Thank you for taking the time to make this teaching video! The tips and tricks are great, using the needle minder is a fabulous idea and works very well!
I do have the small strong craft magnets. But what I have found works for me are the Wonder clips. They have a strong grip, and keep my hexies together perfectly.
Thank you for such concise instructions. This gives me courage to begin the task of learning EPP. I have my supplies already. As it will be raining for a few days this will be a good time to start.
Thank you so much, Jayne, for your very clear and precise explanations. Your voice is not only pleasing, you enunciate clearly and professionally. I have been binge watching all your hexi videos and loving them. Bobbie
That would depend on the size of the project I want to make. For example, I made a seat cover that has nine or ten in each row, whereas my temperature quilt has 24 per row.
Just got interested in doing paper piecing and loved your video. Subscribed and hope my journey will be fruitful. LOL Loved that you showed up close exactly where you were sewing. Saw other videos but the camera was so far away and angle was off. Great video. Will check out your channel with all your other videos. thanks.....
Hi. From Grandma Rose. Use a paper punch the old fashioned kind that makes a hole. Punch holes and every one of your papers. Then I use a crochet hook slip it in and pop it out. I thread baste my hexies just through the fabric and leave the stitching in to help the hexie lay flat as I quilt it. 😊
Sadly I didn't even realise you could get patterns. I've just added the 'flower' to the next 'flower' until it turns into a circle! I am only on my first big project though, so very much learner mode😜
When I realized more designs were possible it was like a light bulb went on for me. It’s helpful to think of it as a mosaic. Any design can be made with mosaic tiles. Same goes for hexagons!
Quilting has ALWAYS seemed so overwhelming to me. But this looks like so much fun. Would this work using denim fabric? I don’t have any pretty cottons like every EPP video I have seen but I have TUBS AND TUBS of denim that I kept because I really wanted to make a denim quilt. Thank you so much for these beautiful tutorials.
Denim fabric may be too thick for English paper piecing. However, please experiement! I think it would work as long as your template paper is on the thicker side, like cardstock. You may also need to use a bit more glue to hold the denim to the paper while basting. If you do try it, please let me know how it goes! I love the idea of denim EPP. :D
Wish I had have thought my huge 108x108 inch quilt through as you have. I started with hexie flower,. Then built it up from there. The flowers didn’t always fall together, so at the moment it is not square. I wonder what I could do to try and make it this way. Ie any guidelines. Do you have any suggestions at all. Hehe. Live and learn for sure. Ido have carpel tunnel and due to have it operated in in next week or two, so it is getting a bit heavy moving it about. I am left handed which doesn’t always help, your idea is really good I will do it this way next time. Thank you.
If you want to make it larger you could add single rows to the outside edge as I show in this video, until it's the size you want. You could also fill in areas using this same method.
@@MakerJayne thank you for the tip, yes I have been trying that, I will persevere. Hehe. Very enjoyable making it however. Look forward to watching more of your channel. A new watcher and subscriber. Thank you.
Thank you Jayne so much for your easy to follow tutorials. I have been doing Epp for a few years now, but using the needle minder will make it so much easier. Also what sort of needle do you use?
Hi Wendy! You’re welcome. I’m glad you enjoy my videos and teaching style. Thanks for letting me know! It’s an encouragement for me to keep going. 😁 Yes, the needleminder was a game changer for me, too. For needles, I’m using a John James Gold’n Glide Milliner size 11.
I'm so glad! I hope you'll try it. I think you might enjoy it! When I first started, I wasn't sure I would like all the hand sewing. But I ended up falling in love with the process. I use Aurifil 50wt cotton thread for my English paper piecing.
Is removing papers true for a large project such as a twin quilt? I heard removing before you're done compromises the shape and stretches the fabrics?!
I would remove the papers only as needed. With a larger project like a quilt, you may find that removing the papers makes for easier maneuverability of the project while you work on it.
I am making a 7ft x 7ft quilt with EPP. And the backing is hexiform not card, I am 14 rows up at the moment , there are 40 hexies in each row, it is getting very heavy, ang suggestions, I am also left handed. It’s surprising what being left handed makes a difference to how your showing me. All suggestions I would be very grateful for. I have never seen needle miners before. As I live in the Uk, you sound as if you make do not, otherwise I would buy one. From you.
That sounds like a wonderful quilt you are making. Yes, as EPP quilts grow they become heavier and more difficult to manage. Since you are using hexiform, it doesn't sound like you can remove the papers which would help reduce the weight. You may want to try using a pillow or table or something to help support the weight of the quilt while you work on it. Needle minders are available from some UK sellers on Etsy and Amazon. Hope these suggestions help! Best wishes. :D
@@MakerJayne thank you for your tips, very useful to know these things. I know one thing for sure , your definitely get aching shoulders hehe. So will have to look a couple of new ones out at the same time. Hehe. Happy sewing.
Thank you! This is my first time to sew rows of hexagons together. You made it clear and simple! 🌸💕❤️💕
You are so very welcome! I’m glad you enjoy the video. 😁
Never mind! I should have watched to whole video. In the next part you explained why the papers are important. You are a great teacher . Thank you !

Great idea. What’s the most hexies you would put in each row?
That would depend on the size of the project I want to make. For example, I made a seat cover that has nine or ten in each row, whereas my temperature quilt has 24 per row.

I know this is two years ago but I have used cross stitch pattern for my Hexie quilts. Each square is a Hexie. Lots of fun!

I take a photo with my phone after I decide what arrangement I want. That way I can make sure the row stays in the right order.
Great tip!
Hi, clicked link to purchase the round needle minder you use and nothing comes up. How can I purchase this one?
They are currently out of stock in my shop. I'll be making more in the near future and will get them reposted then. Thanks for checking! :D

Wow! I was scared of EPP. Your videos are so helpful. I think I can at least give it a try! Question: what kind of thread do you use for EPP?
I'm so glad! I hope you'll try it. I think you might enjoy it!
When I first started, I wasn't sure I would like all the hand sewing. But I ended up falling in love with the process.
I use Aurifil 50wt cotton thread for my English paper piecing.
Do you ever use the ladder stitch or the flat back method ?
I use the flat-back method when stitching curved pieces. I have never used the ladder stitch for EPP but I do use it for other types of sewing crafts.
How are you going to quilt it? Will you tie it, hand quilt or machine quilt? Thanks!
I decided to machine quilt it. You can see the whole project and how I finished it here >> th-cam.com/video/LmPxKsH-vl0/w-d-xo.html
@@MakerJayne thank you!! This was very helpful!
If you crease them you can press them flat again with your iron.
Great tip! Thanks for sharing.

I would remove the papers only as needed. With a larger project like a quilt, you may find that removing the papers makes for easier maneuverability of the project while you work on it.
There is now a wonderful product called Sew tites that are magnets specifically for EPP
I've seen those but haven't used them. Do you have experience with them? If so, how do you like them?
@@MakerJayne I have them and LOVE them for EPP-particularly the little round dots or heart shaped ones for EPP
I am fascinated with English Paper piecing but one question (and this shows that I am very new to this), are you sewing through the paper?
Great question! The goal is to NOT sew through the paper. However, sometimes the needle may catch a bit of the edge of the paper by accident.

What size needle do you use?
I use size 11 milliners needles.
Why don’t you take out the card stock when you sew the second seam? Instead of it having to bend .
I love paper piercing and now I’m working on a quilt. Scrape!
Fantastic! Enjoy. :D

Theres a lot of redundancies in here. I had to play it at 2X speed and fast forward. It would be helpful if it were more concise.

What needles do you use please?
My favorite needles are John James Gold'n Glide Milliners size 11
