    My mother inherited her great-grandmother's hexagonal quilt, which was made from old cotton ties and boxer shorts. I'm a block quilter and was always fascinated at how these quilts are pieced together. I would stare at the pieces trying to reverse engineer those beautiful corners!
    In America, this is type of quilting is out of vogue, so I could never find a book in any library craft section with instructions. I didn't even know what this type of quilting was called until I stumbled upon this video today!
    I'm so grateful to you for creating this video. I'm so grateful to finally know how to do this. But, at the same time, it's a bitter sweet moment, because I mourn over all the EPP quilts I could've made over the last 25 years.

  • @kathyn3978
    @kathyn3978 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am just starting a hexagon quilt. I have lots of scraps from all the masks I’ve made in the last few months and when I need more, I’ll look for a jelly roll that’s already 2-1/2” wide. I’m also using squares like you (lot less cutting) but my basting is not going through the paper and it’s holding very well. And I love that you’re not using glue. Thank you for sharing your techniques and I can’t wait to see how to finish a quilt like this!❤️

    Squeak. You have made me want to make a quilt! I love your scrappy ones and especially the random nature. Yay you! Also marvellous because I share your need to use ALL the fabric! I take my small unuseable scraps to our charity shops, who sell them as rags, I think they end up as insulation. So absolutely none of my fabric goes in the bin. Some of my nicer scraps I give to my daughters school for the kids art projects. Thank you for this, I may start my first quilt on our family holiday!

    What was the most fun about watching/learning you EPP technique was the sparkle in your eyes about how much you enjoyed making the hexagons/quilts! How wonderful to make a beautiful quilt from scraps. From what I can see, you likely put batting (I think you call it wadding) and a backing fabric and tied the quilt in intervals to hold it together rather than quilting it on a long arm machine. BTW - I just LOVED to see your interview on That Sewing Blab. Love your videos. Go ahead - keep inspiring me!

    I loved your tutorial. Very clear explanation. I save the light pieces of cardboard that stockings come wrapped around to make paper pieces. You can buy hexagon/ pentagon/ square/ triangle... Templates online. To hold the fabric while your sewing you can also use little "sew tite magnets" on Amazon too. Please let Macy's be on camera! Fluffy babies are wonderful !❤️

    Well that was just fabulous. TBH I have not had the enthusiasm for quilting as I much prefer to wear my sewing, but this was exciting to see and I am now conflicted as to whether I sit by son's bedside for 7 days in hospital next week knitting a cardy (my new found hobby for chillaxing on the sofa in front of tv) or whether I now be the obsessed lady cutting little hexagons out and wrapping them up in fabric as I have a couple of big bags of scrap fabric that I had no idea what to do with and chucking them in the bin seemed so sacreligeous, obviously I was waiting for this video! Thanks ladies for this visit into quiltmania.

    Wow, these are beautiful, I'm in awe of your patience too! I also quilted prior to garment sewing but I went the machine way. I always loved handsewing the binding on however and did find hand sewing very relaxing. I know what you mean about wanting to do something with all the scraps which are generated from sewing clothes, when I first started sewing clothes I felt horrified about how not every last piece of fabric is used!

    I got back into sewing via quilting when I lived in Saudi and loved it - still do 😁 although not tried paper piecing.....yet. I haven't mastered machine quilting either so all of mine are hand quilted which takes time but I love the finished look of them. Really enjoyed this vlog and it's so lovely to see how enthusiastic and supportive you are of each other. So glad I'm not the only one that keeps practically every scrap of fabric 👍🤗🤗

    When do you take out the other papers, not just the middle one?

    • @StitchSisters
      @StitchSisters  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can do it as you start to sew your flowers together. I usually sew a few together then take out all the papers at once. You should always leave the papers in the hexies around the edge.

    Thank you so much for this video!!
    I got into sewing a year or so ago and have quilted two tops by machine. I’m plucking up the courage to try FMQ on them.
    I only tried dress making this year after finding Tilly and the buttons patterns in John Lewis.
    Think I’ll give EPP a second go after watching your video as the basting stitch looks easier than I ever imagined

    The grandmother's flower garden usually has one round of background fabric around the flowers. During the early part 9h the 1940's I was old enough to remember and too young for school and I played under the quilting frame while my grandmother quilted. I learned a lot during that time but I have only made one quilt and it was done on an overlooked and machine quilted. It was a larger baby quilt for a granddaughter who was expecting her first child.
