Great vid IDG & HoW. Aemon the Dragonknight certainly one of my and many other people's favorite Targaryens ; readers and in-universe characters alike. Refreshing blend of attributes - honorable , noble, brave , dutiful , chivalrous , incredible warrior and does not come across egotistical or arrogant. To me Aemon is basically the antithesis of his brother Aegon IV / the Unworthy. Anything is possible until given clarity but i personally do not think Aemon and Naerys had this accused affair ; both being quite virtuous , pious and dutiful i just don't think either would fully go there despite the desire & temptation. Coupled with that I obviously do not believe Aemon is Daeron II's father. Personally i think that Aegon IV being such a philanderer and a cruel , petty , corrupt person who was not widely liked or admired. To me he resented what Aemon and Daeron II represented - widely loved & respected, honorable , noble ,competent and moral people ; so that AT4 took it upon himself to try and slander them by imo spreading the false parentage claims. Aemon and Daeron were basically everything that Aegon was not. And as the vid mentioned even so Aemon did not hesitate giving his life saving his brother AT4 , despite the slander and strained relationship. If memory serves even after such an act of valor and the love and respect the masses had for Aemon , AT4 did not properly venerate or mourn Aemon after his death. To me just further clarity that Aegon IV would spread such false rumors given his resentment and agenda against Aemon and Daeron II. Certainly fits AT4's character. Aemon certainly a great Targ in many of our opinions, refreshingly different to a great many of the rest. And given his honor , selflessness and dutiful side def many parallels to Jon ; which likely gives rise to theories that Aemon is actually Jon's given name at birth , though tbd.
Yeah well in real English history there are too many Henries and Edwards, and somehow despite quite a few Edmunds an Edmund never made it to the throne post-Anglo Saxon era.
I found that strange as well. It's one of those royal names, like Arthur, that always seem to be inches from the throne without ever reaching it. Also, the best/worst thing about English history isn't just the number of Henries, Richards, and Edwards, but the fact that several parents would remarry and then have another son with the same name as sons from their first marriage.
Great video love the detail of the history do you have /are you planning a video exploring the history of Maester Aemon I find that story of how he became a maester very interesting
I'm pretty sure Jon and Robb played as Aemon and Daeron when they were kids. The young dragon and wolf dying admist their conquest. While the Aemon's continue on gurading the realm through the kingsguard and nights watch.
Robert I have to ask: do you do any sort of post processing to your audio like equalization or do you just record and post? Because your voice so smooth I at times wonder if it's wholly natural.
"Aemon's brother Aegon preceded him by about half a year"....this left my quite confused, as it should be biologically impossible for their mother to give birth twice in 6 months. or am I missing something?

@Insider887 I also believe he was just a carring brother and aegon 4 used that against him I'm just saying him and narys having a relationship isn't impossible.
I'm inclined to think that perhaps Aemon and Naerys are an antithesis to Jamie and Cersei. Perhaps he did father Daeron and then join the Kingsguard (or maybe he and Naerys were unsure and joined anyway as a way not to be tempted again). Granted Jamie was already a Kingsguard when he fathered Joffrey (and the rest) but that's what makes Aemon and Naerys the opposite of Jamie and Cersei. Aemon's oath prevented him from continuing/pursuing anything with Naerys. Jamie looked at his oath, waved at it as he went by, and carried on his merry way with Cersei.
I'm always confused by Brans dreaming of becoming a knight, as I didn't think the North embraced that tradition, what with it being linked to the worship of the 7. Or am I missing something?
I think it's very facile, and I'm pretty sure it's not Martin's intent, to say that this character is that era's Jon Snow, or Sansa or Tyrion or whoever. It's more to say that history tends to repeat itself and that characters probably try to emulate either intentionally or not someone they admired.
"We might even see him on screen someday with his three-headed dragon helm. We can only hope." Oh, yeah. Really looking forward to more of GRRM's work being turned into absolute garbage.
Or or or. Forty dragon riding families, right? Targaryens far from the most powerful. Their dragons were bred for war....so they have slave ancestry or royal ancestry? Like how were the forty families ranked? Based on wealth? Ancestry? How did they divide the wealth initially? Was their relative weak position in the forty families because they were of slave descent or because they were of noble descent (and other dragon riding families kept them in check?). I WANT MORE
He should have killed his brother before he joined the Kingsguard, would have saved the realm a lot of harm what with all the Blackfyre Rebellions and such
Hi! It's April! It reads to me as if there's a real split inside the Targaryen family that wasn't ever really recorded. We, as the reader, have to sus it out.
Honestly the whole kingsguard being celibate is ridiculous. Why do bodyguards have to be celibate? You don’t see the US secret service or any kind of royal bodyguard unit in the Middle Ages being celibate. It’s a rule that probably most kingsguard break anyway. Between Aemon the dragon knight, Terrance Toyne, Jaime Lannister, Criston Cole and Meryn Trant it’s obvious that it doesn’t stop them from doing it.
Having children means having divided loyalties. To whom should the bodyguard be loyal to; to the king or to his child? Celibacy is a good solution for that.
I feel like part of the issue is modern people, especially Americans with a relatively poor grasp of medieval [roughly European] history, struggle to grasp the power dynamics of marriage etc - particularly dynastic succession...
Yeah, it's almost as if this is a fictional story and adding the celibacy rule increases the opportunity for interesting plots and complicated relationships. It's almost as if the very first kingsguard we meet has an illegal sexual relationship that forms the inciting incident.
For me so far he's been someone I know is a big deal and has a big impact on history but there are some asoiaf characters I just haven't learned much about or retained much info about them. But when I read FAB I found I understood him and the commentary his character provides. He might be a poor example considering he's prominent in the somewhat popular HOTD tv show but hopefully it makes some sense. Maybe a better example would be someone like Aemon Brightflame. I know the infamous story of how he went nuts and drank wildfire, which I assume resulted in him catching fire and burning to death
