Lily Allen in Calais: 'I apologise on behalf of my country'- BBC News

  • The Calais ‘jungle’ camp is due for demolition. The UK Home Secretary has vowed to speed up plans to resettle hundreds of vulnerable children from the camp after talks with France. Charities have been stepping up their pressure on the UK government - they say there are a thousand children in the camp unaccompanied - and demolition will mean children go missing. The singer Lily Allen has been to meet children living in the jungle with charity Help Refugees. Our reporter Catrin Nye went with her.

  • @sirponsonbywobblebottom3051
    @sirponsonbywobblebottom3051 7 ปีที่แล้ว +65

    They are safe -- they are in France. They are not refugees anymore. They have sanctuary -- the reason to go the UK is no longer about safety, it's about economic convenience.

    • @sirponsonbywobblebottom3051
      @sirponsonbywobblebottom3051 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      That's not how being a refugee works. A refugee has no specific claim on any country. S/he has the right to safe harbour. That has been achieved by these people (after passing through other numerous countries). It's not a question of pick and choose. The reason they are choosing UK is because of benefits.

    • @henryleopard1066
      @henryleopard1066 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      You can't get any luvvie darling points if you mention Rotherham. Or Cologne. Or the 5 migrants who raped the disabled girl in Sweden.
      The BBC won't let you promote your upcoming album if you don't push their PC narrative.

    • @ChrisMcSweeney
      @ChrisMcSweeney 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because rape victims have a legal right to anonymity which seemingly all of them exercised. Neither the BBC nor Lily Allen knows who they are, so we can't go and have a heartfelt interview with them. But I'm sure the anonymous victims appreciate you using them as a political football.
      Should probably point out that the suspects in the Rotherham case had legally been citizens of the UK for decades (some since birth), and couldn't have less in common with the Calais Jungle inhabitants. Are you trying to say that anyone who comes to our shores from abroad is a child-rapist?
      British children living in poverty have access to social welfare, the public services and the job market of the world's 6th largest economy. Their lives are difficult, but there are roads out of poverty they can take. Most of the Calais migrants don't have documented citizenship of any nation and can't even get running water. They're legally locked out of most opportunities to escape poverty.

      Shhh dont mention the words' Moslem' or 'Islam'. These people dont seem to understand that its the Islamic ideology that seperates them from us. Its completely utterly irrelevant whether they were born in the UK, US or Australia or whatever. What matters is who their perfect role model is. All these pro moslems (I use the word Moslem instead of Muslim because in their language a 'Moslem' is a vile creature and they hate it if you call them that. Similar words but differant meanings ) seem to be oblivious that a Moslems ideal role model, the man they try to copy, Mohammed, was a war-monger, mass-murderer, serial killer, theif, liar, rapist and pedophile. They also seem to overlook how women are treated as per Sharia Law. I understand that their compassion gets in the way of their common sense but at some point these blind fools have to realise that its not smart to bring a fatal disease into your house and Islam is a disease. Wanna help the kids? Go to their country and help them help themselves fine, but with the attitude moslems have towards human life its a losing battle. Good luck. Best improve the lives of our own homeless and hungry first.

    • @ChrisMcSweeney
      @ChrisMcSweeney 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheCausation Who said they were Muslims? The Alexis Jay report certainly didn't, not sure if you've read it. Many of the victims in the Rotherham case reported drugs and alcohol being involved, but practising Muslims do neither.
      Regardless, there are hardly any Pakistani Muslims in the Calais jungle: mostly Iraqi Kurds, Sudanese and a few dozen other nationalities.

    Don't apologise on my behalf, thanks. I have nothing to apologise for. This country gives millions of pounds every year in foreign aid. We can't be expected to 'save' everyone. If it bothers you that much Lily then please feel free to donate as much of your wealth to this cause as possible. Or share your house with several refugee families. Yes what's going on is awful. But this country has enough of its own problems to deal with.

      Problems that THIS country have also caused to other countries! How convenient it is to overtake and colonise other countries and have war with them but now it’s suddenly inconvenient to help innocent refugees who are legally allowed to be helped! Money doesn’t do shit without practical help. You can’t be giving aid and money in a dangerous environment. God forbid your child is caught up in another dangerous country which YOUR country has partook in and all people do is send them money and never put them in a safe environment. And yes Lily can help to build and fund extra homes. We don’t know what she does behind the scenes.

    She's not apologising for me!
    The camps in Calais are nothing to do with me.
    Where does she draw the line?
    How many millions does she think we can absorb before even she says too much?
    Would she ever say too much?
    Would she care of the system collapsed and there was no national heath service?
    Because there must be a limit before the "free" system fails... the number of migrants is endless... does she think we should take all for ever and a day?
    ...
    These people are in a safe country already... why doesn't she apologise for France?
    These are ECONOMIC migrants.
    More free stuff in the UK than in France.

    • @Bibbabble
      @Bibbabble 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      She's apologising because America and the U.K. originally armed the Taliban to fend off the Soviet Union which turned out to be an incredibly bad decision. IS only exists because we have been selling weapons to them and have caused the breakdown of their governments because we're thirsty for oil in the Middle East. If it wasn't for the greed of our governments, none of this would have happened. She's also apologising that although we promised to let these children in to be with their family's we are now turning our backs on them. It's disgusting and we should be ashamed of our country in that respect. Not ashamed of ourselves personally, but that we're sitting back and letting this happen. Imagine if that was your child.

      We can't protect British children from abuse in the care system. I've heard allegations that hundreds of refugee children have gone missing in the UK. These children will be vulnerable to abusers if they enter the UK. I don't want them here unless stringent measures are in place to ensure their safety and reunite those who have family members here with the appropriate loved one.

    • @Bibbabble
      @Bibbabble 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Did you watch the video? The child wants to get to Britain because his father lives here. You cannot claim benefits as an illegal immigrant. And after bombing their country and arming the people that want to kill them, welcoming a very small percentage of the refugees is the least we can do. There are far more British people scrounging off the benefit system, are you as outraged about that?

When SJW's first started ramping up their hysteria a lot of liberals turned to the right, but I actually went far left. Traditional leftism as in the USSR and Yugoslavia is far from being 'PC' as modern western SJW's are, in fact even homosexuality was illegal in most leftist states while it was legal in many capitalist states. I don't go that far, but neither do I think the left should care about made up genders or 'cultural appropriation or open borders bullshit, leftism should be patriotic and secure their borders. Probably the stupidest thing is how modern lefties suck up to islamists, compared to the USSR who went to war against the taliban, or the Yugoslavian/ Serbian Army who fought against Albanian and Bosniak Muslims

      Try and understand our own plp have issues and if we can't help our own how can we be expected to help others. To add we have helped me and many others are sick of helping people who by in large get a massive free pass in life.
      Many Syrians are given homes here. Where's my home?
      That's the issue me and many have we ignore our own and plp like Lilly and the government just want to look majestic to others when in fact they are so shallow most can see through the rubbish.
      Saying sorry saying sorry for all we do in the world. No she stepped over a line and this has to stop. We have an a population that's out of control we have pension issue, debt, a looming care crisis in the care industry which may self destruct in less than a hundred years a crumbling nhs.
      We help we try and I say we try and help as many as we can but this is just pandering she doesn't care about all the male suicides or domestic violence against women here no she and many others aim for what's popular it's shallow dirty and then putting our country down.
      A country that sends millions in aid to the detriment of our own plp. We spit on the white man in the street corner but worship the immigrant I'm sick of it. We need balance that's what we need we can give more when and if we help our own.

Here, you evidently have a woman who is trying to help those who are in dire need of humanitarian aid and what does she get in return? Absolute bollocks from thick people. Let's face it, she's doing a damn lot more than what you lot are doing behind a computer screen. She is obviously trying to raise awareness of the matter by going with the BBC to speak to these people. I can not believe how callous and cold people are being. We are humans, killing other humans for the sake of money and welfare. There is children involved here - and nobody seems to give a toss. People are dying, do you not get that?

The fact you have made a presumption of my sexual preferences clearly indicates that you my friend lack intellect. I also pay taxes and I also work my arse off therefore I have just as much of an equal say. The most crucial and frankly paramount point here is that humans are killing humans for absolutely no reason. I only DREAM our MP’s had as much compassion as this.
      Nobody gives a damn, and it should speak volumes that somebody like Lily Allen, a pop star outside of the political arena has to go and do all the work our government should have done. Humanising the experience of refugees, and shedding light on the true nature of the crisis, not just right wing conspiracies and talking points.
      I am horrified at how this country has painted refugees in such an inhumane light. They’re human beings fleeing war, terror; religious persecution, famine and violence. If you can’t imagine yourself being in this situation then you’re lucky, because this is the reality for people all over the world.
      You can’t vilify somebody for their pot luck of where they were born. That is not right.

Neither I or my country has anything to apologise for .....Lilly Allen you should be ashamed of yourself , over the years you have exploited the media , made ridiculous amounts of money on the backs and whims of young children who looked up to you and your music . Even though most of it was done while you were high on drugs they still bought your music and looked up to you , drugs might I add that profits currently now and then went directly into funding terrorism . Now you have children I imagine the guilt you have on your shoulders is a lot to carry , don't make out this trip was for them , it was for you just so you could feel better about yourself . The U.K. has done more for struggling countries around the world than most ever have , don't dare apologise for all of us , just to feed your own empty guilty life ....

      You're damn right I don't have any sympathy for these economic migrants, they're not mugging lorry drivers, chucking petrol bombs at armed guards and stealing from Calais residents so they can be safe, if they were truly interested in their own safety then they would have stayed in one of the perfectly safe countries they had to pass through (like the country they are in now) to get to England.
      These people are here purely so they smuggle themselves over to England to take advantage of our benefits, free housing, education and healthcare. These people are not refugees, they're opportunists that are in it purely for the money and easy life.

      These people are economic migrants living in an illegally constructed camp, they are there because they want to cross over to the UK to live an easy life of benefit scrounging and taking advantage of our free health care, education and council based housing.
      These people are NOT refugees, if they were seeking a safe place to live then the would have stopped in Austria, Germany or Italy or any of the other safe countries they passed through in order to get to the UK, these people are opportunists who mug, steal and attack people to get their way.
      To put it bluntly they have no place here and we certainly don't want them because they're not going to contribute in any way shape or form.

    • @talkthruthenight2299
      @talkthruthenight2299 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      GranthTheGreen Yeah, bet they wanted us to bomb them too, so they could have an easy life, huh? I would like to see you have your entire life destroyed, have to put yourself and your loved ones in boats you don't know are safe just so you can survive. Those children and families come to England because they already have family there, or because they simply can speak English. Immigrants contribute millions to your economy: statistically, they work harder for less money. You believing that they don't contribute just goes to show that you are uninformed (and if you are, certainly not from academic sources). How can you look at a child and see an attacker, a thief? How can you erase their struggle, their suffering, their grief and see a stereotype? Have you been to a refugee asylum? I have worked with those children. And believe it or not, those families are PEOPLE, not devils with big plans to steal your health care. They JUST want to survive and see their children grow up safe. That is the overwhelming majority of the refugees. Peanuts kill more people than refugees every year. Have people given up on peanuts though? The worth of freedom and human rights and justice should be far greater than the fear of the other.
      You guys are cowards. You sacrifice your country's values for your fear, and you erase your own humanity as soon as you are asked to recognise it in someone who doesn't look like you.

      Anus British, as born and bred brits aka not immigrants. Stranger danger is statistically rare. The people who will rape you are most probably in your circle (aka family, friends). Considering that refugees are arriving or have arrived recently in the country, it is extremely unlikely that they be part of that group. There are rapists everywhere, but they target women who are close to them. So it is, therefore, unlikely for a person who is a born and bred citizen of Britain and has no connection to refugees in their closer circle to be raped by an immigrant. It happens, but much rarer. Feel free to do the research yourself.
