As someone your age, with no clue about all these decisions this was the best video I could have watched today ! Lovely to know even you are struggling with the weight of all these pressures, and your advice on how you will end up where you are meant to be.

"wherever you end up is where you're meant to end up" I definitely 100% agree with this! I didn't get into my first or insurance choice of unis but I'm so happy where I am so in a way, all the stress and tears were worth it in the end :)

Good luck with the Ox application Jade! Sad to not see you joining the vlogger squad at Cambridge. I would definitely recommend taking a gap year, to de stress, travel and just grow as a person xx

Hey Jade! I had exactly the same situation when I was in sixth form. I was getting good grades, I enjoyed studying, etc. so I just presumed I'd go straight to uni. I went straight to uni (I did Theology at Oxford) and have just graduated with a first and am working full time, but I really wish I'd taken a gap year before going because now there's so much pressure to get a job and be earning money, like you said. The advice I'd give you is really take your time, there will always be the opportunity for you to succeed at your studies, but travelling and not having long-term plans won't always be convenient. Being young and not having anything tying you down is SUCH a privilege so make the most of it!!! I also know loads of people from Oxford who applied and then asked to defer when they already had a place - if they like you, they'll wait a year for you. :)

    • @UnJadedJade
      @UnJadedJade  7 ปีที่แล้ว

THIS IS THE MOST AMAZING ADVICE.
      Harriet.
I appreciate this more than you know. Thank you for your insight and for affirming a lot of what my heart has been urging me towards 💛 the last day or two (after having made this video!), I've been desperately leaning towards wanting to defer, and with such limited time to apply, I've been struggling with what to do! I appreciate this so much!! Lots of love xx

Aww you're welcome! I just thought I'd tell you what I thought because, from how you come across in this video, it sounds like you already know what you want to do in your heart. Also on the subject of the 'elitist' thing, I went to a state comp and Oxford has been the most amazing, open, inspiring experience of my life so far so don't let that put you off!! Best of luck with everything - do what makes you happy

Ah this was so refreshing as a break between working! I'm applying for 2018 entry and have been to sooo many open days! Ugh there is just so much to do; A2, AS recap, UCAS, driving (which i recently started too), sports, social, trying to juggle part time jobs! Your relateable videos seem to be a little but of solitude in my week for taking time out and seeing someone in the same boat - i love them

Aww love you so much Jade! I loved this video so much! I've just started Year 10 and I chose Spanish, history, geography and triple science. I'm finding that there is sooooo much content and I have to do so much extra work at home. Your voice always reminds me to take a break and chill out when I work! I'm currently doing Silver DofE and working extremely hard but it always pays off :) Thank you so much for helping me through these tough times! I also believe that you will 100% get into Oxford and if not- WHY DOES IT MATTER!!?!?!? I wish you all my luck in writing your personal statement and make sure to always fit in a few chill out days a month! byeeeeee XXXXX

Jade, I would definitely encourage you to travel next year. I felt the same pressure as you to go straight to uni and it was a source of frustration for years after when I couldn't find the time to go. Ten years later I finally did it and it was incredible! A collection of the most valuable experiences of my life. You'll learn so much about yourself that it will help direct your decisions for the next few years at least, if not the rest of your life. My advise would be to go now! Uni will always be there, especially if you get great results in your exams, they will bite your hand off. Travel for yourself, see the beautiful world, meet some incredible people... It is the best learning experience next to starting a business or family. You will be challenged, scared, lonely, exhilarated and you'll come back an even better version of yourself. Have I sold it yet?? 😄 Happy to advise if you have any questions but have a look at the travel vloggers on here- they were the final push I needed 😊

Recently I’ve re-discovered that gap year is an option, I did my research and thought that it was a great idea. After 12-13 years of school what’s so bad if you take a years break, travel, volunteer in a different country, experience culture, find new hobbies. If anything it might help you decide on the career you really want to pursue, to me I see it like a breath of fresh air hahah.
Definitely look it to it! At the end of the day, it’s not like moving from pre-school to secondary school or secondary to highschool. There is no rush

I'm in the same year as you and I think that a gap year will be so good for just taking time out, getting to have more experience and so on. Especially with what you want to do, conservation, there are so many gap year programmes (like Bunac) where you can scuba dive and conserve different wildlife's. It looks really fun. But good luck with whatever you decide!

Ugh same gal, school is so stressful ❤ I'm in 5th year and so I'm picking my A Levels this year. Thing is, you go from still having to put up your hand to go to the toilet to then being told to pick subjects which will define your career, perhaps for the rest of your life: that's CRAZY!! If you need a year off, take it. 100%. ❤❤ Just do what makes you happy at this point, be yourself and just follow your gut instinct ❤❤ you got this gal, all love from the Northern Irish one xxx

I'm slightly late but I'm also in the personal statement struggle! I'm applying for Sport and Exercise Sciences so Oxbridge isn't really an option but I am applying to Loughborough which is one of the countries best sports university. I did have a little break down earlier last week as it all kind of just hit me if that makes sense? Seems silly I know but it all kind of just hit. Whenever I watch you I feel so inspired that I'm not the only one as year 13 can feel so lonely sometimes. As I'm watching you now I'm currently trying to fix my final draft together! But we will all get through it together! Stay strong, beautiful and amazing Jade! Your such an inspiration!xxxxxx

Hi Jade, I absolutely feel you with the gap year and school "pressuring" you to go straight to university if you get good grades. I finished school this year and applied to university to study medicine. But while I was waiting for the universities to reply I realised that I don't want to start doing the whole "university thing" right away. I just want to do something else. So I didn't take my place and decided to work in a hospital for a few months, travel a bit and start university next year. Here in Germany it's really difficult to get into medicin so when I told some people about my decision I felt like they all judged me a bit for "throwing" away my place at university but I have to say I feel so happy with the choice I made. I know it's difficult but you really need to find out for yourself what you want and I promise you it will be the right thing and there will be a time when you just know what you want to do. Good luck with everything and lots of love from Germany!😘

TAKE A GAP YEAR!!! I got 3 A*s at A Level and really burnt myself out. I then went straight to uni and regretted it so much, so I'm taking a gap year now between years 1 & 2 of uni, and it's completely changed my mind about university. I won't be going back. Follow YOUR intuition and your guts, it's your decision. I was brainwashed by parents and teachers to go to university because I had no other 'plan'. But now I live in Berlin, working for myself, and every day is a dream.

Loved this long video Jade! Good luck with your application too!I did my AS levels last year too in maths and the three sciences and I spent my summer doing med-related work experience and preparing my personal statement... However, at one point, I decided to go with studying in Sudan instead because I really want to connect with my roots more (I'm Sudanese). I'm going to be starting literally next week at Khartoum because in Sudan schools only go up to year 12 so it's just crazy to think how everything has changed in just a couple of months! As you said, wherever you end up is where you're supposed to be.

I took a gap year and it was the best decision. I was in the same situation as you that everyone assumed I'd do well and go to university. I worked, volunteered and travelled. Take a look at Quest Overseas, they are a charity based eco-tourism company. They do amazing gap year adventures that are not harmful to the environment or communities that you visit. I did the south America one and it was incredible. Good luck with whatever you decide.

This was such a sweet video, felt informal and personal.
I'm in the last year of high school as well, and going through the same stuff. I really like this biomedical course(again I really like bio, the exams not so much but I try) but I don't see myself working in any field related to biology. I feel like I'd enjoy working in PR but I don't find it 'academic' enough to study for undergrad. I have taken sciences for a long time so I don't feel confident about changing my subjects entirely. And of course I thought about taking a gap year Good thing I live in India, we hardly have to make any personal statements lol.
All the best for getting into Oxford and I hope you get past the confusion!

*watching your video while knitting and drinking tea... I'm such a grandma*
I can relate to your struggle so much! Last year I had to choose between taking a gap year or going to uni. Everyone expected me to go straight to uni, because I was also considered a 'clever kid'. I actually had a secret dream of taking a gap year, volunteering abroad and take my time to write and read about philosophy. Unfortunately I found out that I was too young to get visums for volunteering abroad; I'm still 17 :(. So, I'm in my first year of studying European Law now and although my time is scarce again, I do not regret it. I am planning on becoming a human rights activist and traveling the world after my studies though :)
Hope you'll find the right uni/gap year! (sorry for my English, I'm Dutch)

I was in your place exactly a year ago and after getting good grades everyone just assumed I was going straight to uni, and it is scary making that snap decision to click the defer button but I'd really really recommend it. A lot of people go straight to uni because it's too much effort and pressure to plan the whole year, but if you feel like you want to, do it. Especially if you've been working really hard constantly for the past 5 or however many years, you don't want to burn yourself out by taking on a hard-core uni degree, and you never know, you might come back and go to uni even more driven than you are now :))

  • @2403Amelie
    @2403Amelie 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

One advice: DO A GAP YEAR! I would definitely recommend doing one. After graduating high school, I went straight to university to study sociology and political science in my hometown (despite the fact that I wasn’t sure about it and that I had great marks, really). I’m starting my second year, and I HATE IT. Really, it’s a nightmare (depression, suicidal thoughts...). I’m realizing that I don’t know myself yet, and a gap year might have been a great way to spend some time to know what I wanted to do. I’m struck righ now, so if you’re not quite sure about what or where you want to study, a gap year might be a nice opportunity to discover what you’re meant to do.Good luck!

Oh Jade, Jade, Jade!! I wish I was still in my little cupboard in the Sixth Form block so you could pop in for a chat. Make sure you do the right thing for YOU - ignore the pressures from everyone else, do the right thing for you. It doesn't matter if you don't have your whole life planned out, life doesn't work like that anyway. Although a career in Biology doesn't just mean being tucked in a lab, soooo many options, things you will not have even heard of yet. I'm sure you did great with Joe - it's all about looking at how you analyse and can communicate, an Oxbridge course is very much focused on tutorials so this is key. Personal statement you're dead right, get the content down and then work out what you can take out or re-word to make it more short and 'punchy' and to bring it into the word count. If you're talking about your youtube channel make sure you say just how successful it is. Don't over think everything - just take it one step at a time and I'm sure you'll be fine. I'm having some technical issues but there are some videos and info on my Careers Queen channel and facebook page which might help you all or message me if you want an unbiased help/chat. Miss Green.

I had an oxford interview for medicine last year and I have to say it is unlike anything I've ever done in my entire life, the questions are strange but they do all have context, the one biggest tip I have is even if you don't know what the heck their asking you about just say something and articulate your ideas because I got too scared and nervous and didn't, the word BUT is your friend, good luck x

I feel you so much! I love entrepreneurship, I started uni by studying biochemistry which I love, but wouldn’t imagine myself doing forever. Because of that, I decided to change my course and now I’m doing optometry. It’s so weird to be interested in both science and business but I feel like through optometry I can combine the 2 by having my own optic store. I find it so hard to find people like you that think so much about their decisions in life and how to be the best we can as individuals and professionals. Thank you for being such an inspiration for so many people Jade ☺️ much love from Portugal 🇵🇹

Yay biological sciences! I'm doing my Master's in zoology, my project observes the effects of pesticides on the behaviour of an endemic NZ insect. It is a good idea to stay broad with studying general biology (my university doesn't offer that, although you can do double majors) but try to decide what you want to do relatively early in your Bachelor's degree so you can take papers which will be favoured for your later application. Good luck for your applications!

Do what feels right for you. Only you'll know what is right. So many people that I went to Uni with took a gap year ( I was the only one in a house of six that didn't!!) and it gave them so many life experiences+was right for them! Equally, I spent six weeks in Bali before third year so its all doable. It'll become clearer, honeybee. Trust your instincts. Let yourself grow. xxx

Hey there Jade.😀 Been watching your channel for a long time now. I did my leaving cert last year and did a UCAS application and got offers for all my universities. I can relate to your struggles with choosing your pathway as i struggled so much to pick a career path. 😓I submitted a CAO application also with both business and science courses listed to realise that my love was really for the science path but was scared of being trapped in a lab everyday! I can tell you on the day the offers came out i contemplated so much and chose to do a Pharmacy course for two years. I am now happier than ever having a balance between business and science.🎉👌🏼 Although my dream course was impossible for me to get into due to me not doing biology for my LC, i will be able to apply after my course. Can't wait to see what your next stage brings but what is for you won't pass you :) 🇮🇪

Hey Jade, I've watched a few d your videos and I think we are very similar! I graduated school last year with the highest possible result in my state (Australia) and this year I've taken a gap year. I received a scholarship to the university of my choice and direct entry into a bachelor of law and environmental science. I was always pressured to go straight to uni by teachers and family members. During school I had an extremely busy schedule (dancing, studying, working) and therefore I was always stressed and wasn't looking after my mental health. For this reason I needed to give myself time off to look after myself and do the things i want to do. This year I've travelled, relaxed, saved money and just worked on myself. I definitely think that it's a good idea for high achievers to have some time off. Good luck and keep on being vegan ❤️

I relate so much to this video! Next year is my last of high school, and I don’t think I’ll do a gap year before college because the school I want to go to has long (four month) summer vacation anyway, but I think I will do a pre-career or pre-grad school gap year. I’m very excited to see how your gap year goes and your transition afterwards!

TAKE A GAP YEAR IF YOU CAN. Everyone I know who was considering it and then didn't regrets it, it sets you up for uni so well if you go, and most of them don't seem to mind at all and/or prefer it (even oxbridge despite what my teachers told me in school!).

I somehow managed to get an Oxford offer to start in 2017, but then I emailed the college in February after deciding I wanted to take a gap year. Crazily enough, they did actually defer my offer! So there's always a chance you may be able to do that if you don't want to apply directly for deferred entry :)
P.S. I love this video because I had the exact same attitude and thoughts about all these things last year. Good luck with everything!

Have you considered Scottish universities? I'm in my 2nd year at Edinburgh and it's amazing, plus the city is stunning. You also get the flexibility in the first two years whereby you can change your degree to any outside options you choose in 1st and 2nd year (you get 120 credits per year to 'spend' on any course which fits into the timetable with your chosen degree).
If you're stressing about your statement for Oxford, I applied to Oxford and they said that the personal statement was extremely secondary to your grades and how you performed at interview. The statement might make a difference if your grades were on the borderline, but yours aren't so don't stress.
That being said, I was THAT close to taking a gap year - but I decided not to because at Edinburgh there is the option to go abroad in 3rd year, and I wanted the different cultural experience more than travelling and tourist type things. So if you're on the fence about this then a possible year abroad is an option.
Hope this was somewhat helpful - and as for the Oxford interviews should you decide to go, it's not too stressful. Certainly in my experience the tutors at Lady Margaret Hall helped make me feel at ease (especially when I forgot the formula for hydrochloric acid...that was a brain fart lol)
