  • This week on Inside The Ambulance, Michelle and Hannah respond to a clinic where a premature baby is showing signs of a serious infection, Joe and Hannah rush to the aid of a man who has burned himself in a barbecue accident. Nicole and Lee go to a 4-year-old boy who had his leg crushed under a concrete slab.
For the very first time, an ambulance has been rigged with cameras that provide a unique perspective on what it's like to respond to emergency calls. Paramedics from the West Midlands Ambulance Service in England take us right into the heart of the action. We see heroism at work in the actions of these first responders. We also enter the lives of people in crisis and learn their unique stories.

That is so important you have no idea. When I was three years old I slammed my fingers in a door and they were almost completely severed from my hand. I ran to my mom screaming. My mom was so calm and gentle. We rushed to the hospital but she kept herself relaxed the entire time. I still remember the whole ordeal 21 years later and it helped me get through the trauma.

Nejjidragon Yep! They want to avoid the ambulance charges, so they decide to drive themselves to the hospital when they have chest pains or seizures. I imagine some people die or risk their health; and even the safety and lives of other drivers, because the rescue is so expensive, even after insurance. It shouldn't be like that.

Well, it's not that we wouldn't have to pay for it. We pay every time we get our salary. Even if we never need an ambulance.

@@NinaZuccaro0824 i'm from germany. We pay 16.3% of our salary in health care. That includes emergency/lifesaving and basic medical treatment. For example, you get in a car accident and brake your leg, then you get an ambulance payed and the cast/operation for your leg. If you have a nasty scar from it, you have to pay for the beauty op yourself. Or you have another insurance that covers that.
Or if one of your teeth is broken, the dentist extracts it, but you have to pay for the implant yourself.
Don't get me wrong, I think everybody should have access to emergency treatment! And I do believe our healthcare system is better than the US's. But it sure is expensive for every one of us here.

    • @flxmkr
      @flxmkr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +50

Random User but, see, we make those payments, too. But ours goes to public education (even if you have no kids in public schools OR if your kids are in an expensive private school)...and I'm not saying you don't have these taxes. But our taxes are being used frivolously. For instance, in one state, over 2000 food stamps are going to dead people. DEAD people! They don't need food! They ARE food (for bugs and such). It was published, which means they are aware of it. But do nothing about the fraud. That's over $1 million a month in JUST one state. And if you're thinking, "maybe the people spending them need the food", it's more likely they are already getting their own food stamps. I was on the WIC program for a couple years. There was so much cheese in my freezer and milk in my refrigerator, I had to throw a lot of it away. The government doesn't know how to figure the amount of food a person needs. It was supposed to feed my 2 year old and 4 year old, but I was getting enough for four grown adults, and then some. We are paying for all kinds of frivolous spending. Federal workers being given petty cash cards and using them to buy concert tickets and booze, instead of necessary work-related expenses. If we put our heads on straight, and manned up a bit, we could afford to pay medical costs, too. We need to get our act together.

Her older sister, 2 at the time, had brought home Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease from preschool and infected her mum, who in turn passed it on to the baby. Little Miss T was so young she developed meningitis quickly, and was in intensive care for a few days. We got very lucky as there were no lasting effects of the infection.

Nobody would have thought it to be this sickness. I will be forever grateful that my aunt and uncle decided to take the baby to the hospital just when they did, the staff told them 5 times in 5 minutes that their daughter was very sick. Lost my mom in April 2017, she had end-stage kidney failure and congestive heart failure, diagnosed three years prior. What sent her to the ER was chest pain and pneumonia, ten minutes later, she had cardiac arrest and on life support in a coma, and died in less than one week. I had talked on the phone with her the night before she went to the ER, and was the last conversation, she said she loved me and was ready to "go home" and finally see her parents again.

@@orellagillette2484 Every time I hear about the healthcare system over there it angers me so much. The fact that it's a normal thing is insane. I'm in Canada. I live literally 5 minutes from the border. If we can have universal health care there is no reason you guys can't.
When I broke my ankle a couple years back, my parents drove me in but in total? I paid $15 and change for the crutches. I think it would have been $20 for an ambulance? but I didn't need it.
The fact that healthcare is a luxury... I really, really hope enough people get sick of it and finally something changes.
(of course, a lot of people with the power to change it won't have to worry about it... That $40,000 probably means nothing to them. Wouldn't put them back at all. Unbelievable.)

ellie if they can start an IV, which they can, they should be able to take blood, keep it in a refrigerated containment (if ice cream trucks can have freezers, I'm sure ambulances can have refrigerators). The tubes already have the anticoagulants or whatever is necessary to carry out particular bloodtests. They have all the necessary equipment in bloodmobiles. The doctor could order the necessary blood tests over the phone and the paramedic can have it ready for the lab as soon as they arrive. While one paramedic is wheeling the patient in to the ER, another paramedic can be rushing the blood to the lab. It would be one less thing the trauma team has to worry about when stabilizing the patient.

If this were the US, the parents would have had to get the kid with a broken leg into their car in excruciating pain to avoid going bankrupt over the ambulance ride. Once getting to the hospital the front desk would need to make sure they get all your information so they can get paid. Then (still without pain medication) they wait in the waiting room for 3-5 hours due to the severely understaffed hospital. Then they probably would set the leg without painkillers and send you home.

On 24 Hours in A&E, I've heard doctors describe their obviously-dying patients as "very unwell."

I'm amazed on how much they care about patients pain. And treat it so fast! The mental well being is so important. God bless all of them.

2:05 "I'm from Yorkshire, you shouldn't mess with a cuppa tea." Man after my own heart. For me, one sugar, dash of milk, stir, slrrrrp. That's about as far as I "mess with" a cuppa :P

I don’t think I could ever be a paramedic. I would be sobbing hardcore if I had to respond to a call like the final story 😭

Ive been an ICU and ER nurse for 40 years, learning to start IV's on kids is so stressful and it just takes time and experience. The little guy is being such a great little trooper

My dad was in hospice care at home. He had already told me if he had something he would take it. In seriousness, I told him if I had anything I would give it to him. The next day I got my mom out of earshot of everyone and asked her what she wanted to keep up his strength for.
