    C40 Yamaha..had mine for 10-12 yrs. It's what I find myself "picking up" the most. It is a total steal. So sweet and simple. You can not go wrong with this baby. I paid around 100 USD...incredible to find such quality for the dough. This is a beginners guitar but you will probably not "outgrow" it, ever.

      I think a lot of us cut our teeth on a C40 or one of its antecedants. I did, but wish I'd known then what I do now. Althought still referred to as the C40, it's been superseded by the C40//02. Because of its wide neck and action, if well informed there are preferred equally affordable instruments to learn guitar with these days outside the nylon stringed Classical genre IMO. But the venerable 'C40' is a decent choice for treading the Classical path. I recently bought one for my studio to expand my options and skills.

    I was in a guitar store just yesterday and asked where Yamaha guitars are made. I was told that Yamaha guitars are made in Indonesia now. Before I think they were made in Japan. They are great-sounding guitars -- at least when I used to play one in the 80s.

    • @theblytonian3906
      @theblytonian3906 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Electric or acoustic, all except top tier of some segments are now made in Yamaha's factory in Indonesia. The Yamaha units in this video are Indonesian origin. Many decades ago when the JPY was much softer, even the antecedent of the C40//02 which I own (I owned its venerable predecessor in 1973) was made in Japan. The quality is still pretty good. Not as good as Made in Japan then or now, but outstanding for what you pay. Most problems you'll find with Yamaha from Indonesia are minor finish related which of course crosses over into QC. Whether that's related to policy a consequence of worldwide demand which always outstrips Yamaha's ability to supply or cultural attitude is anyone's guess.

    I've been a classical player for many years and I've also taught classical for quite a few. To me, the Cordoba is ok, but I think Yamaha makes a better instrument, regardless of price point. It amazes me the level of sound quality a laminated top Yamaha produces. But when you you move up to the solid top models, I think this is where the Yamaha begins to distance itself from the Cordoba. I own a CG-170CA that I picked up used, probably sold new for around $500-600. This is a simply wonderful sounding instrument with a very Spanish sound quality.

      Do you have any suggestions for classical guitar pieces? I've been playing for a year and I would really like to play more classical pieces.

    • @cswann8
      @cswann8 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree...the first classical I had an say about was a Yamaha. Obviously anything at $300 and under is going to have laminated woods, so the volume suffers (in a college dorm that's not a bad thing), but Yamaha guitars play very well and do have a nice balance sound.

    • @mwmcbroom
      @mwmcbroom 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@TaartjeMetSlagroom without knowing your skill level, as well as your preferences, it's hard to make a recommendation. There is one collection that works across all skill levels that I can recommend: Carcassi's 25 studies. They range from easy to difficult, more or less in numerical order. So, expect number 12 to be more difficult than number 3, for example. I prefer the Carcassi studies over those by Carulli - a bit more challenging and a lot more interesting sounding - and to those by Sor. The Sor studies are much better known, but I don't care for them. They don't have the range of difficulty found in the Carcassi studies and I just find most of them to be just plain boring sounding. Anyway, hope this helps some and good luck with your future adventures on the classical guitar.

    I got a Washburn classical guitar in 2004 from online musicians friend which was a popular site back in the day. Cost only $130 on some kind of sale. I didn’t touch it for ten years when I was depressed then opened it, tuned or replaced the strings, and it sounds even better. (Where I live it’s relatively humid and it was in a case all the time)

It was very well articulated. It was great at explaining the different beginner guitars at different levels. Thank you, but a correction and an observation.
    First, your strong opinion that the Cordoba may be superior in that it has a truss or tension rod and that the Yamaha does not. The implication is that in time the Yamaha may bow. FALSE. The Yamaha's indeed have a hidden tension rod that will remain stable.
    Now as to adjustment: the Cordoba's truss rod is adjustable for string height - still the Yamaha is perfectly and easily adjustable by filing, easy and commonly done by the average buyer. It is well to note that there are also good reasons to NOT lower the string height.
    The observation: the Protege is known for two fairly serious defects - one infrequent, and the other on almost every one. Bridge failures do happen on the Protege (it pops off!). Rarely if at all on Yamahas. But much worse. The fret ends on nearly every Protege are so sharp that it is easy to cut your fingers when running your hand up and down the neck! This requires an immediate repair and is quite literally dangerous.
    In sum, Cordoba lacks the quality control, consistency and dependability of Yamaha. All Yamaha guitars are well made and perform well above their price points. This is exactly why I chose a entry level Yamaha (the CG-122MC, which matches up well with the Cordoba C5, but for a notably lower cost). Why you left out the 122MC is a mystery.

    Thank you very much for the short comparison video. I've played on several beginner Yamaha guitars and they have always been terrific value for money. It would be most appreciated if you could perhaps compare them to a few more brands. In particular the very attractive 'Artist' range of classical guitars which come with fishman nylon pickup and EQ built in. (An example would be the Artist CS180CEQ which features a solid spruce top(kind of more a Flamenco guitar material but never the less there labelling it as a classical), and is within the price range you have put forward in this video.) There a numerous other brands and it would be great to have a nice comparison recording like the one you presented here so you can hear the differences between the models. Thank you for your work on this video.

    A couple of months ago I was in the market for a guitar. I have a music store a short distance from home. I have NO real knowledge about what makes a good guitar. I only knew I wanted nylon strings.
    The store had a variety of steel string acoustic guitars but only 2 or 3 different nylon string classical guitars. I was not planning on learning to play classical music. I wanted to just do accompaniment for folk music.
    I had narrowed it down to two guitars, one of which was the Yamaha CG122MCH. I don't remember what the other one was. It was yellow in color and heavier than the Yamaha. I got the Yamaha as the weight was less, it sounded really nice to me, and I liked the color/finish better.
    From this video, it seems I didn't totally waste my money. Whew! I'm retired so have plenty of time to practice. So far, I've really been enjoying my practice. It was a good decision on my part and I don't always make good decisions. 😅

  • @udmbfckx2916

    The Yamaha CG122MCH or MSH has a low action, meaning that the string is closer so less pressure and less painful finger issues for the beginner (nylon is better than steel for the beginner) meaning more playing time sooner and less running away from it. I think that unless you are a pro, it will be really hard to outgrow it. Worth the extra $100 over the "el cheapo" store-brand guitars.

    The Thomann Classic S 4/4 ("S" = all solid wood, and "4/4" denoting full size) should be on the list. It is built in Europe, has solid spruce top with solid maple back/sides and uses no tropical hardwoods (eg; poses no problems with import/export). It is made by Hora SA in Romania. The cost? Currently about 120USD / EUR108 + shipping. It's a great option for student-grade guitar. And, unlike a guitar built with laminates ('plywood'), it will improve it's sound over time -- a guitar built with laminates never does. If you're handy with setup, upgrades/enhancements, you can make it sound like a much, much more expensive guitar something approaching concert-quality sound/tone.

  •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My first guitar was a Fender CG-11E which I got on a local store in the US (Im from Argentina). This was around 25 years ago, I still play it every day, I haven't done a single thing other than changing strings, changing the tunners (after a lot of use) and adjusting the truss-rod after lowering the action a little bit (sanding the bridge).
    Really love this guitar.
    I believe for anyone starting, specially if not sure about keep playing later on, something priced around what the C40 cost, is a fantastic entry point.
    And don't be afraid to try and buy a used guitar, as long as its in good shape of course.

      For some reason, the guitars from VGS/Hora/Thomann are barely even known here in the US. Some of those are good, basic no-frills guitars which (among those that actually see/play/buy them) have loyal and happy customers.
      I bought the Thomann S and love it. Hora makes several all solid guitars and offer them for what most Chinese student type guitars sell for. The VGS Gold (all solid spruce top, maple back/sides) gets great reviews and Thomann sells a lot of them. Be ready to take it to a shop/luthier for proper setup and have the frets checked too.
      All the models included in this review use laminates for back and sides! (Booooo).

    Sorry, but a truss rod in a classical guitar is NOT really for adjusting action/string height, as you claim. You did correctly say it adjusts the relief, but that is not really affecting the action (string height at the 12th fret).
    Truss rods tend to be on the lower beginner or entry point guitars, because they usually don't have a "spanish heel" and therefore the neck can bend out of alignment more easily. I have two classical guitars... a cheaper Kato that has a truss rod. And a higher quality Manuel Rodriguez (made in Madrid) which does not have, nor need, a truss rod.
    I do agree that on a cheaper model, a truss rod is a good idea. It give you the ability to fix defect in neck relief. I have had to do that with my Kato. But with a more high end guitar, the neck should be stable, and the adjustment to action is usually done by changing the height of the nut and saddle.

    • @mwmcbroom
      @mwmcbroom 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's been too many years, so I don't recall the AC-15 specifically, but it used to be the case with Aria that the higher the number, the better quality the guitar. For instance, for years, the top Aria in the AC range was the AC-60, and it was a well made, decent sounding guitar. So, following that design, I'd say the AC-15 was probably the cheapest Aria classical you could buy - or close to it.

    I love my cgs104a! I have very big hands and it works great in my case. I picked it up for $50. In mint condition. I now play it more than my fender steel string and electric guitars. I love v the warm sound it produces. I modified it to left handed by switching out the nut and flip in the saddle. Intonation is on point.

    Ii had a cordoba C5. Shortly after buying it The A string kept coming Lise. I bought it from guitar center and brought it to guitar center for repair.
    They said there were some problems with it. I think with the bridge. They said I would have to leave for repair they said it migjt be expense.
    Instead I just bought a set of nes strings and tried to move on.
    Other private techs said there were no problems. Now there seem to be problems.
    Finally here about 6 years later I have started to use a classical guitar again. I give up on that guitar. Think I just want to buy new one.
    I swear by Yamaha. That is my steel string. There is a model I would never give up.
    So should I just keep things simple and go with a Yamaha classical.
    Note: I originally bought cordoba because if fabulous sound in store.
    But I really trust Yamaha. Can you please reply?

    Look around at the local pawn shops, I bought a Yamaha classical brand new in around 2005 but it never compared to my sister's 1978 Yamaha she got at a pawn shop for $100. That being said years and a few guitars later I found a 1973 hernandis for $150 and it is increbible, just look around it'll pay off.

      I'm not surprised , a lot of newbies who don't know better buy a classical not knowing it's almost exclusively used for that genre. I knew one guy that bought a Ramirez concert model, the owner had inherited from someone, for 2k, it was easily worth 3 times that.

    Yes, Yamaha and Cordoba make good entry level classicals - but you are just advocating for the brands that your store carries. I'm a luthier that works on a lot of classical guitars and Kremona S65 and F65 is up there with Cordoba's C5 and C7. Lag OC300 and OC400 are really decent too. Alhambra makes a decent beginner model - as does Teton and La Patrie.

    I acquired a C1M 3/4 for my granddaughter - truly appalling. Sharp fret ends down the full length of both sides of the neck but, MUCH worse, the brace through which the trussrod could be accessed was split from the centre to the one end and for about 2" going the other way. Also, the neck seemed to have been set badly or had shifted when the brace shattered. It was garbage.
    On the other hand, I have the C5-CET which is superb. My only niggle there was the very high-gloss neck but that was easily remedied with 500 and 1200 grit wet/dry.

I like the CGX 102 the most for the fact that if im not mistaking it comes with built in tuner and can be pluged to an amp speiker to what i understand both of the CG's are the same exept for the electronics part. Can you help me make the best choice and tell me why its better i would really appreciate it.

    I love your advice on guitars but the one I have seems to have a interesting a life time feel to her it was made in Spain and the more I play it the better it is sounding more worked in and it would want to be considering that I sung it down from $1200 to $1000.00 it is a very much a life time guitar that is for someone who wants that sound that comes from an advanced player I just love that quality of sound that can't be matched by anything else I want to be just as good as what Andre Segovia was
