  • A couple of people requested that I video the next time I do a rock painting using my granulating watercolours. I regard this as pure play, rather than creating artwork as such - it's relaxing, fun and unpredictable!
You can see me swatch out most of my granulating watercolours, plus see some of my other granulating watercolour paintings, here:

I love this idea - I always feel like a vandal painting actual pebbles, but this way ‘no pebbles were harmed’! Awww, buy Freddy! He’s adorable!

I just started with watercolor, and after a bunch of practicing technique I painted one of these rock pics and it turned out so good! It may be the best thing I’ve ever painted so far! Thank you for the inspiration!

It's so beautiful to let the water color do it's thing. And then add those pretty doodles. It is a work of arte in my opinion. This inspires me because I'm in the process of getting a granulating palette togeather. Thank you for this nice video. ☺☺💖💖 Karen from Canada

Granulating paints are some of my faves. The pigment settling into the nooks and crannies of the paper is just so gorgeous. Thanks for sharing another lovely video. :)

Thank you! Yes, they're gorgeous paints - I can recommend the Roman Szmal paints which granulate though - they are very reasonably priced and still lovely quality.

I was thinking of doing a video on this subject, but as briefly as possible, I'd suggest buying some professional watercolour paints such as Daniel Smith's, Winsor & Newton Professional, Schmincke Horadam, or some slightly cheaper but still good ones are Roman Szmal's. At a minimum, I'd suggest getting 2 reds (eg. Quinacridone Rose - a cool red, and Pyrrol Scarlet - a warm red), 2 yellows (eg. Lemon Yellow - a cool yellow, and whatever yellow that's more orangey looking that you like - ie. a warm yellow. Some people like New Gamboge, Hansa Yellow Medium. I like Quinacridone Gold Deep) and 2 blues (eg. French Ultramarine - a warm blue, and a cooler, more turquoise blue, like Phthalo Blue Green Shade, though I personally like Phalo.Turquoise). If you get transparent or semi- transparent paints, they generally mix more cleanly. With these 6 colours you can then mix most other colours.
For brushes, it depends what you want to paint, and how much detail you want to achieve. I'd say that a size 8 or 10 Princeton Neptune is a beautiful brush. It's soft, holds lots of water and for up to A4 size pictures it's just about big enough to do washes, and you can still do a fair bit of detail with it, but you will likely also want a firmer and smaller brush, such as a 4 or 6 Princeton Aqua Elite.
Escoda Ultimos or Silver Black Velvets are good substitutes for the Neptunes.
Betty Hayways, Escoda Perlas, any sable brushes are good firmer brushes.
I'll put links on to my personal choice of a limited palette (slightly different from the standard choice of 2 of each of the Primaries) and to one of the difference between brushes.

You're welcome! I know that Daniel Smith and W&N were at the art shops I visited in Brittany last summer, but Sennelier are a very good brand too. Some of their tubes can be quite runny, but their half pans are very good if you want to travel with paints.

@@helencryer I will have a look on line because where I live is quite rural and the nearest art shop is about an hour away. Otherwise do you know of any slightly cheaper starter boxed pallets that I could try first?

    • @helencryer

Yes, I'm not really sure - pigment particle sizes, pigment weight, using different amounts of water, chemical formula of pigments, binders used in different paints?? Different combinations of these things would be my guess.
