Isley Reust is a photographer and filmmaker based in Isafjordur, Iceland. She relocated to one of the most remote towns in Iceland in 2018, after spending years working in the film industry in Los Angeles. She recalls feeling unfulfilled in her career, which led her to a new life in Iceland. Reust has both German and American citizenship, which allowed her to settle in Isafjordur with relative bureaucratic ease.
Isley’s fishing village is home to only about 2,600 residents. She spends her time guiding visitors through nature expeditions and documents the stunning beauty of the arctic landscape. She sat down with Bustle to explain what she enjoys the most about this remote life and how she hopes it changes in the future.

I spent 3 weeks in Iceland and half of that time in the Westfjords. Once I got there I couldn't make myself leave. You are living a dream. I'll never forget sitting by the water, completely alone watching whales feed in a bay. No traffic noise. Just the wind. Stunning county
I just visited and intend to move there. It's like living used to be 40 years ago. When is unknown, but I hope to move the pieces into place.
Anyway, the point of my reply was the incredible silence that I heard walking through the mountains. No birds, no motors/engines, just the wind. Perplexing, yet so amazingly satisfying and pure.
I feel this. I was so unhappy with my life in Boston and visited Finland numerous times and decided to figure out how to leave and now I've been living in Finland for 3 years.

I took a solo vacation to Iceland. It was so amazing. As a female, I never felt so safe as I did in Iceland. I'd love to live there.

Oh my God I worked in LA in the film industry got fed up move to a small little mountain town in Colorado never been happier. The remoteness and silence can be very magical at times

I too live in a small Colorado mountain town for the past 25 years and I love it here! The downside it has been discovered and now houses in town start at 500k. I’m fortunate to be a builder and own my house on a small acreage and being an introvert I don’t have to prove it to any naysayers.
So similar to me. Im from the UK and I'd wanted to move to Norway ever since I first vitsited it in 2009, and last October I finally moved to a small village in the arctic, about 100km south of Tromsø.
This is fantastic I'm from England and planning to live in Voss .
@@ianwalker4803 Good luck. I got out of the UK just in time before brexit hit. Now you will probably have to get a work visa. But I thoroughly recommend it if you can.

I heard that living in norway is very expensive.

Not many people over there have to help each other . Otherwise they have a hard time in surviving by themselves
I had a puncture on my van in Isafjordur and a man imerged from no where with a 4 foot crow bar and broke my wheel off for me. Then the puncture repair place re-opened to fix my tyre,
couldn't have been in need of help in a better place. Lovely people lovely place.

I lived in Westfjords as a child. I lived on a farm and going to Ísafjörður was like "going to the town". It was so much life and experience visiting there. My favorite place at that time was the toy store. I don't know if there is another store like that today. I miss the old toy and book stores that i don't see anymore today in down towns.
Imagine never having to hear bass coming from any cars ever again. 😌
For those familiar with Iceland only from the "Vikings" TV series, it's a revelation to see sunshine and lush green landscapes!
I'm from Iceland but I must say that I love the show Vikings. Floki is the best character 🤣

Iceland has always been one of my dream destinations.The landscapes are extremely breathtaking.The people are kind of living in a laidback way compared to other countries where there’s always a concept of being successful,strive harder,etc.

literally not a remote village, the largest town in the area and referred to as the "capital of the westfjords".
Actually, I DO live in Ísafjordur. Being born and raised there I simply belong, and always have. I have lived in other places, from Africa to Scotland - and even near the 'navel of the Universe' (Reykjavik). A mere 6 years ago I moved back home. CONTENT is the word that describes my current situation.

Always wanted to live in a place like Iceland. Only thing is I have no idea how I’d be able to support myself financially living in a remote place 😅
You can always live in a tiny village about an hour or so from the nearest town, then you can work in the city while still living in a place like this. For example you could live in Standal, Western Norway, and work in either Florø or Førde (about an hour’s drive), or you could live in Olden, Western Norway and work in Stryn (about 20 minutes by car).
Not all of Iceland is so remote. Reykjavík metro area has about 230.000 people.

@@reiffmeister9792 Yes, this always comes to mind. If a person day trades (like I do), then they could conceivably live in a place like this. I just gotta get better at it and bring in some REAL cash.
My grandmother lived there and I used to ski there every year. There is so much beauty on that whole North West (Vestfjardarkjalki) part of the country, it's kind of an island of it itself.
I travelled from Milan to Iceland with my car. One of the most interesting trip of my life. Driving and walking through Iceland is simply fantastic.
How did u get your car to the island?
@@eUK95 Smyril Line is a Faroese shipping company, linking the Faroe Islands with Denmark and Iceland
@@eUK95 Milan-Bergen, then ferry (Smyril) through Shetland, Faroe and finally Iceland. 54 hours on the ship.
The way back was directly Iceland-Denmark. This was in 2005... maybe now they changed round

Don`t see myself living in such a remote village for a longer period of time- but I would definitely like to visit Iceland as a tourist. I grew up in a small place myself, moved to Oslo at the age of 22 for studies. NO intention of going back in the near future. I guess I have become an urban person, I would be very easily bored down there now, few people around. At the same time, I am able to enjoy solitude and beautiful nature if I want to, as there are plenty of hiking opportunities in the vast woodlands north of the Oslo. So I would say that I need both the energy and the diversity of people in the city AND every now and then the solitude of going into the woods, whenever I have to "clear my mind".. Greetings from Oslo
If you can live with your mind in solitude..this is definitely the place to go..

I visited Iceland in 2016 and I miss this country so much.
A friend of mine lived in Iceland in the 80s, had a relationship and a child out there. Her partner died and she moved back to London with her son.
She said what she missed most about Iceland were the mountains she could see from her kitchen.

Isley get a board however wide you like and as long as your current countertop and use a milk crate on each side to prop it up giving you an extra shelf and two cubby holes to store things as well as making it a better height for you . This board could be placed below the table and even your refrigerator, if the wall plugs allow for this. :) Oh, yes, I did enjoy your video and will subscribe. Also, I like your advice about being passionate about moving, something right now that I am seriously considering doing.

Iceland is a fascinating, unique and beautiful country. I was obsessed with it growing up here in England and eventually visited in my early 20s. I would have moved there myself but the lack of trees and especially 24 hour darkness I would not cope with, I suffer with Seasonal Affective Disorder. Thank you for sharing this video, was great to watch
I'm Icelandic, and my roots are in the Westfjords. Even though I've never lived there myself, every time I go there, I wish I didn't have to leave. It's so beautiful and peaceful.

Years ago I saw some aviation videos about landing in Isafjordur and decided I was going to visit it one day. Well, this summer, I did! I took a cruise around Iceland. It’s a very beautiful and fascinating country and Isafjordur and the Westfjords are absolutely stunning. i suffer from SAD and I don’t think I could handle the darkness in winter, but it was wonderful to visit.

We, my sister, my middle son and I, went to Reykjavik in February 2020 - my birthday treat to myself and I absolutely loved it, had planned to go back this year but thanks COVID-19... so when I do return I’m heading for the western fjords and northern Island. Everyone was so helpful and kind, our Airbnb host was a dote, very helpful and made sure everyday that we were ok and enjoying our stay. If you get the opportunity to visit - take it, you won’t be disappointed 🇮🇪❤️ 🇮🇸
I was going to go July 2020....but Covid. 😔 I do plan to go this July 2021. I have both shots now. Iceland should be open soon to those with proof of both shots.

@@johnmca5643 It's closed to anyone who is not from a country within EES/EFTA or Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or the Vatican and February is on average around 0 degrees Celsius and about 4 hours of daylight
Looks like a great place to spend the June July and early August. Definitely wouldn’t wanna hang around in the winter though.
Iceland is one of my favourite places on earth. Although I do like my city life too. Maybe come for a visit?
