    When I was skating or rollerblading I used to have this problem even though my skates were the right fit. It turned out that I have hypermobility (worst in my ankles) and that my insteps/arches collapse and can't support my feet or weight (even though I'm only 60kg). I now have orthotic insoles (thick wedges that go under my insteps) and I don't have a problem.
    Your advice is great- it means that I can take extra precaution for my feet when buying skates! Thanks very much :)

    There are many more reasons for inward leaning ankles than just skates. Technique has a lot to do with it. Most people are afraid of getting on their outside edges when skating and feel more balanced with their ankles inward. To correct this, they need proper skating lessons from a qualified instructor. A good skater could use a pair of skates that are loose and too big and still manage not to skate on their ankles.

      Right? Can't blame everything on gear. I saw a video of Mirai Nagasu landing a triple sal in her bf's skates that were bigger than her own so...ofc gear matters, but technique seems to be the more common issue.

      i took couple years of figure skating lessons as a kid and had good hockey skates experience. But then I go ice skating for the first time in like 6+ years with hockey skates on, and the skates just buckle inwards like this! never once experienced this problem when i was younger, even during my first time skating, I would just try to "walk" forward with the figure skates with no problem with my ankles

    Another great tutorial Chris. I suffer from this issue. I am learning how to skate and bought a pair of Bauer XLS which I think are ideal for my novice level and the fact that I skate twice a week. When I was using rental skates I didn’t have this issue. I’ll try waxed laces and see if the issue goes away. But it might also be the very last reason that you mention in your video.

    If you were from canada..
    you would know that the easiest way to keep your ankles strait is to tie your skates up as tight as they will go.. So your ankles don't move.. everyone knows If your ankles move in your skates they are too loose

    • @renhoek7531
      @renhoek7531 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Dude. Im from canada. I lace up tight on the bottom half and loose at the top. You lace em up to what you feel works for you. Haha its all about personal preference bud. I find lacing them up as tight as they go restricts my ankle movement and crossover ability leaving me flat footed and chasing instead of shutting shit down. That said. Its all trial and error until you find what works. Plus different skate brands....well....differ lol

    • @renhoek7531
      @renhoek7531 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      But i know what youre sayin tho. For begginers its best to just crank the fuck away on those laces until you learn how to skate. Then you adapt and change accordingly

    Good help! I just got my first pair of nice skates, I'm 19 and never learned how yet, but decided it was time. I think my main issue is that my ankles aren't used to the movement yet, so they are leaning in because of that. If I NEED to, I can bake this skate they said. But I think this clarified that I didn't buy the wrong size. Thank you!

  • @niklasorispaa5894

    If the skates turn to be right size - then I would recommend to check the alignment of the foot as a whole. The cause can also be flat foot or inadequate hip control . Knees turn inwards, which flattens the foot and results the whole weight to be resting on the inner side of the skate (and makes the whole skate lean inward). Proper physioteraphist can provide tips and training plans how to improve the hip control and fix the problem. As kids are sitting more and more (in front of consoles etc) there are more physical issues that are imapcting their capability to perform and execution different physical activities correctly.

    i deadass will never escape these bendy ankles but i don't wanna escape. i came to terms with my bending and make jokes about it. i can't escape the bending because my feet naturally turn very inwards so i have to force my feet to stay straight but my ankles are doing a whole other thing. i've made sure my skate are right for me and i know very well how to do them up because i go skating very often but they will always be that way. i'm not ashamed of it but it does bother me when strangers come up to me and yell "get off the ice bender."

    Had this problem as a kid and as a result I never got into skating. A couple of years ago I got a new pair of skates and suddenly, for the first time in my life, I didn't have this problem anymore. Now I skate 2x a week with my son and love it. For the beginner, the right skate is critical. Now my problem is that without taping the top of my skates I get sort of wobbly from side to side on the blade. Not sure if that's lack of ankle strength or lack of boot stiffness. When taped, all is good.

    I thought you were going to talk about pronation of the feet. Even if you have perfectly fitting skates the skates going over on inside edges still happens. Six years of leg & ankle strengthening exercises as well as a lot of skating and at last both my feet are now centred on the blade. Knocked kneed people have this problem a lot.

    Just a tip mate, the easiest and best way to check the width is, after you've gone for a skate, take your skate inserts out and look for wearing, any rubbing around logo printing etc. Using this method, you'll also be able to tell if they're the correct length by the wear mark.

    Hi, my boots is Vapor x60 leaning outwards instead. On ice seems fine but after 30 min my ankle sore, after practice is done. Walking with the skates is painful... ankle and tiny toe area. Any idea why?

    So I've always had the trouble of a slight inward fall to my skates because I'm flat footed. Add to that the fact that I'm 6'7" and, by your measurements, 20 Stone. Not sure how to cure it, though I am thinking it's a combination of flat feet and their effect on my ankles over 28 years, cheaper skates and not enough practice. Any idea of the stiffness I should be looking for? I was a goalie when I played and I never had this big an issue. Unfortunately you sacrifice certain types of motion with goal tacks so I was hoping I could find a great all-rounder. I've heard that GRAF might be a possible solution? Thanks!

    i believe one of my biggest figure skating sins was to begin in the ice using hockey skates, but lets be honest, its just more easy. though i eventually had to get used to figure skaters asp.
    when i started using hockey skates on the ice my feet went to the side SO EXTREMELY MUCH that it was basically imposible to step on the ice.
    this video was really helpful!

      Figure skates are actually much easier for beginners.
