He stops taking them in the beginning of the movie and gradually opens up throughout the movie, of course with the help of Sam (Natalie Portman). In my opinion, the character development is part of what makes this movie fantastic. :)
While not a total fan of the movie...I do love this scene a lot, and her words are so true. I tried to convince one of my former girlfriends of this, being how she would sit in a chair, feeling sorry for herself and welcoming even more misfortune...even spreading it to me. It never did work, but I noticed I did not want to be anything like she was, and eventually....not even wanna be with her. Life is to live for...not to cry about all the time...

I know the world needs joyfull people, but also need melancholic people, and I hate when movies try to sell the joy person as someone superior to more neutral and serious ones. I am a melancholic person, not completely destitute of hapyness, and a hate when people, especially the ones that doesn't know me say: "smile, you need to smile, life is short to be with a poker face". I hate this manic pixe dream girl Natalie's caracheter.
