I've seen a work colleague's daughter grow up under her parents ethos of "She's a princess who can do no wrong". The father even bullied one of her teachers at primary school (a small woman) who tried to get the daughter to understand she wasn't the center of the universe. Now that daughter is 30 something and a total horror movie of a person. I'm sure this story is repeated many times.
Absolutely - I worked in school management - so I had a bird's eye view. The cane was rarely if ever used. But watching a boy standing in the Deputy's office after doing something despicable - and the Deputy stands up, reaches behind the door for the CANE - placing it on the desk, changes the demeanor of the students. 99.9% walk out not having been caned - but they won't be back again. The day the cane was banned - same scenario - except "go to the timeout room". Student laughs "I won, got out of History Class AGAIN". Schools changed instantly - because of a Woke Dream that discipline was unkind - now those spoiled children are adults - stealing cars, driving without licences, doing drugs - and "enjoying" destroyed lives.

I work in a high school in Qld and there’s no discipline whatsoever. Principals and their deputies are afraid of parents. The executive leadership team don’t confront kids and the poor behaviour of students is just walked past and avoided at all costs. I’ve heard that word has come from the higher ups there are to be no suspensions and exclusions in schools. So kids just ignore the school rules and it’s becoming more and more wild wild out there and the poor teachers are on the front lines, stuck in the middle of a battle ground with no support. The gov bangs on about mental health and suggest teachers use a mindfulness meditation app, but I know what would really improve their mental health and that’s knowing that the school they are working in has actual enforceable rules. This problem is just another example of Qld being a lawless state. Sorry; it does have laws - it just doesn’t enforce any of them and exacerbating the issue is that more and more people are cluing in on this fact - that Qld is lawless - and are now breaking laws because there is no punishment.
You are so spot on! I am a retired teacher of 39 years. If teachers greeted a class of well behaved students, they could engage the class in creative, inquiry based learning. My career began that way and as parent and administrative support subsided, I was forced to lessen academic standards and stifle a code of conduct that used to allow me to push students to reach higher levels of achievement. Student behavior in the classroom reflects parenting at home and that reflects the classroom atmosphere.
The State are the childrens parent. Mothers and fathers have no choice but to work to feed, cloth and put a roof over their heads .. And when they fail to do that the State comes to appropriate the children .... projections for homelessness for this time next year show a rise of at least 100K
When a classroom of kid's see the ADHD or anti-social kids get special treatment for their 'differences', they all want it. It's hard to explain to a 5 year old why the violent kid gets to go to the playground to cool off when he's angry, but the rest of the kids have to stay and learn their ABC's. It's also always when the work comes out that the troubled children get triggered, funnily enough.
The problem with ADHD + AUTISM etc is it is overly diagnosed. 90 % of kids are not on the spectrum. Parents want their kid to have a label so they can be lazy disciplinarians, so they can get NDIS, carers pension, aid, etc. I taught primary school from 1986 - 2012. There was ONE child in the entire time span, that I could say was "possibly" ADHD. However, I would not say conclusively that he was because I recognized that his diet made a difference to his behavior. Weekends was a case of soft drink, pizzas, maccas, candy, and going to bed when he wanted to - age 7 and then I taught him again when he was age 11. By age 11, grade 5, after a term, I managed to gain the parents trust to change their eating habits. What a difference it made to him and to their life. One of my friends at Christmas last year, was telling me they think their grandson is on the spectrum - autism . I know the child well. I asked what symptoms. She told me. I told her no, the child is simply a focused child, he is very intelligent, he is a literal thinker. If you explain something to him, he takes on board the words used, as opposed the gist of it all. If you say Tommy, stand over there. He needs to know precisely where over there is, not an arbitrary there, he needs a concentrated there place.
As someone who has worked in disability for 15 + years, nothing upsets me more than parents using the disability as an excuse for poor behaviour. The majority of kids I worked with were lovely. Parents sometimes need to accept that their kids are just entitled brats.
This goes on all round the world. Kids are wrapped in cotton wool and have no idea how the real world works. When will those parents realise they are doing their kids a disservice. The real world will tear their little prince and princess to pieces.
The truth of the matter is that the worsening behaviour of students is a combination of complex issues not addressed by the authorities in charge. You cannot increase the demands placed on front line teachers and wonder why so many are leaving the profession from burn out and abuse from parents and the media/society. Students need full time counselling to deal with the myriad of issues they are now presenting with at school. You cannot expect mainstream classrooms to accommodate every single need of special education students, there isn’t the time and there isn’t the resources, but more importantly than that is the evidence that these students need an environment that is not mainstream. Student behaviour is getting worse? Of course it is when there isn’t the appropriate consequences for these students. Bring back suspensions and expulsions and they will realise that they have to conform to society’s standards. If they aren’t learning it at school, then when and how will they learn it?
As a former teacher with 35 years dedication, I’ve seen schools become social engineering factories turning out students that are ill-equipped for both the workplace and society.
I’m a teacher in a college. It helps that I’m 6’3” and 200 lbs. But students will try to get away with everything, if they could. I use humor as much as I can, but I don’t let my students get their own way. My height and weight are what dissuade my students from taking over the class.
Isolation cubicles are far more effective. Most naughty kids are attention seekers. Isolation is the exact opposite of what they are seeking. At that point, then the welfare side can come in and find out what's wrong with the kid. Is it family background, ADHD, physical, whatever it is. But not before isolation, AFTER.

It's an embedded problem. You can't challenge kids to push themselves without an underlying framework of discipline. When teachers have their disciplinary powers stripped from them, and aren't trusted or believed (eg having to get a kid to write a witness statement that corroborates a teacher's version of events of a classroom incident because the teacher's word automatically is not believed), then obviously teachers that fear reprimanding and disciplining of themselves or issues with parents are going to elect for mickey mouse, pacifying lessons that don't challenge or disrupt patterns of thinking. And because the emphasis is on 'inclusion', then disruptive kids that run amok in class are not allowed to be isolated out of class because isolation is cruel, and they have to be included. That means they run amok in class while the good kids have to put up with it. And then they wonder 'oh I wonder why Australian education standards are tanking in comparison to worldwide benchmarks. It's because our teachers are no good. Let's force them to do more irrelevant 'professional learning' and make them fill out more forms'. 😅
Stop blaming the teachers! Get the parents to tell their children to stop being show offs, stop calling out in class, and all the other deliberate attention seeking behaviours. Either behave in the classroom, be quiet and let other classmate’s learn in a calm classroom, or sit out in a detention room for their terrible behaviour. I know I am a teacher! The behaviour by some students is appalling. No more excuses from parents 🇦🇺
What's wrong with parents disciplining their children? If the child plays up, it was The parent's duty to discipline their children. That was until 1995 when Australia ratified a U.N Convention that outlawed basic parental discipline including the right for parents to use corporal punishment if it was needed. Teachers are just bureaucrats, commisars who really don't have the best interests of the child in mind. What PM is effectively telling you is that your child is the property of the state and corporation.

Again, great video! Is having students start school so EARLY (like age 2 or 3) leading to boredom which in turn leads to discipline issues? In Finland, the best educational system in the world, the students do not start until Grade 1! Thank you again. James
Too much union interference in Australian government schools. Thet still maintain a system of permanent and contracted staff. You can just imagine the atmosphere in this workplace. Get the basics in place first, before attempting the impossible!
There is also so called " qualified teachers" who are unable to pass the year 10 basic exam. They are " illiterate "... So how can that be when they have University degrees ? .. Australia hasn't got a single University ranked in the top 100 in the word.... ( Mickey Mouse Land).. ..

When I was at school in the 70/80 we had the upmost respect for teachers and adults. This is now gone. No discipline anymore.
💯!
Things began to head south, after the cane/tawse was removed from teacher's hand.
Totally agree. I got the strap, chalk and blackboard dusters thrown at me etc. Made me a better respectful member of society.
It's not the children that are the problems. It's the government and the parents that are responsible.

To much demand from teachers. Poor parenting in some cases.
Bring back the cane as a deterrent or punishment.

"If you can't control them, you can't teach them" (advice to me on my first day of teaching).
Parents are to be blamed

We used to have a special class for the students who needed special treatment so not to disturb the regular students

All good and well but, kids report teacher who is then guilty until deemed innocent and the kids have the help line to report parents.
