I love how he added lyrics...especialy about Lloyd Webber...(especially knowing that this operetta was composed back in the late 19th century, and lloyd is a mid 20th century composer)this is great!
The thing i love about his play is that you have to write most of the gags into it yourself. Gilbert and Sullivan don't write them for you. :) They did a fantastic job making the Major General quirky and fun.
"...or I'll be singing this song till Australia's a repub-e-lic!" I remember wondering what made Gilbert come up with that line back in the 1870s. I'm still rather disappointed that he didn't actually write it.
My favorite thing about Penzance is that it feels totally different in every production because there are half a dozen characters that can steal the show. It's a brilliant move by G&S, keeps it fresh
I remember going and seeing this performance! Oh, the memories! Oh the hilarity! Oh the brain going a million k's an hour trying to translate the Major General for my young mind XD
I usually don't like it when actors in a musical add extra acting into the songs, but this was extremely well-done and worked amazingly well with the character.
I do love the G&S originals, HOWEVER! i thorougly enjoyed these versions when they toured, this part, was my favorite (apart from when jon opened his shirt a few times :P) Thanks for posting this, great memories!!!
Saw this live when I was 11 or 12. Even better live than on film!! I seriously thought that Jon English in his purple pants was David Bowie from Labyrinth!! lol
It always amazes me that who ever it is playing the major general can keep up with that fast tempo (the segment of Family Guy no doubt represents the rehearsal of the song till the actor can keep up with the tempo)
The theatre production that I'm with, we recently did Pirates Of Penzance .. I played a Pirate in the 1st half of the show, then played a Policeman in the 2nd half ... and I absolutely LOVED performing in it! :D
i think it was vry good, it wasn't supposed to be an equal grounds to G&S's original masterpiece, it's like a skit, i liked the part about him being the drink... really ahead of his time!
I have watched a few versions of this song, but I think I prefer this one. The whole show was very entertaining, RIR Jon English. He was excellent as the pirate king.
I saw her in the megamix she in the Mikado and get the chance to sing alongside her co stars in Pirates including Derek the General in Pirates nice to see reunited with her Co stars from Pirates.
This is hilarious, no wonder Animaniacs spoofed this song! XD The Animaniacs version is called "I Am the Very Model of a Cartoon Individual". It isn't as verbally funny as this, but it is more physically funny.
The new verse: I am the very model of a modern major-general. I've information seminal and cultural and federal, And regional and functional and fictional and textual, Abominable, scriptural, confessional, and sexual, Impeccable, improbable, deplorable, debatable, Unpleasant, undemanding, unimportant, untranslatable, Imponderable, mystical, ballistical, and germinal, In facts so bloody boring that it's positively terminal. So let's conclude this larricking commercial money grubber quick, Or I'll be singing this song 'til Australia's a republic, But still in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral, I am the very model of a modern major-general.
Well in order to be invisible, they must create huge amounts of power, which means incredibly big generators installed to them, so mass must be rather great.
@NinjaxPrime It is an operetta - it was composed specifically for two choruses - a male chorus and a female chorus. Musically it requires both choruses. There is always an element of the suspension of disbelief in musical theater - afterall people don't normally sing to each other. And besides - one of the great innovations of G & S is making the choruses into their own characters. But the musical considerations I think dominate and the trio does not render Sullivan's choral writing well.
So let's conclude this Larry King commercial monograbic quick or I'll be singing this song til Australia's a republic, but with a dash of bitters or some tonic in your general I am the very bottle of a Perrier that's mineral.
We can definitely tell that I am a Mass Effect Fan, because as soon as I heard this, I started hearing Mordin Solus singing his parody of this in my head. I like this better though. :)
It could be called an ancestor. The "patter song" has been around for hundreds of years. As far as the Tom Lehrer thing, he's right, but it's the other way around. I take it that the sigh implies that there's no arguing with someone whose mind is made up, despite the facts being wrong....
Yeah. That's what I like about it. Have about as good a time with it as possible. And by the way, what is the maximum of encores one should do to a song?
"Caravanseri" and "wards in chancery" are supposed to rhyme, Mabel. Doesn't matter which one is "correct." Don't assume Gilbert didn't know what he was doing, please.
"We want some more. Make something UP!"
That's actually my reaction to this song. I never want it to end.
How he combined his on stage antics with the song was astounding!
The added lyrics are great. "I am the very bottle of a perrier that's mineral."
Pure genius.
Robbie Hagberg great that's good yeah that's that's really funny I don't want your guys talking about
I watch and sing this video several times a year for over 9 years if not longer
His interaction with the other cast members while her was performing was great. Very talented.
I love how he added lyrics...especialy about Lloyd Webber...(especially knowing that this operetta was composed back in the late 19th century, and lloyd is a mid 20th century composer)this is great!
"and tell Lloyd Webber's music from originals Puccini wrote"
haha that's awesome
The thing i love about his play is that you have to write most of the gags into it yourself. Gilbert and Sullivan don't write them for you. :) They did a fantastic job making the Major General quirky and fun.
Delightful! Simply delightful. Thank you for sharing this. This made me happy today 😃😃
Major Gen: "It's called a horse"
Pirates: "OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH"
I love that part
"...or I'll be singing this song till Australia's a repub-e-lic!"
I remember wondering what made Gilbert come up with that line back in the 1870s. I'm still rather disappointed that he didn't actually write it.
Every time this is performed it gets changed over time xD
@@jessicles23 this, a little list...sweeney todds day of the week?
magicamadeye think it changes with the times a bit which is cool
@@jessicles23 yep
One of the more creative versions I've sen of this great G&S aire.
I still cannot believe this major general was ALSO coco in the mikado as well! Ah Derek Metzger! Incredibly talent indeed :)
This incorrect. Derek Metzger only did Major General and New Zealand tour of Nanki Poo. Not Koko.
I'm surprised anyone can sing this without getting their tongue tied into a knot.
That's the whole point.
He's funny! He added a lot of weird things - it became the Major General show....not sure how I feel about that, but I laughed. A lot. :)
Kim Roberts done right, the Major General can own the whole show.
"Yes, witty...as in*half*-witty."
Gotta remember that one! XD
First play I ever saw, my wife's family love SG productions
I remember watching them at princess theatre when i was a kid with my mum. Was the most memorable time of childhood!
I've always been fond of this song thought that was the best I've ever heard it was even better with the (more) added on!!!
His interaction with the other cast members while her was performing was great. Very talented. Their chatting with the conductor was great.
It's a FUN song to learn to sing!!! I'm learning it for my next time at karaoke!!!
I was 13 when I saw this. Absolutely brilliant ^_^
That ranks up there as one of the best renditions I've seen of this song. Especially the new bit he put in, really funny.
Saw this live when I was 11 or 12. Even better live than on film!! I seriously thought that Jon English in his purple pants was David Bowie from Labyrinth!! lol
I did as well
This is an excellent performance! I thoroughly enjoyed it. Great job!
I love this version!!
It always amazes me that who ever it is playing the major general can keep up with that fast tempo (the segment of Family Guy no doubt represents the rehearsal of the song till the actor can keep up with the tempo)
now that's acting. I was enthralled by his performance.
watched loads of different versions now .. and this is my favourite :')
funniest version I have seen and heard.
Thank you!!! Thank you!!! I've had this song stuck in my head for the past Month!!! Thank you!!! I would kiss your feet if I were able to!!!
Derek Metzger's awesome!
Absolute brilliance
I love this song!!! x3
The theatre production that I'm with, we recently did Pirates Of Penzance .. I played a Pirate in the 1st half of the show, then played a Policeman in the 2nd half ... and I absolutely LOVED performing in it! :D
That is one of the funniest things I've ever seen! Thanks!
Hilarious. I love it, even the extra at the end.
i think it was vry good, it wasn't supposed to be an equal grounds to G&S's original masterpiece, it's like a skit, i liked the part about him being the drink... really ahead of his time!
I don't think I'll ever be able to sing this song, at least not without tying my tongue into a knot in the process. XD
There shall be no true beauty in the world until Kelsey Grammer sings this little ditty.
George rose in the Broadway production of Pirates man he was so funny and he could sing with fast speed.
I have watched a few versions of this song, but I think I prefer this one. The whole show was very entertaining, RIR Jon English. He was excellent as the pirate king.
ABSOLUTELY, ABSURDLY HILARIOUS!!!
This was very very well done, second favorite version of this show.
which one is your favorite
That was the best play recording I have ever seen!
Wonderful
This is a wonderful contrast to the video of George Rose from the 1983 production at Delacorte Theatre, but both are FANTASTIC!!!
Thank you
This man is my IDOL! lol
one of the cleverest songs ever written
Damn good job! Really funny, even if it's a bit slow.
I think they added all the seen play extras to try compensate for the speed
Sparro Sereg'Rochben That would make sense!
Absolutely brilliant :D
Great mouth control, and good stumbling over what's not there.
BRAVO!
I saw this in theatre once years ago. Although someone else played the major general.
oh its a good word! it mans, it means something witty! as in half witty. hahaha i love this guy
awesome!
George Rose he was the most funniest major general..this guy comes second.
Simon did play Nanki-Poo in Australia but they didn't record him for DVD. You can find a few videos with him though. Definitely worth watching!
I was in a production of this (as a police officer) and the guy who was General Stanley was really good at the part. This guy's pretty good, too.
Not the fastest versionI have seen, but one of the funniest!
@SheaLang Helen Donaldson is playing the lead in this AUSTRALIAN production.
I saw her in the megamix she in the Mikado and get the chance to sing alongside her co stars in Pirates including Derek the General in Pirates nice to see reunited with her Co stars from Pirates.
This is hilarious, no wonder Animaniacs spoofed this song! XD
The Animaniacs version is called "I Am the Very Model of a Cartoon Individual". It isn't as verbally funny as this, but it is more physically funny.
"In modern gunnery bang hehe" lol weirdest one yet also the "silly govenor...what?...oh not u the fello with the apple in his head"
I really enjoy this actors charisma in this scene but he doesn't get fast enough
I was sent here by the Geico commercial.
You, my dear man, win 100 internets for this. Have a nice day!
Dude, Thanks.
Honestly this guy is far better than the return season guy. He's the guy who does those Queen Elizabeth & Sir Jo Impressions
''Put thoes in some water will you. And then was your hands''.
The new verse:
I am the very model of a modern major-general.

Or I'll be singing this song 'til Australia's a republic,
But still in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I am the very model of a modern major-general.
But with a dash of bitters or some tonic in your gin-eral
I am the very bottle of a Perrier that's mineral
Try adding the end of Season 3 reboot to that Pirates of Pensance Playlist.
cool!
wat a ham!
Yep. All are professional actors.
Well in order to be invisible, they must create huge amounts of power, which means incredibly big generators installed to them, so mass must be rather great.
The end of Reboot Season 3, brought me here!
Nope. It's a performance form Australia. There's plenty more on the site.
@NinjaxPrime It is an operetta - it was composed specifically for two choruses - a male chorus and a female chorus. Musically it requires both choruses. HE'S SUPPOSED TO!!
So let's conclude this Larry King commercial monograbic quick or I'll be singing this song til Australia's a republic, but with a dash of bitters or some tonic in your general I am the very bottle of a Perrier that's mineral.
Those invisible apples pack a punch
I adore this version of PoP - if only the Mabel wasn't so weak, it'd be perfect. Jon English is a LEGEND.
is this professional? This is AMAZING!
We can definitely tell that I am a Mass Effect Fan, because as soon as I heard this, I started hearing Mordin Solus singing his parody of this in my head.
I like this better though. :)
YES YES I AM A MAJOR GENERAL *pirates scream* XDDD
TOUNGUE TWISTERRR!!!!!!
Oh... If Derek could be this fantastic with Nanki-Poo, Mikado would be much enjoyable.
@legomaniac1128
the Australian military: Drop bears with apples
It could be called an ancestor. The "patter song" has been around for hundreds of years. As far as the Tom Lehrer thing, he's right, but it's the other way around. I take it that the sigh implies that there's no arguing with someone whose mind is made up, despite the facts being wrong....
Can you tell that person that is General. He is parked on double line,😊
Yeah. That's what I like about it. Have about as good a time with it as possible. And by the way, what is the maximum of encores one should do to a song?
"Caravanseri" and "wards in chancery" are supposed to rhyme, Mabel.

I agree.
How many encores of "Never Mind the Why and Wherefore" from HMS Pinafore or "With Cat-Like Tread" from PIRATES can you take?
@goombajoe715 That's you! He's the one I always watch!
we did this play at gale i was in it iwas the major general it was awsome but hard
