      David for the bicopter have you thought about going larger and being able to run a standard servo either with a gear driven system possible even making the booms the pivot point. Also what about a v tail rudder system like that of the osprey.

    • @devadershan
      @devadershan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      hi david your design is beautiful but i think its your frame that is making it hard to go backward. i think when you go back a lot of drag is being created at the nose and since the nose is tilted down when going backward it is acting like the control surface of airplane and is pushing the nose up and the fc is trying to auto level it and i think that is the issue that the bi copter is jittering while you back.

      Kevin,,,,,I totally agree with you. And I agree with Drew in that the quad movement has gotten to serious and has lost the good hearted fun factor. For those that don't remember the beginning days of Flite Test, especially when David would join in,,,,,take a glance back at some of the old videos. It was all great fun and innovative at the same time. And much of the information is still applicable today. Again,,,,,great video and Chad,,,,,glad you jumped in to add a bit of old time mix. It was also heartwarming to see a video shot at the origin of Flite Fest,,,,,Chad's back yard,,,,play set and all!!!!

    When flying backwards, the "tail feathers" are providing a positive feedback (which amplifies any deviation from the desired angle) thus forcing the controller to apply significant corrective input. Because the amplitude and phase of that effect is different to the static/forward flight dynamics, the PIDs in the controller become all wrong and you get that oscillation.

    • @Stambo59
      @Stambo59 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Can you repeat that in english please. :P

    • @mistercohaagen
      @mistercohaagen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      The tail feathers act like a sail in reverse, instead of the fins of a rocket (when correctly oriented)... they proportionally grab more air as they become more misaligned with the direction of (backwards) travel, which causes a progressively stronger reaction from the PID loop that is trying to center the "stick" (PID setpoint). Thought experiment; why isn't the rudder on the front rather than the rear of a boat? What would that feel like to steer if you had an non-steerable motor on the rear of the boat providing fixed thrust. Stick your hand out the window on the highway jutting forward versus backwards... feel the difference and you should instantly develop the necessary intuition if you haven't already.

    Chad was right...and it has been the hobbyists who have been the Innovators in this hobby and it is THAT , the FAA- commercial Drone Industry and sadly even the AMA that is trying to stick a fork in and end it.............one creates an idea and those who join it help perfect it...take that away and this Hobby dies and tech dies as it was spoken....they go to this point and then they stop.....and The Swede-Windestal, has been doing some great innovating for awhile as has Flight test ( what Chad started ) and even Rotor Riot and many many others......THAT is what has made this HOBBY what it is.....and has gotten many more in it and is spreading ...we can not allow that to end......WRITE Your Congress person and make sure they keep all Hobbyists rights to do just that ..................GREAT Video......what Dreams are made of.

      No. This hobby was around a long time before those guys were even born. One might even say utube vids like rotor riot is famous for, ruined the hobby by attracting negative attention and encouraging idiots to what was never considered to be a dangerous hobby by any authority.

    • @FlyingBuzzard
      @FlyingBuzzard 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I built model aircraft as a kid ( I been around a long time ) saved money hunting and returning bottles, in those days money was hard to come by, much less be able to afford the materials to build a flying aircraft, it was years in the making and .. long before the internet , No clubs . no body i knew who ever did such a thing ...needless to say I had little success in flying, and I still built after watching balsa wood shatter, was frustrating. needless to say life got in the way and i moved on, but that DREAM remained....fast forward a vast many years, now an old man , with New tech, a wealth of info By Great Friendly Hobbyists, I jumped back in after a few years of researching, just reading the articles of those whining about Lipo batteries almost kept me away.....did more research and learned Lipo's are dangerous to those who refuse to learn CHANGE....Needless to say i am flying and have been awhile and now getting into FPV and flying quads and the only ones ruining the Hobby are the morons who think hiding behind locked gates flying and demanding everyone kiss the AMA and pay them dues to have a cook out or fund a group of people in Muncie who are trying to steal the hobby away from REAL Hobbyists ...and ZERO to do with Utube vids or RR, or anyone else ( other than a handful of people who fly near manned aircraft, which only seems to occur when the AMA and FAA and DoD and ALPA starts screaming to end the Hobbyists freedoms and end 336 ) and to do with whiners who would rather sell their souls to Commercial drone Industr, the FAA and the AMA who is also backing them to force membership and AMA sanction field flying only. R U one of those people J-BOY?

    The oscillations occur when the control surfaces are facing forward in reverse flight. it's like putting the rudder in front of a ship, and the drag induced causes the sensors to try to compensate by adjusting the thrust vectors. Another analogy is like trying to plow a straight line by driving the tractor backwards. The resistance is sufficient to induce larger deviations from the normal and the adjustments must be even larger to compensate.

      Its a pretty simple omni antenna on a 3ft standoff, it prob would have done more damage to the quad than to the antenna. These Omni's are actually the cheapest antennas that you would find on a tower because they have no electronics on them.

    Really appreciate this one. As a new quad pilot (71 yo noob) I’ve been looking for a tricopter and here one is. I think my brain will gravitate toward easy cruising rather than acro but still enthused about it all.

    So cool to see David continuing to innovate and continue the tricopter design. After you/he left the Flite Test team, I totally forgot about tricopters. Going to have look him up on his RC Explorer. Thanks for posting. Been a long time since I have seen Chad in a video.

    And yet here we are 5 years later and we still dont have much tri-bi copter innovation (in terms of, them becoming well tuned to compare with quads).
    To think we've reached the apex of drone flight in 2024 is incredible hubris.

    Wow blast from the past, I just realized that one scene from 2011 with the yellow parachute thingy on the islands... That was one of my main inspirations like "I wanna do that too!" and one of the things I showed around back then to show people what I'm even talking about.
    Those were the days man, getting nostalgic here^^
