    DO NOT DO THIS TO YOUR CABLES. THEY WILL BREAK. use the classic over under technique, there is no tension on the wires in the cable and it won't get tangled.

    I've always done the under-over method that most people do when they wrap extension cables or instrument cables and the like. Just do the same with headphones/USB cables/whatever, and put them in a little pouch in your bag. Keeps the cables healthy and not broken and you don't have to worry about them getting tangled up with other crap in your bag if you have a smaller little bag/pouch to put them in. Definitely worth it.

    I just use a carrying case that came with a previous wireless earbuds to carry my earbuds, keeps it neat and uncoiled. I have a small travel case in my bag for extra tech things like batteries, screen wipes, extra earbuds, 2-1 lightning/micro-usb charging cables. When traveling I use a grid-it mat to keep it all in order of I'm carrying more.

  • @dotter8

    I use an old pill bottle. The bottle is about 1.25"X3.25". I hold the cord by the plug end and give it a couple seconds to dangle and untangle. Then I bring the elements up to the plug so the cord is folded in half. Then I fold it in half again, again, once more. Now it just fits inside the pill bottle, not too snug, not too loose. I put on the cap and my headphones are dry, secure and pocket-proof. To use them, I just pull them out and give them a little shake.

    I tried this with my Shure 215s with the iOS volume/play/mic cable. If you've got an annoyingly large mic doodad on yours, grab it by the mic, then wrap the remaining cord around your fingers, then wrap the headphones into the cord on the other end. Works like magic.

    TIP :: *USED TO THINK I WAS SMART FOR WRAPPING LIKE THIS for months with my heaphones, until about every 2-3 months of doing it multiple times a day, shorted 3 pairs.
    NOW I USE a small 2"x2" spring open flat pouch to store them (think tiny coin pouch), and wind the headphone cable in loose full circes. Has not shorted a cable in 6-7 months so far.. (There are no sharp bends) And it doesn't make the wires curly when you take it out.
    The flatness, plus the spring opening, holds the earbud part in place and it's easy to pull out untangled. No need to tie any knots or under/over. Just slip the loose coil in.

  • @colmakesvideo
    @colmakesvideo 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    the amount of tension that puts on the point where the wire meets the plug is going to make the weak rubber split and fray your wires even faster, and if you accidentally put pressure on one of the tightly folded wires you're going to fuck the whole cable up

    Best way to wrap short cables like headphones! However, he leaves too much at the end to wrap around the coil. About 3 wraps around the coil works better, that way you don't get the "springy" cable syndrome.

    How much you leave depends on the thickness of the cable. I like to use 3 wraps personally so the cable doesn't look like a phone cord at one end. How much you leave depends on how thick the overall wrap is. Leaving 8-10 inches is too much.

    A lot of people are saying that this is going to mess up your cables... I don't think it will, because if you do it properly, there are no sharp creases. In my experience, that's what kills most cables.

    • @JacobJGiffin
      @JacobJGiffin 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it's not just the sharp edges that kill the cable (at least not completely). The biggest problem with this method is that you're wrapping it against the wire's natural coil. this generates significant tension and warping over time, and can eventually fray the wire in spots. while maybe not a huge deal with cheap headphones, it definitely is with more expensive and thicker power cables, xlr cables, etc.

    • @Antenox
      @Antenox 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Brent Salamorin Your headphone cables are most likely to fail at the joints, i.e. where they join to the earbuds or where it joins to the jack. This doesn't affect your cable lifespan at all.

    • @Shadowboost
      @Shadowboost 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Antenox You are tensioning your cable every time you pull this open. RIGHT at the joint

    • @Antenox
      @Antenox 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shadowboost
      No, you're not. You're holding it slightly below the joint. That's why you leave a little bit of slack so that you don't grip it right at the joints.
      I've been using this method for years. None of my earbuds have broken because of this method. Of course, I've since started using Bluetooth earbuds and headphones, so this technique is kind of moot for me now.
      On that note:
      Use Bluetooth earbuds and headphones! Marginal sound quality loss, ENORMOUS increase in convenience!

    WOW! continental europeans (yes, excluding UK) are astonished that you HAVE TO TEACH your fellow countrymen something so trivial !!!
    it's called common sense and kids here can do it without anyone telling them...

    Instead of wasting 2 minutes untangling the wires, this takes 30seconds, it's useful, especially if you use headphones a lot.

    Signal cables such as HDMI, ethernet or coax cables shouldn't be bent like he suggests. Big loops...BIG LOOPS!

    I thought people have been doing this for years....

  • @nugenki
    @nugenki 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I only do this for cables I want to store for a long time because if you do this over again over again, the cables create a bias and the headphone wires won't fall naturally

    • @nugenki
      @nugenki 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nugenrules And another thing! It takes approximately 5 seconds to untangle my earphones, and no time to throw them in my pocket. That's way quicker than rolling them up methodically, and then unrolling them.
      The only valid point you throw out is that it is unsightly. Of course, this is still just another point of view

    Pretty much how I currently tie all of my cables, but maybe a bit better for them. Will try. Thanks. :p

    • @devpeak
      @devpeak 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Devon Peak Okay, only problem I see with this is that it's tough (or maybe impossible) to do with cables that are attached to something. So, neatly tying the cable to make it shorter and even neater, is kinda not possible with this method. Good for earbuds though.

      No flame war or anything but I've been using a very similar method for years and have had zero issues. And the Apple EarPods have consistently been the most durable headphones I've had. They even regularly go thru the wash. The only time I've ever broken them is if the fall from my pocket and are still attached to the phone and I step on them while walking.
