Great vid as usual Mark. I fitted the same diesel heater recently and it’s a game changer for those cold desert nights. Love the relaxed and unpretentious way you present the videos Guys. Keep ‘‘em coming. Cheers 👌
I got a portable diesel heater in July 2020. The portable buddy gas heater was great, but slightest breeze and it would blow out, pain in the ass. In winter camping i pop it on the vans outside table and just run pipes into the window, leave it tick over on low all night, uses bugger all amps from the battery ( plugged into the landcruiser rear anderson plug ). 23C all night in the van when its 1C outside, even the Kelpie here loves it :) Its also great when its chilly and pissing rain and you cant sit around the fire, i have it pumping on my feet/legs. uses about 200 ml an hour and a 5 litre tank on it gets a long way. the price was about $190 versus an install in the van of around 2 grand. works for me.
Yeh that’s definitely a great alternative, if ours doesnt cut it for warming the annexe as well we might look to do something similar. All in all this diesel heater works well, $220 and we fit it itself, winner winner. Dogs havent tried it yet, will see what they think of it soon
@@Ourwhittleadventure that price is mental isnt it!! hahah. I didnt have any where to really fit one myself, agonised over it, then saw a portable one and went yesss!! its not perfect by any means ( i am my own worst critic ) but a lot cheaper than getting the genny out and running the Ibis on heat.
Yeh i think what you have done is spot on given the circumstances. Theres a lot of extra things we would have if we had more space, payload and money 😅 Was just chatting to someone else about portable ones. Does yours help with condensation too
Hi we are close to embarking on our half lap. Where abouts did you get the screen annex but not an annex from. I like it! Just what I'm looking for at the moment.
Gday Mark. Great video again and we really enjoy them. Don’t want to put a dampener on things but you are aware that the batteries are 105 ah. Also whilst the batteries will more than likely survive either the agm charger they are not being used to their full potential. The majority of batteries can be dropped in as such but the get the best out of them both in capacity and number of cycles they should be looked after with a proper lithium profile. It great you have upgraded. It opens up more for you both. All the best and keep them coming
Hey mate, thanks for that, yeh am aware they are 105A/H each. Did some serious research before we did buy them. They do have their own inbuilt BMS to help with the cell balancing and i get the full 13.5V charged voltage so it meets the requirements set in their 3year warranty. So even though its not perfect, its definitely a good alternative for us, if i have any dramas il be sure to share and in a perfect world, it should be covered under the warranty 😅 Thanks for the comment though, i do love chatting and learning about the different options, if i had the coin behind me i would definitely change a few things in the power setup
@ourwhittleadventure Mark I got told it was drop and go as well and it worked fine and still does but I have just changed the charger over because the one I had for my AGM was a C-Tek 250SA which does not have a lithium profile. It has been pointed out to me by my auto sparkie Rodney that I need to need to get the C-Tek 250 SE as the SA had a desulfication cycle and Lithium batteries do not need or like this. He said in the short term it will work fine but over time the damage will become apparent. The I tech BMS does not remediate this issue is what he said
Yeh ok, good to know thanks. Don’t think im in a position to be changing my BMPro system any time soon so will so how we go. Hopefully i get the 3 years of warranty outnof them atleast. Thanks for taking the time to let me know
Thanks guys, yes love the new table top. Really changed the feel of the van, we had a lot of wooden furniture in the house so kind of made this feel a little mire like our old home
Hi Mark, really enjoy watching your videos and appreciate you & Clem sharing all your ideas. Did you have to buy the DO35 with handbrake lever and did it fit straight up? With the stone guard, we’re waiting an a new owl 21ft, has extended draw bar & tool box- I’m not sure what stone guard to order as I’m concerned the Jack and tool box will be in the way, do you have any ideas or thoughts. Cheers Martin
Hey mate, glad you enjoy the vids! Yes the DO-35 with handbrake was a direct bolt on, they fit it during a service. With regards to the stone guard, im not sure really. Might be worth seeing what others in the Road Owl Facebook group have done, ours isnt extended and we don’t have toolbox. I know the stone stomper is a very popular option!
@@Ourwhittleadventure That's great mate. I asked New Age Townsville about putting in Lithium Battery's and he said he doesn't recommend it. He was saying the lithium will run out of juice without much warning. The voltage drop is pretty quick. Have you had any problems like this.
Not yet, the batteries are covered by a 3 year warranty and the specs of my BMPro charger meet their warranty requirements so if i so encounter any issue il be sure to follow up. But so far they have worked exactly as i would expect
@@Ourwhittleadventure Sorry mate. What I mean is during normal use. Have you had the batteries drop out during normal use when of grid for a while. How long have you gone of grid for. Sorry about the confusion.
Oh right, nah not had an issue. We were offgrid for 5 weeks straight after install, then another 2 weeks a month later. Then another 6 weeks a week after that.
Another great episode. Love the new table you installed looks great! How good are diesel heaters! We love ours doesn't take much to get is nice and cosy 😁
Another great informative video. Where did you get your diesel heater and did you install it yourself? How do you have the inverter hooked up, what is it and what rating is it? I'm arguing with my partner about having one installed in our van - I want he doesn't for various reasons. Thanks again and looking forward to part 2 of the Gibb.
The diesel heater is from Aussieoutbackstores, thanks for reminding me il put it in the description. Yes fitted ourselves. Inverter just runs straight off the batteries not wired to the BMS at all. Its a powercon 3000W inverter
All we do is cover all the vents with cardboard and duct tape, it doesnt tend to last as once dust gets under it it never sticks again but we are quite fortunate with this van that we dont get too much dust anyway.
Thanks for great vids. we also have a 105 Land cruiser so enjoy your tips. Can you tell me which Power management system you have as I have a BMpro genius which is not lithium compatible but Itech world say their Lithium batteries will cope. my understanding is that they wont fully charge but the way to get total charge is to change the solar controller that is lithium compatible. what are your thoughts? thanks
We have the BMPlus35SR. According to the spec sheets of Itechworld the float charge voltage is 13.5V and i have a full battery reading of 13.7v so it appears to get a full charge. They have their own inbuilt BMS for cell balancing and im guessing to help with the lithium charging profile as well. So in my personal opinion, no they probably aren’t being used to their full potential. However i seem to get a full charge and it meets the standards set in their 3 year warranty, so if for whatever reason they do fail early, it should be covered under warranty. So far so good, you can call itechworld and ask to speak to the tech guys, it is what i did and they were really good to deal with and helped reassure me before we made the change
Great video guys. Where did you get your screened annexe from? We are about to head off for 4mths with our two kids and have considered one of these but given we will be moving frequently we weren’t sure if it would be worth the set and pack down time. Do you use it much when your moving every couple of days?
Hey guys its from RV warehouse in Brisbane. We did use it heaps in our first year of travel, any stop more then 2 days as it doesnt actually take that long to set up by myself. But now our little fella is a bit older we don’t tend to use it as often but we expect we will again soon as we will be slowing down a bit, longer stops etc
E We enjoyed the video thank you Mark. We are looking at purchasing an inverter for our van, which brand and size inverter are you using and would you recommend it?
Great video. Where did you get the diesel heater display cover from and as we are still waiting for our van, did you need a longer exhaust pipe to get it out of the side, if so how long? Thanks in advance
The cover is actually the mount i think, but i just stuck the display to the wall and used the mount as a cover instead. Where we installed it, it comes close to get it out the side, an extra 500mm would of done the trick but its in a decwnt spit where the outlet is

Cheers buddy! Appreciate it
This was great to see what you have done to your van. I’m really interested in the drop in lithium!
Definitely worth a look, works for us with the BMPlus35SR.
Complete game changer
BEWARE of "Drop in Lithium" batteries, go to a caravan battery installer to get "proper" advice, not the crap that manufacturers tell you....
Yeh i did a lot of my own research on these ones before i bought them and they seem to do as advertised so far without issue.
But yes always cautious

Suited our needs better then a traditional annexe
