I learnt this sixty years ago, in England with my grandmother, just after the second world war, we used metal templates to cut the papers, old envelopes, or any stiff paper we could lay our hands on, we used every scrap of cloth ,or recycled clothes. We stitch through the papers , enough to secure the fabric however small to the paper, the papers were reused several times, untill they lost their stiffness. Tacking threads were pulled out ,and also reused .squares, diamonds, octogons ,hexagons, triangles, and coffins, were all used.
Happy Friday everyone. 🍁🍂Happy to share the first of a series on slow sewing. English paper piecing has given me so much joy over the years. I hope you find the same. Happy Thanksgiving for my fellow Canadians
Loved your techniques, I'm going have to try using single thread instead of double, and smaller needles. Think you said milliners #10. Gotta look thru my stuff to see if I have any. Thank you again for all of your time and expertise. I always learn something from you. ❤❤
Small tip on cotton thread if that's what you have laying around, you can run it over bar soap or beeswax and that makes a big difference in hand sewing. That's what my grandmother taught me when learning to do hand binding.
ABSOLUTELY. I like beeswax. It makes the thread stronger and I find the thread tangles less. Thread Magic, which is fabulous, seems not to be manufactured any longer. I love the chapstick idea and will try it.
I learned the same thing, but from my Mom. She never made Quilts but she made all my clothes when I was at home. She always wanted to know how to Quilt. I have felt I missed out on a lot, not knowing how to Quilt. I love what I have been learning, while I've been Quilting. I can't imagine doing anything else.
Like many here I mainly piece with a machine, but I love having my project box for EPP for long car trips, sitting at my MIL’s (need to be conversational but not idle😜), staying awake during commercials and replays on televised sporting events, watching grandkids and sew on….On a 6 week car trip I stopped at quilt shops to buy more fat quarters and used hotel irons, keeping my project box with finished rosettes under the car seat. Made enough for a queen sized quilt!
Thank you for breaking this down into simple steps and taking all the mystery out of it, Karen. I would like to see a similar video on foundation paper piecing. I've tried it and wasn't happy with the results. You have such a gift for explaining techniques and making them feel like they're do-able. My piecing has drastically improved after following your 3-step advice, especially on HSTs. My quilts are square without surgery!
I recently discovered that I prefer hand (slow) sewing to machine sewing, and always wondered what paper piecing was. Thank you for your explanations and tutorials! I’m also loving the videos with the timers, the clutter challenges, and you vlog! I have ADHD, non-hyperactive, so I have a tendency to get distracted, lose interest, or forget completely what I was doing, and you have so many tips I’m using! On the other hand, I can also get so engrossed in a project I lose track of time. Just got the cube timers today! Thanks again!
YES!!!!!!! Please do a video on FPP!!!! I can’t cut or sew a straight line to save my life but I’m pretty good at FPP; it’s my saving grace. I look for every quilt block in the form of an FPP block. LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Jenny Doan say's she is all about the machine & so am I! I'm too impatient for hand stitching. That piece you were showing at the end that looks like a kaleidoscope is truly beautiful. But with every hand stitch I take, my mind keep saying, I'm getting older by the second on repeat. I'll leave the EPP to the intermediate quilters & admire their work with awe.
My daughter gifted a cute little tin with Wonder clips for Christmas one year. Such a finger saver! No more tight gripping!! I used my ScanNCut to cut several hundred of the paper hexies, and cut my scraps into 2 1/2" squares to wrap around the hexie papers.I don't trim. Works for me! I like the machine quilting over rows of hexies. I also like the big stitch quilting between the hexies. I will try different methods on different projects. I'm arranging them in diamond shaped arrangements, some with 4 (2 contrasting colors) and some with 9 with a contrasting center hexie.. Thanks for these tips, Karen!
Karen, I’m do happy to have found this! I’m a quilt addict and will be having foot surgery next Tuesday! No weight bearing for six weeks! YIKES! I’m worried about losing my mind sitting around. This just might be the answer! Thanks!
Long overdue answer to probably long solved problem - zip cord your sewing peddle to your table leg at knee height! Commercial Sewing Machines are made with a knee knocker sewing pedal because that type of repetitive strain on the foot is ridiculous when your sweatshop sewing is your day job! I had ankle surgery on my dominant foot and had to train myself to a knee knocker position to get anything done during those horrible weeks of recovery! Nowadays whenever my foot or ankle is straining I put my sewing pedal back on the table leg and knee knock it! Cheers
Hi Karen. If, like me, you lack the confidence to jump into quiltmaking, EPP is ideal. Also, the slow, regular & repetitive stitching is SO therapeutic. I hope one day to start doing a machine quilt but for the moment I'm totally hooked on EPP. P.S I'd love for you to do a video on FPP. Merci from France xxxx
Those is the most down-to-earth, no-BS EPP tutorial. It's like a tutorial "for the rest of us." Thank you! I feel like I could go start experimenting now.
I purchased an adorable Liberty of London EPP starter kit on ETSY which came with the fabric already cut out into Hexes. After making a Hexie pillow, I purchased a Walkabout The Stars wall-hanging kit. This came with charm squares and hard plastic templates so I have to lay out how I want the quilt to look and cut out all the fabric. I decided to look at some TH-cams to make sure I knew what I was getting into. Thank you, as always, for breaking things down into bite size pieces!
Bonjour, Je suis française et il n’y a pas de tutos de EPP en français. Grâce à vous, j’ai pu comprendre beaucoup de choses et de techniques. Merci beaucoup. 🥰😘
Excellent video! I started an EPP quilt because we were driving a lot to my granddaughter's basketball games at different colleges. It is a great way to spend time that would otherwise be wasted.
I made a grandmother's flower garden quilt (full-sized) and it took me years, but I'm proud of it. I'd never make another one, so I use this method for coasters (to give to members of my Bible study class at Christmas). I'm also working on a table runner using hexagons, and it's work, but nothing like the bed quilt was. I really love English paper piecing!
So I thought why not give EPP a whirl. Now I am totally hooked. Luckily I have so much material I do not have to purchase any more. This will be my way to play with my fabric and now it will be what I take on my future trips
Several years ago at my guild someone made hexes out of thin plastic, like the lids of butter in a tub, or some template plastic.. Then punching a hole In the center to easily remove. You could use them for a long time
Terrific tutorial, I started making Hexies and I love it.....and I have been noticing the container of hexies that you often have in the background of your videos...A big yes for FPP tutorials.
Karen, I would love a part 2 on how to finish EPP projects. How do you finish the edges? How to attach EPP appliqués? I have a table runner made, with hexies and that have no half hexies, but I am at a loss on how to finish it.
KAREN! I don't need more projects, but you are tempting me with EPP, simply because I love the pattern choices! Especially the quilt you have been working on for what did you say? 3 years? JEEZ! You must have some stamina!
Oh, Karen, Karen - another example of your WONDERFUL way of easing our hesitancy when contemplating just getting out there and doing something new! I've long wanted to get going on an EPP project. Today, watching your video, I am emboldened to just GET IT DONE! Thank you, once again, for your encouragement and excellent tips! Love from South Dakota!
Thank you for explaining in such detail and all the different options! I'm new to quilting and this is perfect to get started, your videos are all so helpful for those of us who don't have quilters in the family to show us how
I use a die cut with my fabric to cut exact shapes plus a die cut to cut out the smaller paper template. I use a Big Shot and it works great. I like not going through the paper most of all when attaching fabric to paper. Plan to start using bright old thread for attaching paper and a better thread for attaching fabric to another piece together. Thanks
Great explaination! I started my project before your video. Wish i had seen it before I started. I figured it out pretty well though.. Another option for templates. I used my Cricut machine! Worked like a charm for customizing to the size I wanted..and because I needed over 250 for the project the template cutting was fast and accurate.
Yay for EPP! I'm part of a La Passacaglia (Millefiori) BOM; it's the first time I'm doing more than a pincushion in EPP and I'm learning a LOT. Thread color *can* matter, if you're absolutely determined that your stitches not show. Match the thread to the darker piece, if you can, and the lighter if you can't. Tula Pink has several great videos on EPP on her channel for more detailed info. Thank you for this video, it's a great intro to EPP!
Wow! Your inspirational, Karen. Thank for making impossible sewing styles appear achievable. Somehow your tutorial seems to be talking.with me. I am certainly going to enjoy exploring fabric patchwork projects or should I say project. Fabulous sharing. I am enjoying early evening craft TH-cam exploring. Peace and kindness with prayers. 👌☕
Years ago I started cutting out a hexagon from each fabric I used in a project, but was not sure what to do next. Your video has really helped me to know how to proceed. Thank you!
Thanks Karen for another very informative video. When I learnt many years ago we tacked through the cardboard all the way round. This tacking is much easier. Hexagons and baby blocks are my usual shapes. Time to do some others. Love your large rosettes and must start another slow project like this. FPP has always left me troubled with sewing on the back of paper and most look like they needed a good press. Would love to see your video to make it all worthwhile. ❤🇦🇺
I like big stitches & big blocks & I cannot lie! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 EPP & FPP quilts are gorgeous! I just have too many things on my list to make so I have to do it big & fast ( as fast as I can move at this age) ! Thanks for your great videos!
I do EPP. You method is more complicated than I am used to. I do not back stitch when wrapping the fabric on the paperstock. I go up and down an that way there is always a stich going over the folds in the corner. This fixes the fabric and the corners. Always fold the same way around that way that fabric corners on anything that is not 90 degrees. This makes for less bulkiness when many corners meet like in stars. Yes using thread scraps is fantastic. But contrasting colours make removing them some much easier. I use neon thread for wrapping and paper clips to hold the fabric in place while sewing the fabric to the paper. I like the whip stitch but I do not sew with so many stitches per inch. I only do EPP I have about 2mm between stitch. But I loved the quilters knot. Thank you. Brilliant technique.
I love all of your videos! This one on EPP was excellent because of the way that you organized and presented the tutorial. Your examples and illustrations enhanced the presentation. I would love to you to tackle and create a similar one for FPP.
YESSSSS to the FPP videos and THANK YOU for the beginner EPP vid❤️. I got a sampler as a gift during a shop hop trip. I played with it on the bus on the ride home and I was hooked😂
Now you've done it. I'm having surgery on the 3rd and just laid out the quilt for my husband so I can work on it while I recover. This is going to be so cool!
Love the quilt behind you 🥰 Have you done a video to demonstrate how you made it? This is a great explanation of EPP. Thanks for taking the time to make your wonderful videos 🇬🇧
Seriously amazing video! I wish I had found this a month ago when I was getting ready for my first project. You’ve literally covered everything and filled in some missing pieces! Thank you
Hello from England. I have wanted to do an EPP quilt for a long time using Liberty Lawn. Your videos really inspire me and you explain things so well. I am still procrastinating over design as the shapes are more complex in how they fit together and what sizes they need to be.
Hi Karen, this tutorial is very interesting. I'd like to learn the FPP technique, if you make a video about it, I'd really appreciate it. Big hugs from Italy
An important note for first time thimble users: Thimbles come in different sizes. Place the thimble on your finger and shake your hand around, if it flies off it's too big. If you have use a thimble before and hated it, it probably was not the right size!
Thank you for inspiring me to take on more challenging EPP projects. I like to use Decobob thread for hand stitching, it glides through fabric so well with little tangling and is quite strong.
I would love to know more about FPP….what method would be appropriate for a Mariner’s Compass? About 30 years ago I saw the Mariners compass and I was quite intimidated by it. I started my quilting journey and at this point in time I feel as though I can tackle it. Thank you for your help and for your tutorials, I enjoy them so much!!
I love watching these come together. Unfortunately with my severe carpal tunnel and numbness in my fingertips, these will have to be admired rather than made by me. Look so beautiful!!!
I was having a terrible time with my carpal tunnel… was considering surgery but was recommended I try the brace at night. I am sooo happy I did! Now I can‘t fall asleep till I have it on and have my hand back!
I learnt to do it watching the children's program Blue Peter in England about 60 years ago. Still enjoying using up my scraps
I was shown how to do it at primary school in the early 80's.
Yes Karen, I'd love to see a tutorial how to learn FPP.
Happy Friday everyone. 🍁🍂Happy to share the first of a series on slow sewing. English paper piecing has given me so much joy over the years. I hope you find the same. Happy Thanksgiving for my fellow Canadians

Thank you again for all of your time and expertise. I always learn something from you. ❤❤
I love epp. I learned to use a small hole punch to put a hole in center of small shapes, this makes it easy to use a tool to pop out the paper.
I do the same! Works so well💜
Thanks for the tip I'm going to try that!
Thanks. Watching a demo of how to is good.
Great tip!
Wow that is a great idea, thank you
Small tip on cotton thread if that's what you have laying around, you can run it over bar soap or beeswax and that makes a big difference in hand sewing. That's what my grandmother taught me when learning to do hand binding.
I love thread magic for this too!
Awesome! I also hand sew and often get knots in my threads and it really annoys me. 👍🏻
I run it through chapstick.
ABSOLUTELY. I like beeswax. It makes the thread stronger and I find the thread tangles less. Thread Magic, which is fabulous, seems not to be manufactured any longer. I love the chapstick idea and will try it.

I'm in the middle of my 1st EPP project, a Tula Nova quilt that I'm doing as a color wheel. So I didn't quite follow your advise to start small :)
I didn’t follow that advice either. The joys of looking backwards
As you can see from my picture, I love EPP! Thank you for your video with tips and tricks! I can't wait to see a FPP video!!!
An important note for first time thimble users: Thimbles come in different sizes. Place the thimble on your finger and shake your hand around, if it flies off it's too big. If you have use a thimble before and hated it, it probably was not the right size!
I definitely want to see a video on Foundation PP. Love your work.
Thank you for inspiring me to take on more challenging EPP projects. I like to use Decobob thread for hand stitching, it glides through fabric so well with little tangling and is quite strong.
Yes paper piecing is something on my list of new things to do. Fpd please. Thanks Karen. Love the tutorial.
Your videos are so well done, informative and fun! Thank you for doing such a wonderful job for us!!!
Happy 15th Birthday Missouri Star! Love you, your tutorials, shows, events and more. 🌸🩷🌸🩷🌸🩷🌸

I would love for you to do a video on foundation paper piecing. I really enjoy your teaching. Thank you
Your videos are sooooo helpful...I started EPP not too long ago and would LOVE a video on FPP. Thank you for all your AWESOME videos....
I love watching these come together. Unfortunately with my severe carpal tunnel and numbness in my fingertips, these will have to be admired rather than made by me. Look so beautiful!!!
Becky, have the surgery, it’s so worth it!
I was having a terrible time with my carpal tunnel… was considering surgery but was recommended I try the brace at night. I am sooo happy I did! Now I can‘t fall asleep till I have it on and have my hand back!
I had INSTANT relief with the surgery!!
My carpal tunnel disappeared with physical therapy and carpal tunnel exercises. It came from my neck.
Hello Karen. Thank you for the informative video. I would enjoy seeing some information on FPP as well. I look forward to all of your new videos.
Thank you for this video! I‘ve never tried this…but may. I love foundation paper piecing and would love to see how you do it!
