooo in your face, really bold :) I got also a dot card with supergranulating colors and this Vulcano yellow colors (mixes from vulcano and shire set) are a big no no for me. Hard to rewet, it's like they are lacking pigmentation but they could be useful if someone is into light and subtle yellowy colors (I'm not😅). Your selection of colors from DS is amazing, very moody colors. Have you tried Misty morning from Roman Szmal? Very pretty greyish blue with hints of pink and turquoise. I could also recommend Przybysz Grey.

The olcano Violet and Brown look so good after all and they have the same pigment. I own so many vibrant colours already and that's why I chose so many moody colours this time :) Misty Morning I just ordered btw, I heard of it and in fact I even followed a video by Kimberly Cricket, she created a dupe by mixing Cobalt turqoise and Quin. Coral and I must say it looks stunning! Still, I wanted to try the original by Roman Szmal and since I was curious about RS paints anyway I ordered a bunch (also Przybysz Grey) :) There might be another Swatching Video around the corner!

    If I could get my money back, I would return all of my Schmincke granulating watercolors. For me, I think the colors are dull, dark and pretty much ugly. I think that I will try mixing them with white and maybe get some interesting pastels. I wish I had seen this video before I bought them. I like Masha's Watercolors on Etsy. They granulate beautifully and all of her colors are vibrant. My favorite mass manufactured paints are Daniel Smith and QOR.

    The Volcano Red and Volcano Yellow are both very difficult to rewet and are very low tinting. You did not get a bad batch, the paints are actually that difficult t to rewet. Spray them and wait for 5-10 mins before using them. Alternatively, use a stiff bristles brush to take paints out of the pans.

    Love love love Luna Blue . Did you like Moon glow more than Deep Sea Violet or Haze Pink? I have Moon glow but actually thought that Sea Violet and Pink Haze might be better. The 3 of them looked really similar on the video. Are they?

    • @MoniDmajor
      @MoniDmajor  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s weird because they are not at all really similar but it can depend on the device we’re watching the video on. I’ll describe the colours in a gradient from thick to light wash: Haze Pink is a Cool Grey that goes to a Light Pink, Deep Sea Violet is a Dark Purplish Ultramarine Blue that goes to a Light Peachy Yellow kinda colour. I can’t decide my favorite 😆 They are all so stunning! But I admit, I don’t reach out for Moonglow that often, but maybe it’s because I also have a bunch of Roman Szmal paints that have very similar vibes to it :)

    I had the same yucky gummy light tinting strength with yellow, orange and red in the volcano series and three in the shire set too.
    I messaged the seller. She divided tubes and made 1/4 pans. I think we all got a bad batch. It has turned me off, as I had high hopes. Some channels that came out earlier with volcano swatches, were different.
    Rutile yellow by Schmincke may be the pastel vanilla yellow you are looking for.

      I totally get your frustration, some people here are aware of the issues but my understanding is they still like these colors because they make for amazing mixes that add granulation. Meanwhile I experimented with mixes with said colours and I am still underwhelmed. Preferences can vary so much among artists, it’s crazy 😜 Thanks for the Rutile Yellow suggestion, so many mentioned this colour and I think I will give it a try!

    • @michemman

      @@MoniDmajor Some youtuber watercolour artists have had issues with Super granulating, Volcano and Shire from both pans and tubes. Now some artists are having issues with standard artist Horadam weakness in cadmium red, lemon yellow, and Ultramarine Finest in pans.
      Others seem to have rich colours. We all need to speak up.
      I bet they are aware of this problem, and that their quality control didn't pick it up.
      Is it a second place to manufacture or is it just the wrong ratios of gum arabic?
      I emailed Schmincke today, so I will let you know how I get on.
      It is disappointing and yes, frustrating.

      Hey Shadow, so great hearing from you! Don’t worry about the oxgall thing, we can change our opinion anytime without having to justify it infront of anyone. It’s harder sometimes doing this on social media since people are quick to jump and call you out on it but at the end of the day we need to do what we think is right, as long as we have peace with it. I personally always let people buy and use whatever they want, what others do does not affect my own life. Sending you hugs and have a great day, Shadow! 🌼

    All the colors you hate have a really low tinting strength. The yellow is very, very pale. The red is a granulating form of cadmium. Both terre verte behave like that in every brand, again, low tinting strength. You said you're not a pigment person, but if you looked into the pigments, you'd realize they are behaving exactly how they're supposed to. Not all pigments behave the same and that's the necessity of at least understanding a little about pigments. This helps in not wasting your money on something you won't like. They're not garbage, they are just pigments which don't vibe with your likes/style.

I can make granulating watercolors from using PBk11 (Daniel Smith Lunar Black) or PB29 (ultramarine). I already have ultramarine so I need to purchase PBk11.
