- Today Architectural Digest is welcomed to Brooklyn, New York by David Harbour and Lily Allen for a tour of their exuberant family townhouse. Working hand in hand with AD100 designer Billy Cotton and architect Ben Bischoff of MADE, Lily and David have created an exciting and singular home within their stately late-19th-century brownstone in Carroll Gardens. “Lily is someone who lives with color in a deeper way than most. Her taste is bold, silly, fun, eccentric-it’s exciting,” says the Stranger Things actor and star of the recent blood-splattered Christmas spectacular Violent Night. “I’ve always been interested in interiors, and I’ve always done my own homes. But this was a big undertaking, and I needed help.” says Allen. “Together, Billy and I tried to reach for something weird and wonderful.”

Lily is constantly cross-armed, letting out these weird stifled laughs, not a single moment of connection or touch, David with his peacock "i'm the owner" postureg, the awkward name dropping... It honestly felt like a "let's pretend for the camera that I don't hit you" moment, extremely uncomfortable to watch.

As such, some men become woefully insecure at the notion of decorating, especially in the bedroom, with such colors. It is unfortunate. I've known many women that have had to eschew their favorite colors because their husband did not approve.

Pink was seen as a lighter, softer version of the powerful and bold red - a color associated with strength and courage, traits traditionally associated with men. Blue, on the other hand, was seen as a more delicate color, reminiscent of the Virgin Mary and thus linked to femininity. It wasn't until the 1940s that the color associations were reversed, with pink becoming a color associated with girls and blue with boys.
@dead_redux I haven't the slightest idea as to why I am only just seeing this now! In actuality, I did know this history associated with both colors. I appreciate you articulating that in these comments. I believe it was the inauguration ball gown worn by Mamie Eisenhower that essentially solidified Pink becoming widely feminized in cultural perception and significance.

A breathe of fresh air on AD. The house is sophisticated, eclectic but feels genuinely authentic rather than the simply picture perfect. This is a real house enjoyed by its occupants everyday. I forgot how much I loved lily, her episode of in the wardrobe on British vogue was my favourite, what a true gem she is ❤
5:33 her saying "and they delivered for you baby" to his floral and swan taps request in the bath room, so sweet! they have a special love and life! the decor suits them well.
If I ever went to their house I wouldn't want to touch anything and wear a biohazard suit, because of how much everything probably cost.. I bet that tiger couch costs so much and carpet. And the wallpaper must be thousands.. oo wait don't tell me 😂 I smiled through the whole video

It's a new home and it shows. His old place was a unique work of art that he had a while to put together. It takes a while to curate a house even if you have the world's best interior designer. You have to get a feeling for it's lights, moods, nooks and walkways. I would love to have AG visit them again in 5 years.
@@TheBanterBandit 5:08 I hope they're going to change the swan bathroom and make it moodier pulling the navy blue from the carpet up to the walls with a wallpaper with smaller pattern. That color on the walls with a gold or tan/milky pattern. This room is way too light blue right now, a darker, less busy wallpaper would transform it.
The celebs in AD 'cribs' videos don't actually live in the houses featured. They are just used as showcases for the interior designers.

I listened to Lily Allen's music while studying at uni, and many years later, I read her memoir. She was in a rather dark place then, and it's very nice to see her all smiley and happy now. Makes me smile as well :)

@@apples8872 He said he designed the whole bathroom though... and the whole floral room. He definitely was in charge of a lot of these design choices haha. Honestly, the cleanest rooms seemed to be Lily's (kitchen and her wardrobe).
@@thespankmyfrank I took all of that as tongue in cheek, an inside joke between David and and Lily. Those rooms like the bath room definitely seemed like a place she spearheaded and he was likely coming along for the ride and like jokingly loved the swan taps so added that.
The moment with the inocuous little lamp in the kitchen that reminds you of a street lamp when all the other lights are out is so well thought out. Definitely set the tone for how full of love this home is
I love that they're home is so funky and cool. I remember watching David's video a year back and falling in love with the way he designed his apartment and finding inspiration in it. Great to see him and Lily having similar tastes. Their house is beautiful.

Definitely not the kind of video I would normally watch but that first few seconds where DH makes his wife constantly giggle was great. They kept up that dynamic all the way through the video too. Very sweet.
What an amazing property, it truly is something else! I always wonder though with these types of things, how difficult they are to sell-not just because of the price, but when a place is that customized to a very particular taste & style, like someone may like certain features but hate or want to change others, which would be a ton of work & time.For 2023, it’s hard to nail down specific predictions for the housing market is because it’s not yet clear how quickly or how much the Federal Reserve can bring down inflation and borrowing costs without tanking buyer demand for everything from homes to cars.
@Charlotte Claire yeah, transportation, e-commerce among other sectors are expected to experience growth, but who knows, the market has been a basket of surprises.
I'm guessing their home is worth millions if not tens of millions. Anyone who has money to buy a house like that when they want to move, has the money to replace carpet and paint which is really the extent of most of what they did. To be fair, most people purchasing in that price range will redo everything just like how Lily and David redid the house to their tastes. That's the benefit of being rich lol you get the ability to make a room tiger print and not care that it might make it less valuable to the next buyer because you might decide to make it cheetah print in two years yourself
The advice I always give homeowners is to make your home YOUR home. Don't worry about what will look good to other people, just completely immerse yourself in your space.
A wall can always be repainted or whatever else.

I freaking LOVED David's loft so I was so surprised that he wanted all the florals and pink! He is a man and a father and embraces this aesthetic that is typically seen as feminine. Their goofiness and weirdness exudes love.

Love their chemistry for sure....their decorating taste....well can't say it is mine. Other than the kitchen, most rooms felt like stepping back into my grandparents place. Way too busy for my likening, but each to their own. They are definitely a couple I would enjoy hanging out with.

To me it's the same thing: too many patterns everywhere. It's over the top in every way.... even the way they interact with each other feels to me more like they're playing in a movie set than in real life.

I have followed her from the beginning and always loved her music and felt she genuinely has interesting things to say about society. The single The Fear from 15 years ago was so uncannily prophetic and absolutely spot on. It is the social media dystopian world in which we find ourselves in the 2020s . Her ska / mento / accustic reggae cover of Keane's everybody's changing is one of the best covers I've ever heard and her song the littlest things is hands down one of the best written songs of the 00's, so sad, so poignant.

To think I remember David's apartment tour that was 3 years ago he was single but happy and content and now seeing how even more happier he is now with his wife lily and her daughters living together! Who knew so much would happen in just 3 years so so sooooo happy for him ahhhhhhhh how time flies by!!
I just love the many facets of this house. Pretty much accentuates the inhabitants. What an awesome couple. Their personalities, melt into the design and colors of their place.
WOW! One of the best homes presented by entertainment people I've ever seen. Usually the entertainment types go for flashy , trendy and sterile...but you two successfully combine classic style with fun modern aesthetic as well. Really can't say enough about your home. Even when you go wild...like in the tiger(?) screening room...it's done very well. You focused on the carpet and the couch matching...but then you stopped...you didn't introduce really anything else so your eyes can rest but at the same time enjoy the fun room. And of course upstairs with all that great wallpaper and classic styling...well you guys definitely did it right. AND you're so gracious in your hosting. So many people when they come on these shows present their homes like it's a visit to the Louvre! Really lovely couple...you interact with each other in a relaxed friendly manner and all I can say is more power to you!

Not going to lie I’m not a huge fan of carpet in bathrooms but I will say is I love seeing a house on her with real personality instead it’s a rare sight nowadays and I love that they seem to be a perfect match for each other

Amazing to see how David was very active and excited during the design. The way he chose the wallpaper and faucets, when they are a considered a more feminine taste, makes it seem they share similar points.
