Being one who grew up in San Francisco in the 60's l know first hand rock was never supposed to be main stream. But because of the success of those hippie bands like Santana, Steve Miller, the Grateful Dead, and the Jefferson Airplane the music became co-opted by the mainstream media. Band-Maid harkens back to that day and in more ways than l care to go into here. Sacramento loves Band-Maid.

The US recording industry also autotuned everything to death. You can't bend a note as in blues, it will be forced to robotic sameness.
J-rock doesn't make a habit of that. Band-Maid can bend notes any way they want and it stays. They ROCK in every way possible and some we never anticipated.
I grew up with rock beginning in the early 1950s. Blues, rockabilly, Chuck Berry, Elvis, Roy Orbison... all through the 60s, 70s, 80s... Band-Maid is one of those epic bands that changes everything. Been following them and buying their music over 5 years or so now and they are my #1 from my first listen (Choose Me in my case).
It is not the Japanese way to brag. Americans accustomed to musicians doing that might think oh, they themselves don't think they're very good. False. They know exactly who they are and what they can do. And they are at this moment becoming even better.

Band-Maid have their own genre and Kanami's recent compositions are pushing the envelope. Certainly they rock but they also include more complex melodies and very technical guitar and bass work supported by Akane's world class drum repetoire and Saiki's increasing vocal talent. They will surely develop their style and abilities to be recognised as the world class band that they are. Hip hop?????

One of the reasons they’re so good is their songwriting. Kanamamincho, Kanami off stage and Mincho on stage, records a demo and Miku writes the lyrics. However, they all have input so the song will be as good as possible. Misa, bassist, writes her own music for the songs and is a virtuoso on stage. Saiki, lead vocals, has the final decision on whether a song is complete.

I'm 63 and have loved Rock since my youth ( when rock was rock) but no band has captured my complete aknowledgement as much as this band has ... Their raw talent, musicality and stage presence are unsurpassed in today's rock world more often than not their live stages are better than their recordings (something few bands of old or present can claim) they are quite simply and undeniably in my opinion the best of the best that the genre has to offer today.

I found them in like 2015/2016 from youtube suggestions from watching Baby Metal videos. Its quite impressive the level of international success they had without any anime tie ins. You can def notice the increase in quality of there music when they were aloud to write/compose there own music.

Most of the newer music that I listen to is from Japan, Band-Maid, Aldious, Bridear, Marys Blood, Fate Gear, which is interesting because they're all female bands. Band-Maid is by far, my favorite!

The truth is you can always leave it up to Japan to keep music alive. When mainstream American hip-hop became too pop and started loosing substance in the lyrics, you had Japanese producer/dj like Nujabes keeping that classic boom bap sound alive.
Sadly Nujabes passed away 10 years ago, but chillhop/lo-fi channels on TH-cam are now some of the most stream channels.
Definitely hope to see BAND-MAID and the many great Japanese bands revitalized rock. I stopped listening to rock over 10 years ago, but these ladies sure got my interest back again.

An addendum if I may. Guys don't have a problem with them being a kick-ass rock and roll band. They have absolutely almost no women followers and fans. Everything I have viewed from them so far, especially outside of Japan. The crowds seem to be 90% or more guys. If they had half as many women fans as men fans. They would probably more than likely be more popular. Just by having the sheer number of more fans. That's my two cents and I'm sticking to it !

If you went to see any rock band, the crowd would probably be 90% guys, especially in the west. It's just the way it is, sadly. I think guys are more likely to go to a gig on their own than women. The women who do go seem to usually be with a husband/boyfriend.

The music industry in my country ( America ) basically died. When the diamond Merchants that run the entertainment industry. Figured out they could make money off of pumping the sewage known as rap music into the suburbs. Therefore vastly increasing not only in size the genre. But also in their revenue intake. If there was one defining moment this could be traced back to. It was when Aerosmith made a comeback. And did a collaboration on Walk This Way, with Run DMC. That was the start of downfall of the great genre known as rock and classic rock. These ladies in the group known as band maid are resurrecting that genre and carrying the banner. For Quality musicianship, great songs, likable personalities, with charismatic live performances. They are the real deal. Long live rock and roll long live band maid !

It can only be hoped that what you asked is true, but only partly. It is my opinion that Band-Maid is the future of QUALITY rock and roll. Do you remember the days of vinyl albums? How many times had you eagerly returned home from the record store,(yes, these used to exist) with your new album purchase and then spent an hour listening to what was your favorite band and only heard two or three songs that you actually liked? Band-Maid CDs, (yes, I bought the CDs), and it is the reverse. There are MAYBE one or two songs I DON'T like. Their musical skill is excellent, the cuteness (kawaii), is totally undeniable, and I am eagerly awaiting World Domination by my favorite new band, who are personally making my life better every day by their commitment to awesomeness!! GRUPPO! :)

I can't agree that rock can't or won't make a comeback. Hip Hop is losing steam as they lyrical substance just isn't as potent as it once was. Just look at all the hip hop head/ rapper reacts channels have popped up on TH-cam doing all the rock/metal reactions. Everything moves in cycles, and it's only a matter of time before rock music retakes center stage.

    • @Marcus_C51
      @Marcus_C51 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I'm inclined to agree--I think some younger fans who are getting exposed to rock are realizing what it's all about. And once they get a head full of Band Maid they are going to realize what they are missing! I've never quite understood how hip hop and rap could last as long as it has just due to the visual aspect of their shows alone. Who wants to see some dude walk around with a mic and their required athetic gear look while a DJ stands behind a console? It's pretty damn dull... Sure, it's often dressed up with a ton of dancers and I guess I'm so jaded I could care less because the choreography isn't very sensual or remotely interesting and always looks the same! I've sensed a steady fading of hip hop for years now and there is more actual singing now although most of the tunes are goddawful trashy pop crap.
Yes, I'm generalizing here but there is a real rock underground happening. I'm particularly impressed with Rival Sons, they have a really charismatic singer and a badass rhythm section with a good guitarist. They have the songs...I have a feeling they will break big in the next few years, they are in it for the long game. They're damn good and they know it-they won't quit anytime soon. I don't think they are quite as good as Band Maid, for the record, but they kick ass in that hard rock type style. Have some Led Zepp/Doors etc type of vibe. You're right, everything does move in cycles. Perhaps the Pandemic has caused people to get more into music and are discovering rock. I think gaming has caused some of the downturn of music, there are so many more distractions than there used to be. We shall see. In the meantime I'm going to enjoy Band Maid and all they bring to the table!

These songs are often very generic in all very similar. Propped up By corporate money because it's less of the risk. There is practically no instruments involved, Few skills, All the songs are designed to have similar sound. So the corporation doesn't have to invest that much money and risk losing a lot of money.

The future of Rock n Roll is in the hands of the music industry snobs! This industry never liked Rock to begin with, I'm 66 yrs Rock and Metal musician and Rock as we new back then with Elvis hipshaking upset the mainstream bible belt. The Ed Sullivan Show broke down the walls of the Rock snobs and if not for him our Rock would not die but instead continue in plain sight in an underground movement. But other TV Shows also Hullabaloo, Dick Clark, Where The Action Is, The Music Scene and (my cognitive functions fail to remember 'theres more') loved Rock n Roll and also could not deny the teen age infatuation all over America. Still the Big Wigs hated it and when decades later during the 80's of decadence, they bide they're time and said that Rock will enjoy their last 10 years and die! And they made it happen. The music changed to grunge as they enjoyed their first step to forced out Rock. The music industry was approached lately about if there would be any resurgence for Rock and their answer was every ten years there is a come back.Well it's been 22yrs? Don't count on an industry that is blending with all Idol type Shows! They are already rich and don't care, like David Geffen(of Geffen Records) meeting with a rich mogul and told him " But this Band will make you rich!" The rich backer laughed at him and replied "I'm already rich!" After pleading with the withering MTV executives they told him they will air this Band only 'once'...at 2 o'clock in the morning when (they thought) no one was up that late. This Band was Guns and Roses and the rest is history... The future of Rock depends on our reaction by going Hell or Highwater Battle Ready for the next new sensation and we need to go crazy together for it to happen like it happened for Guns and Roses! We love Band Maid...we'll have to show up!!! The future of Rock is up to us!

Grunge of the 90's more or less ruined western rock in my opinion. All the angst and feigned outrage just kind of rubbed off and left a big stain, so now everyone is just irretrievably grumpy.....Not in Japan!!!!....Where western music is tuneless, toneless and grooveless, Japanese bands still embrace melody and rhythm in ways that old guys like me can appreciate. So it matters not that they sing in another language...it's the music itself, and the way it FEELS...which is pretty dang good!!....

There is nothing to suggest that Band Maid is going to bring back rock in any way. Their audience size in Japan is still extremely small when compared to other popular bands. They have yet to play Budokan while Baby Metal and One Ok Rock have filled the 55,000 seat Tokyo dome on a regular basis. They have had no real impact on foreign album charts. Baby Metal is the only Asian group to ever hit #1 on Billboard's Rock chart while Band Maid has not had any impact to speak of. While on TH-cam they have a number of loyal fans the number of subscribers to their channel is low compared to other bands. While I like them well enough I also like The Warning Band's album Queen of the Murder Scene lots better.
Is Band Maid any better than Dir En Grey or Scandal or LoveBites? The thing is as popular as Baby Metal is world wide they are not the most popular in Japan. Band Maid shows little progress is breaking out of the pack of similar bands. They have a very long way to go
