Excellent, i had an 800xl back in the day and this game scared the ... out 12 of year old me. Good to know it did so in the best sound and graphics available !!
I cooked a lot of poor pilots by hitting the shield button too soon. Finally realized I could close my eyes so not to see the alien and waited for the knocking on the ship door.😅 Fun times! Fun game, played it for hours.
I love this game, it was one of my favorites (playing on my 800XL). Now the best version ever is the PC Version if you use them with VR Glasses. That´s so funny
Lucasfilm really knew how to push the Atari 800 machines, and really show them off. All their games were better on the Atari 800, than they were on any other platform, including the C64. There were also many companies working under the US Gold distributor, and they also know how to push the A8.
It's too bad that Atari screwed them over so much when they were trying to get started, because they then SHUNNED the Atari 8-bit after that. I think Jack Tramiel (owner of Atari at the time) really badly botched launching the coolest tech-demo/game on the system! This could have been a 1984 release!
I think we're just going to disagree on this a lot. I like the way the Atari 8-bit does sound significantly more than the C64, and games like Rescue on Fractalus really shows this. The C64 has a cooler sound chip for music though! Considering I've written music software for the Atari 8-bit to deal with its oddities, though, I like how much you can dink around with what it creates... but getting it in tune, ooof! The issue became how the C64 was way way more popular, so most games around 1984ish and later were made for it first and sound was not a focus for the people that ported to the Atari. Off the top of my head, other games where the sounds are better on the Atari 8-bit are: Aztec (See my JCG 003 - doesn't have great sound on either, TBH) Archon (See my JCG 010) Agent USA (See my JCG 014) Ball Blazer The Eidolon Anything with speech (such as Berzerk or Nadral)
This is so awesome!
Awesome. This was one of my favorite games back then. I still play it and Ballblazer once in a while.

Same for me, though I was 7 or so when I played it as a kid and literally fell out of my chair when it scared me the first time. Fun times!

Great comparison video. I agree with you the A8 version is the best, noticeably faster graphics than its main competition back in the day.

VR? I've got to try the new one out.

I can't remember another game where the A8 outshone the C64 in graphics and sound so massively.
