To those of you who read the description: You are an excellent subscriber! :)
The St Petersburg Tournament of 1914 featured the joint winners of the 1914 All Russian Championship and players who had won at least one major tournament. There were the veterans Blackburne and Gunsberg, established masters such as Tarrasch, Bernstein, Janowski, Nimzowitsch, Alekhine and Marshall as well as the World Champion Lasker and his two most prominent rivals, Rubinstein and Capablanca.
The tournament was divided into two sections. The first stage from the 21st April to the 6th of May was an all-play-all event with the first five finishers proceeding into the second stage which ran from the 10th to the 22nd of May. This second stage was a double round all-play-all with the scores from the preliminaries being carried over to the final.
Prizes amounted to 1200, 800, 500, 300 and 200 Rubles. Each non-prizewinner received 20 Rubles for every game won and 10 Rubles for every drawn game.
A brilliancy prize was being considered for Nimzowitsch vs Tarrasch, 1914 after the 5th round's finish, but more than 2 rounds later, it was awarded a 2nd brilliancy prize as the runner-up to the Capablanca vs O Bernstein, 1914 coup.
The main source for this collection was the St. Petersburg 1914 International Chess Tournament book by Dr Siegbert Tarrasch. ISBN 0-939433-17-6.

First game where I felt Capablanca was legitimately out played.
This and the Rubinstein game where Capablanca was sick - he got whooped pretty bad in that one, and this one. He's still very young here, and Lasker was champ for 27 years for a reason. Really interesting rivalry they had here - amazing how Lasker had his number early on, before Capablanca ultimately dominated their championship match.
Yeah, B-B7 was a real lemon.
@Oissev Onos I agree with you, but I don't think you can take much away from Capablanca in his win even with the factors. He defeated the greatest chess player of all time up to that point, a guy who was champ in two different centuries. That's what makes it most impressive.
Lasker was aging, and it's no shame to him as he was a great champion and he lost to a worthy opponent who played excellently. Circumstances or not, I'm not disparaging Lasker.
Old age and treachery will always prevail over youth and skill.
@@marcjohn9404 From the point of view of a 70-year-old (me) a 46-year-old Lasker doesn't look so old! :)
Emanuel Lasker earned an S+ on White Pieces
Jose Raul Capablanca left the room
He earned a chest
I dont know how many people do really understand this
Lasker was a genius, definitely one of the best, I don't understand why he is so underrated when the discussion"who was the greatest player" comes up
Ramiro Perez Because my win rate was markedly better, and I had Staunton running in terror like a scared little girl.
Well, he isnt exactly. Kramnik once wrote an article about all the WC before him and from all of them he praised Lasker the most. According to Kramnik Lasker was the first player to play modern chess. Thats why he got ignored. Nobody understood was he was doing and claimed he "was good in playing the opponents psychology" etc. But Kramnik explains that Lasker was the first player ever to understand how to convert strategic advantage into tactical advantage and vice versa.
www.chess.com/blog/Spektrowski/vladimir-kramnik-from-steinitz-to-kasparov
Here is the article.
Edit: Another relativly unknown fact is, that Lasker was a great mathematician and a good friend of Albert Einstein, who discussed alot of mathematical problems in his theories with him.
Great feedback and comments folks! The level of details and the analysis given along with the historical references far surpassed the expectations of my initial humble note. Thanks for taking the time to reply.
@@colinmurphy2214are you related to Paul Morphy no wonder
Lasker was a heck of a player; a while back I saw some statistics of computer analysis of chess masters games; Lasker had one of the highest error-free ratings. Lasker really liked the exchange variation of the Ruy Lopez, giving white a pawn majority on the kingside.
@Oissev Onos you are one true lasker fan. I remember your comment in another video where you said he doesn't get enough attention. Fingers crossed for a laskers saga. Good day to you sir
Today I visited the Marshall chess club in New York, what a great experience! Thanks for the videos!
Excellent game by Lasker. That is the kind of defeat which makes a player walk away shaking their head in wonder and disbelief. So convincing and one sided a game must effect the psyche of a player, even one as confident as JRC. Thank you for the saga and vast knowledge.
This series feels like an adventure, good job!
Edit :
I'm thankful for your likes, have a good day!
I really love this series
Great job Agadmator
Your attitude, a inspiring mixture of respekt, appriciation and irony is just perfekt for the endless joy and vast knowledge of chess.
Thx a lot for i enjoy every video of yours!
I think Lasker also deserves a saga
Rubinstein deserves it more i think. Sort of a last highlighted player because he was never World Champion and went nuts after that.
Lasker is one of the most underappreciated world champs. Petrosian too.
Yeah totally agree with you. I think his saga would teach more humanistic approach to chess.
Rubenstien and Lasker would be great candidates for a saga.
Lasker was one of the greatest gamers of all time. He figured out what it took to beat each player and carried it out. Without a doubt, one of the greatest chess champions of all time. Despite what that nut ball Bobby Fischer said about him.
This is my favourite game. Emanuel Lasker is my favourite player.
There is so much that is said about this game that doesn't even discuss the moves. People talk about the psychology, the fight, the rivalry. Oh, and the moves ain't bad!
I love that fact you show games when the Saga guy loses....without doubt one best videos of the series. ...enjoying the show
So I'm just home from watching a local Northern Ireland theatre company put on Chess the musical, it was very good, during the show part of the scenery was the photos of all the past world champions, and because of your channel I had increased "my vast knowledge" and knew all but two. Thanks for all the photo challenges.
Martin
Absolutely screw you Martin!
Loving this Saga. Lasker was champ for almost 30 years for a reason - he was very tough to play against back then.
Not possible . Kasparov was the longest reigning champ @ 20
@@mylifematters858 You have bad info my dude, Lasker was undisputed champ 1894-1921.
@Oissev Onos I've seen some data that suggests Lasker was actually better after he lost the title, having higher rating than even Capablanca frequently from 1921-1926 when he finally started to fall off.
@Oissev Onos man you're one hell of a lasker fan 👍
I've been waiting for this moment since the 1911 tournament but I never thought it will happen in such a beautiful game
One of the best games I have ever seen! Lasker's control of space is amazing!
Lasker and capablanca rivalry was one of the best in history.
Along with Federer-Nadal
Capablanca-Alekhine
Hashtag marshall attack
Love that picture of Lasker! He looks like a mad scientist!
i was just waiting for the video man!! Even though it's quarter past one in India, I was badly waiting for it.

I'm Indian and watching at 4am lol
Bro I am with u
It was a cute gem. Really enjoyed. Thanks for sharing Antonio.
At last poor Lasker took a marvel out of his old hat!
Yes Lasker deserves a saga
Hard not to root for Lasker with playing a game like this. Especially rushing into Jose's strong suit; the end game.
ww i was waiting so long for this game , this game is so beauty , capablanca wa so confident of his positional play, and lasker was like hold my beer and showed who is the champ, respect for both of those legends , and for you to be holding the champ you have to show the world you can beat positional , best end game player , by plying with the style of his fevor , i think lasker deserves his games to be shown on this channel , next lasker saga thats sounds great
Love these videos, you are amazing for making them to this high level each time. Thanks
“Lasker saga” that sounds good saying it 👍 😎
Oissev Onos you have a great day too
@@gonzalo4658 why are you gae?????
Oh com-on agadmator, waiting for your videos each day n I'm watching other videos till you upload your video,
Okay, now the real words...
Thanks, for - for the good work and good work should be appreciated.
I learn a lot from your work, like everything about chess and lot more to go.
Big thanks to you agadmator. Love from New Delhi India.
I really really appreciate and love your work.
Thank You :)
The mood music was much more appropriate for an epic battle, that's for sure anyway. The game itself sure was great, especially for Lasker and shows why he was a legend as well. Thx, great coverage too.
“Cunning fox” won the game!! Lasker was old but he was really smart.when Lasker need a win he usually achieved it.He had two PHDs!! Thanks agadmator
Oissev Onos agree👍. Someone in his forty is almost old for a tough competition. Karpov was 34 when lost to Kasparov.Kramnic was 42 when quiet. Kasparov was in his early 50s when quiet professional chess. He lost his title at his early 40s.But Lasker was still strong in his 70s in Moscow. He was heavy smoker with gray hair and mustache. I used “ cunning fox” to describe how dangerous he was and how deep moves he could find. Of course I did not mean to contempt his games. I admire his style 😃
What a game for Lasker great job utilizing his knights in the endgame those Rooks so powerful in great positions opposite each other . Great game thanks Agadmator
It has been over a year since I last missed an agadmator’s video. I think it was during the Kasparov or maybe the sorcery series, that’s why I like to call myself an excellent loyal subscriber
kudos for the FF music :D your saga playlist is absolutely amazing! since a few days I am totally invested into it. Great work
Aahhhh, your quotes, man, your quotes... so true... and it’s so fulfilling to have the impression you understand...
Loads up you tube. Finds a new video from Agadmator. Grabs a coffee and plays video, "Hello everyone welcome back to the Capablanca saga " yep my Saturday couldn't begin any better.
A video no body can dislike. Truely magnificient!!!
Agadmator: it's very interesting what Laskar will choose.
Laskar: actually plays the Ruy Lopez
A really great game and an impressive victory for Lasker!
Every time I see Capablanca vs Lasker I can’t help but to cheer for Lasker!
Lasker was a beast. Stayed so sharp, for so long.
Lasker uses hypnotism: I now own you! Time to install a green screen background to match the epic music. To make the games have the appearance of actual play linking the portraits to the side of play was a nice touch with the recent Chess24 rapid contest. I liked the live feed aspect despite its obvious flaws. Carlsen actually reviews his own play retrospectively finding errors and future tactics that he missed, whereas Svidler seemed more positional than tactical and missed some opportunities. Your site is becoming more serious as Capa falls. This game shows all of his weaknesses in the opening and middle game and the lack of an end game strategy. Chess can be harsh like that at times.
Man, Lasker is good. I would've liked to see Spassky vs. Lasker
Just to write a comment so that TH-cam does not accidentally unsubscribe me :) - I managed yesterday to draw against Magnus Carlsen Age 11 App!!!! This would not have been possible without all hints and mini-lessons from this channel! Great stuff! BIG THANK YOU! And keep it up!
Appreciate your vids, really enjoy them, I started liking chess a lot more after finding your channel. Epic music though for chess lol? Idk I was thinking more Beethoven, a classical and mathematic rhythm.
Excellent video.
Loving this saga.
With the epic music in the background this turn into something else
Agadamator you're an amazing analysis of games, I've learnt a lot from your page.
how dare youtube think I wouldn't want this content in my life
8:34 I see engines are still not pulling punches. That was a very deep line. People would've called this witchcraft few hundred years ago. I know you don't like it because it is "exhaustive" but it inspires me to see that such lines are possible in chess. Keep em coming agadmator!
Thank you about this, your channel is offering us the viwers the golden opportunity to learn about chess
So much more interesting than your previous post, not interested in seeing weak players losing to the current world champion.
Thank you for the epic music!
Wow, anyone who could play such a game against the great Capablanca certainly deserved to be world champion! Not that Lasker's status was in any doubt, but damn! I bet Lasker, after this game, was all like "Yeah, I'm bad!" LOL
Finally, Lasker shows him who is world champion :D
Masterpiece by Lasker
Wow. Respect for Lasker. Chess is indeed a mind game.
Been following this channel for 2years but only subscribed now
Lasker is one of my favorite players...Capablanca's style bores me much of the time...always in a hurry to exchange pieces and get to the end game...great to see him lose for a change...🤣
I prepeared for this game with epic music even before you said it, listened to some Sabaton
I feel like I just watched a heavy-weight title fight. With a KO at the end.
That means there will be a decision not a draw hopefully
Wow, I was all this entire Capablanca saga looking forward to see Capablanca defeat Lasker...and in the decisive moment Lasker won the first game. I understand how Capablanca felt after the game...
it was not their first game
very nice game :D I like lasker's style.
Who dislike this? Great lesson on how to limit your opponent with simple play
I better comment just to be safe
Good idea
I agree
Totally agree
You are by far my favourite TH-camr
What a simple beauty by Lasker
Man, that epic music bring memories.
I feel like the people who click dislike on an agad vid actually mean "dis i like"
It’s hard to threepeat against the Laskers, just ask the Celstics, the Buslls, or the other NBA teams.
I’m just here to enjoy the show!
Hey agad. Loving all you work mate. What a great saga so far! It doesn't matter to me what the next saga is (lasker, alekhine, leela) but an idea I had was about a mini saga of the lesser known greats. The guys that had the potential to be world champs but lady luck had other plans ie rudolph charousek, mir sultan khan etc. Some interesting stories behind these guys.... Could increase our vast knowledge. Just a thought....
Master (Yi)Capablanca vs Dr.(Mundo) Lasker
BORK will do the job
Lasker look like heimerdinger
Did someone say League of Legends?
Agadmator actually plays LOL
Legendary league of legends league
@Xaxa xa He is an excellent purveyor of Shrooms™
Agosto Ceilings you sure?
One of my favorite games. CAN'T NO ONE BEAT EMMANUEL LASKER.
still subbed! I know I could look it up, but im just gonna watch these to see who wins the tournament :D
Nice to see the World Champion put the upstart in his place!
I like it when show a loss by someone you are featuring.
that music truly was epic
I was waiting for this.
Holy crap Agadmator, you were right! I had to resub!
Lasker dominated Capablanca from the opening to the endgame, amazing
Nice video as usual.Keep up with the good work :)
wow, so dominated. Respect for Lasker.
Lasker was also a first-rate mathematician
Someone commented on this game that the opening gives black a better position, provided he plays actively. But Capablanca was content with a draw, thus played passively. Clever psychology by Lasker. He found positions that did not suit the mode of the opponent. Actually, this may be the reason that he finally lost to Capablanca, who had few weak points that Lasker could explore.
When u said "and it was in this position that Jose Raul Capablanca resign the game" my heart really was broken :'(
Every time I watch you I go and play
One of my favourite Lasker proved himself
I actually got into chess because of my LoL obsession.
Same. The similarities are kind of wild
Same. My teammates are still the ones holding me back tho, why are the enemy pieces always better?
@@yoyoiven IKR? It spooks me how alike the 2 are.
@@hardikho the pros always seem to do more with the same champs/pieces
idk why but i know *that's true*
Listened to epic music. Now I am good subscriber
One of the best games of the classical era!
Sometimes it feels as if Capablanca is like an engine with his moves and gambit refutations, but when playing against the world champion he faced some difficulties.
i haven't watched yet but i hope lasker wins
i could only imagine the frustration of capa after this game... knocking down your king then everyone applauded? i would love to see this game live
Superb match
If it weren’t for Paul Morphy and Bobby Fisher, Capablanca would be my favorite chess master. I put Lasker as my number four. These were great men!
Beautiful game!
Very true, he just hypnotized him and just like that Capablanca found himself in a worse position without realising it lol
Is that Light? 😂😂
Even youtube algoritms think that im an excellent subscriber, as it doesn"t unsubscribe me. Maby because I watch all your videos
Hey Antonio,
I was wondering. Was there at some point in history a chess player that was considered very strong but when colliding with an unorthodox master of some ‘far away’ place ( be it a city or a country ) he was completely destroyed?
I did some research and I found Wilhelm Steinitz to be considered the father of positional chess. He defeated the strongest player of his time, Adolf Andersson, in 1866. I can image Andersson being very confused when playing against Steinitz for the first time. He simply could not have encountered such an opponent anywhere before.
Now what I am looking for is a match with a big unexpected contrast between the players. Like Usain bolt challenging superman. ( Or you could just do a video on that game. Steinitz vs Andersson )
#suggestion
@Oissev Onos Thank you I didn't know.
I see you're a man of Culture
