Andre needed to get some thicker skin. He was a little bit sensitive, according to just about all shoot interviews about him, and was obviously really super duper insecure. He's still on my Mount Rushmore nevertheless, but personally, like all of us, he could have been better. And this one you can't blame on his condition, like you can him perhaps being rude to fans bothering him.@@michaelkrolewski7406

    1. Studd was a huge, lumbering big man, and that was also the character he played. He didn't have moves like DiBiase, and he didn't need them for his role. He was also good enough on the mic to put himself over.
    2. He is universally recognized as a nice guy.
    3. I'm skeptical of this stuff about Andre not liking him. Bundy said it was BS. When asked about it, he said in a ridiculing voice, "How could anyone not like John?" (See #2.)
Studd stepping over the top rope like Andre and insisting that he be called "The Giant John Studd" was part of the work to build heat between him and Andre. Andre knew the business and understood that this stuff from Studd was filling plenty of seats for their showdowns. Andre could read a bank statement, and he certainly knew that having a big rival would make those statements look great. (Plus, it was obvious to Andre that Studd was smaller and a less capable performer, so there was no real threat that Studd would ever take his headline spot.)

Disappointed to hear this from Ted and from Jake- John Studd was a good guy by all accounts, and his work in the ring, while not to the technical level of Ted or Jake, didn't need to be. John was almost 6'10, and huge. What did you want, toe holds and suplexes? His biggest weakness, it seems, was he was usually a heel, and was suddenly a face against Ted- so he expected Ted to call the match. This may not have been easy for him as he had been a heel for years, and got over by smashing opponents.

He had no promo skills-Blassie & Heenan had done that for him in his heel run from 1982-1986, no charisma & no wrestling ability. Him being a nice guy is irrelevant to the illogical push he was getting & playing a babyface while still behaving like a heel was bizarre.

I got to see John Studd wrestle live when he was with GCW and they came to my town back in May 1982. I think he wasn't feeling well that night because he barely wrestled. He and Super Destroyer wrestled Michael Hayes and Brad Armstrong. Whenever Studd got tagged in, he would throw one punch, then tag right back out to Super Destroyer. Super D pretty much wrestled that whole match by himself. After that match, they had to come back out for a Battle Royal, which everyone figured Studd would win, but he just leaned back against the corner, and whenever anyone tried to engage him, he just waved them away. I remember Michael Hayes had eliminated Ray Stevens, and was looking for someone to battle, he sees Studd in the corner, and raises his fists, but Studd just shook his head no, and Hayes went after someone else. Halfway through the Battle Royal, John summoned Ron Bass over. They exchanged punches, then Bass pushed Studd over the top rope, but John wasn't going to make it look that easy. He held onto the top rope, with half of his body in the ring, until all of the other wrestlers came over and pushed him out. I always thought he must have been feeling ill that night, and couldn't give 100%. He returned the following month to wrestle Bad Bad Leroy Brown, and he looked fine. he even won the match by count out.

    2. The thing about André not liking John always confused me. John claiming to be a giant, stepping over the top rope, etc., was all part of his gimmick. André should have been mad at Vince and the bookers, not John Studd.

I can't think of anything Big John Studd did as even close to Kane. O yehh, he did win that Royal Rumble, and as a kid I wondered what happened to him, because he didn't stay long during that run.
Was Big John Studd a big draw? it seemed like any big guy in that Era vs Hogan was a draw, but does it in fact make those heels draws? Especially when they struggle to draw when not with Hogan or Andre.
I woulda put the tag belts on Big John and Bundy, just had em crush everyone. I know neither was around during Wrestlemania 5, but if they were treated better, they probably stick around.
Have the Mega Powers beat them, but Macho Man vacate the tag belt due to thinkin Hogan messing with Elizabeth, probably the week after Macho destroy him in the locker room.
Than a tag tournament with the finals being at Wrestlemania 5, New champions and than, you could push Bundy and Studd as openents to him.
I remember thinking in 1989, hmmm wonder who Hogan going to fight, they killed of all the heels, the best heels now in 1989 were smaller because all the big fat or tall heels had been fed to Hogan, and never fixed after the fact. Next thing you know we have Main Events with Zeus.....

They're done growing and the person is done growing. steroids cannot cause an increase in height after the epiphyseal growth plates close. Conversely, certain steroids (ones that convert to estrogen) can cause the epiphyseal growth plates to close prematurely. Problem with Studd as a face is he was a poor promo-which had been been covered by Heenan in his prior run as a heel, he had no charisma & was a poor wrestler. He basically had his size & in 1989 & a cool robe, but he looked the same size as Bossman, was smaller than Akeem, then they bought Zeus in & obviously was still dwarfed by Andre-in his prior run it was just Andre bigger & Bundy was his partner, not his opponent.
