    Makita has always been regarded as having one of the best impact drivers on the market, especially their Made in Japan models. But is there another impact from Japan that you should be checking out? We test the Hikoki 36v Triple Hammer - known as the Metabo HPT Triple Hammer Bolt in USA.

    I have the old DB model, and also ordered the 36DC from Japan...same one you have black/gold special edition lol...Its amazing. But honestly, the DB model is the better buy, especially since it can be found for bauer prices.
    I will say though, I prefer the controls on the left side. I know it's different from anything else, but I believe most people dislike purely due to muscle memory because every other brand is in the middle foot area generally. But I think on the side like the DB is actually a more natural position for it...Can't beat Green in my book. Only wish they expanded the line further, into OPE, etc. Cheers.

    What has been absolutely fascinating to watch is makitas absolute obsession with making impact drivers. It's a fairly modern tool and I don't ever recall a time where a tool manufacturer has released a new model of tool over and over and over and over.

    • @TinkerWithTools

  • @stevew3978
    @stevew3978 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Raw power isn't the only desirable attribute for impact drivers. Most of the latest impact drivers are more than adequately powerful enough as they are. In fact, they may even be too powerful. At 1900 in-pounds of torque, they are strong enough to snap even impact-rated bits. To achieve that 1900 to 2000 in-pounds of torque, many of these latest impact drivers spin way too fast even at the lowest impact/speed setting. When they spin too fast, they strip the screw heads.

    • @TinkerWithTools
      @TinkerWithTools  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When I have purchased from ebay I have only done it with a single seller (momanty) and I have never been charged anything else other than the price they disclose plus sales tax. So on the Hikoki that I ordered it was $148 total and $10 approximately was sales tax based on where I live. Shipping was free so I am guessing they have just built any of that into the price.

    Does the battery size affect power? I got the 18v package deal you mentioned, with 3.0 batteries. It was just the best mid-range deal out there. But I was pleasantly surprised by how nice it is (especially the trigger). I do work outside a lot, so the ip rating is nice too (although I wonder if it’s genuinely more water and dust resistant than yellow or red).

    • @TinkerWithTools
      @TinkerWithTools  ปีที่แล้ว

      All the batteries are going to operate at 18v for an 18v tool (36v for a 36v tool) but the bigger batteries experience less voltage drop under use typically. This causes the tool to run better in my experience. But it will still get the job done on a smaller battery unless you are really pushing it.

      I think the comfort comparison between this XGT model, the first Gen XGT and then the 171/172 (xdt16/19) are all very similar. The 173 get's bumped down in comfort simply because of the handle size issue I talk about in that video. I build log and timber frame homes and the 18v triple hammmer has been the crew favorite for years. We added some gen3 Milwaukees months ago but almost no one uses them. Fast as hell, but your hand goes numb if your using it for more than 10 minutes (and the trigger is God awful). The Makita is fantastic I'm sure, their impacts have always been, but their 40v is a hard buy in with almost no 18v cross compatibility and crazy pricing.

    • @TinkerWithTools
      @TinkerWithTools  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The main focus of the test was the 36v Hikoki. So a natural comparison was the Japanese 40v XGT, but I also wanted to included the 18v Triple Hammer for a comparison point. Is it a perfect comparison, no, but I think there is still value there.

  • @reginalb124
    @reginalb124 ปีที่แล้ว

    Torque Test Channel testing was pretty disappointing. I mean, I get that you don't need a TON of power in an impact driver, but man the triple hammers are weak. And the Bolt gets even less power than its predecessors. The 40V Makita also doesn't outperform its 18V cousins, which are what I prefer.

    • @TinkerWithTools
      @TinkerWithTools  ปีที่แล้ว

      The triple hammer doesn’t test well in their toque testing but in real life it does the job well for me. It’s smooth and nice to use.

    • @reginalb124
      @reginalb124 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TinkerWithTools My TD172 is also smooth and nice to use, but with power much more in line with the competition.
      It appears to me that the folks at Hikoki/Metabo HPT/Hitachi had an interesting idea, marketed that idea, but it just didn't really turn out.
      I have definitely thought about getting one because of its IP rating, which is really nice. And of course, if it works for you, that's great! I think I would end up in places where I needed more torque out of it just a bit too often for it to work for me.

    NO Hikoki is not the best in Japan. Makita is. The new Hikoki WH36DC that I bought from Hikoki Japan is not made there the tool was made in China just like your typical Makita tools that are sold at the home Depot. Makita however is purely made in Japan except on some of their cheap and basic models, The TD-171 (XDT-16), TD-172 (XDT-19) are made in Japan with Japanese materials. And also there's a New Impact Driver again that come out for 2023 The New Makita TD-173DZ I do not know or not sure what's gonna be the model number for that when that tool come out in The North American market it could be or may be the new XDT-20 maybe! I plan on getting the new TD-173 when the budget allows. I do like the akita impacts more but given the price differential, the metabo HPT or hikoki isn't a bad way to get an impact with similar feel. But yes, it's not made in Japan like the Japanese makita.
