Having lived through it at at the time, I've always considered The Cars to be one of the first bands of what became the 80s sound.
The cars were the Pioneers that made the 80s sound the way it did. They were fathers of progressive rock and one of the first to bring it into mainstream radio play.
not prog, pop rock. Prog was ten years earlier with YES , Floyd, Moody Blues, etc.

Just What I Needed is one of my fav Cars tunes. Saw them in San Diego back in the day. Andre putting the sound in the 80's would be right IMO. Their sound was very progressive for their time and influenced the music of the 80's along with other 70s bands.
You have to hear Moving in Stereo. It's groovy.

When we first heard this album we couldn't stop listening to it. Every song was new and music was moving in a different direction.
Great new wave rock band! Super talented Ric was an amazing song writer and a producer RIP Ric and Benjamin…their voices and music will live on forever 😊

The Cars were the beginning of Now Wave and a fabulous band. And one of the few with two lead singers that were both great.

Monster debut albums from the era, this one from the Cars, Boston from a couple years earlier and Van Halen at the same time. Huge albums because not only were they full of hits but they each introduced groundbreaking sounds.
The Cars were the early rush on progressive 80's music that followed after them -- Cheap Trick is another late 70's bands that started the popular trend of Prog rock -- my high school years were 78-80 and they were both huge
That's crazy talk even though the cars were an amazing band, they just basically mixed rock with the stuff that was going on at CBGB. Rush was from another planet. Concept Rock. There is no concept Rock to the Cars. They are just good music.
You have to listen to Heartbeat City and Touch and Go. And so many others. Pax.

in 1979 on, the school bus i rode had an finicky 8-track player and this was the only cassette that would play without being ruined by the player. It started at the same time every day, and played through for my ride, most of two times. You could yell where you were by what song and how many times you heard it. I started bicycling to school because I could sleep in, and when my sisters got on the bus, get up and ride to school and still beat the bus. Anyhow, even going a few years hearing that album every school day, it never got old.

I love you guys. You’re so cute together. This song is much more indicative of the cars early records unlike drive, which is much more indicative of the later records. Personally I like the earlier stuff better.

I saw them do this first album and they were a tight band the songs a little obscure but sounded great live
Yes, I saw them on their first major tour and only recognized a couple songs that were getting radio play at that time. The rest I was hearing future hits live for the first time and later recognizing them when they got radio play after release.

I see you have done some Bob Seeger but not his more famous pieces such as 'Night Moves" and "Like a Rock" . Why don't you give them a listen?
