I do remember Samael being a harbinger of death, but revered God and did things as with respect to his creator, and thusly, a far-reaching metaphor/personification for "God can turn the evils of people into opportunities for good." or something along those lines. Samael's name is so intrinsically connected to only the Greek texts, as the original Hebrew with such words were lost- so we are left with words like Sammani and Samiel- this one being from a supposed direct translation. What's weird is, in Hebrew, Sami means blind, so "The Blindness of God" could be a proper title when adding the el to it- as if to say, "God will turn a blind eye"- Sammani actually is two-prong in Greek, as the name might literally mean, "Flowering Hand". Not to mention, the actual Hebrew word "Sama'l" actually means "Use Your Left Hand" or "Turn Left Handed" and if you understand what the "left hand of God" means, you start to realize better what Samael actually might be- but if you don't, just consider that the Latin word for Left Handedness also means "Sinister". In some intricate way, Samael isn't the official Hebrew title, but Hebrew, Greek, and Latin are all very uniquely intertwined, and thus the angel might even be a personification of not only God's, but also our own, tendencies to be compassionate and coldhearted via different situations, and very rarely, at the same time. An angel of nuance... and anti-villain of sorts. Things we cannot place into our mortal boxes of "good" or "bad", and varies so much that it will be on different scales for different people, sometimes even the same people depending on the mind of said person. I don't really see how Samael can be linked with "that one Satan" that we call Lucifer, because, in Hebrew text, that title of Lucifer is literally "Helel" which lines up with all of the other angel names, but by some weird course of action, Lucifer was massively accepted as a name for the most pridefully created being long before the English translation of the KJV.

Belial is another name for Satan found in the old testament, infact it is mentioned referring to Samael before ( Samael / Belial ) took the name Lucifer morningstar .
He is an Angel that administers JUSTICE. He is feared and so this is why some feel he is of the Devil but he carry’s out God’s Vengeance on the wicked. Hope that helps 🤍
In my Book, Samael is a Fallen Angel and Prince of Hell, but seen more as a necessary evil. He opposes God, literally acting as a Devil’s Advocate, but in a “Counter Argument that Strengthens the Main argument” way and fulfills a duty as a Destroyer Angel. He’s obviously not well liked because of this, but most of the characters accept that he is needed to keep the clockwork of the Universe turning correctly
I like that idea. I see him as balance. Still good, but representing the good that bad can do. Death, pain, misery, are often seen as grim things and therefore bad. But considering Yin and Yang(balance, which is constantly mentioned), because of death, there must be life. Because of pain, you can also feel pleasure. And because you can drown in misery, you can also float in happiness. A necessary evil is correct.
Samael is the only angel that realised what god is and acted upon it and got renamed the adversary (lucifer) as punishment Samael disliked that god created humans with no knowledge on good or evil so humans never knew what was right and what was wrong and because Samael is the embodiment of the virtues he felt betrayed that god created humans without any of Samael in them (virtues) and god then told Adam and Eve and Lilith that if they eat the apple they will die that very day Samael not being granted access to the garden by YHWH (god) because YHWH (god) knew Samael (lucifer) would temp humans to eat the apple and gain knowledge on what is good and what is evil transformed himself into a snake and convinced the guarding angel to let him slip inside he then told the humans the truth about the apple and that YHWH was lying to them to keep them from being most highest (embude with the virtues) so YHWH named samael’s sin as pride and cast him down to hades (hell) Samael is the reason we know good from evil and are honorable and caring species, Most of us
@@joekerr8175 There’s a lot going on here. First off- where did you get ANY of that information? Secondly- Lucifer isn’t the Adversary. “Satan” translates to the Adversary, while Lucifer (who isn’t even in the Bible save a mistranslation) actually translates to Light Bringer.
Samael kinda reminds me of The Seraphim (Dr. Samuel Hayden) from DOOM. Both have similar names, both are angels, both are neither good nor evil but work with the two sides, and both worked with a woman (Samael worked with Lillith and Samuel Hayden worked with Olivia Pierce).
@@stuffylamb3420 In The Ancient Gods Part 1, Hayden was revealed to be the Seraphim (technically he is a makyr, the DOOM version of an angel). During the Doomslayer's time in Argent D'nur, the Seraphim was the one who granted him his power. The Seraphim also was a servant to the Father, who in The Ancient Gods Part 1 was revealed to be Vega. The Seraphim transformed himself as a human during his years in the UAC and adopted the name Samuel Hayden (I think this is what happened). The reason he wanted his robot body was so he could tread on Hell's soil. Because he is a makyr, and makyrs cannot set foot in Hell. During The Ancient Gods Part 1, Hayden transforms back into the Seraphim and abandons his robot body. So he can't set foot in Hell again, which was why the Doomslayer was sent to the blood swamps to retrieve the Father's life sphere. Even though the Slayer's intention was to destroy it so he could get the Dark Lord's life sphere and to resurrect him. So the Doomslayer goes back to Urdak to resurrect the Dark Lord.
I (someone from a harsh Catholic upbringing) was always thought that Samael was originally the name of Lucifer. Lucifer was the name given to him by the church to discredit the goal of luciferication (the enlightening) that the scientific scholarly few that the church viewed as heretical wished to bring about. The timeline I was told was samael was the original angel of mercy and death but grew jealous of humans free will so fomented an uprising. After which he was the angel of sin and rebellion. The term Satan was given to him by early religious scholars (some say by the Host) to refer to Samael as one of the punishments was that in addition to being removed from the light of god he was also stripped of the name god gave to him as that was part of god's grace.
Well that's cool. I'm a believer but not really religious and I found your piece very interesting. I like hearing different versions and tails about different mythologies religion or otherwise. So thanks for sharing
But... The timeline makes sense, but the fact of his jealousy makes no sense at all... And his rebellion? The story makes god seem incompetent to the extend that his "perfect" creation is made with any kind of purpose...
@@MrCaptainErik my reading of it was that God made the angels to obey. And with them created everything. And this was fine as up to that point god's word was law. (Said there was light, there was suddenly light.) Then god created humanity and gave them free will. Samael/Lucifer/Satan then saw a lesser creature being given gods love and the ability to determine their own fates and grew jealous as he didn't understand why this lesser race was given such freedom when the host were not. He then tempted Adam and Eve to prove god fallible, (he said they were forbidden to do something and they did it anyway), and in proving that god's word was fallible used that doubt to start a rebellion, believing if god could be imperfect then what's to stop him from ruling instead.
Well the name probably comes from Akkadian where it was one of the epithets for the God Ea who was equivalent to the later Sumerian God Enki. The creation myth of Sumeria states Enki created humans and shared with them procreation and knowledge in hopes that they would one day be able to become gods. So those stories and religion got passed onto the Cannenites who worshipped essentially the same gods with different names. A sect of them broke off, the Hebrews, and made Yahweh God God and made their version of Enki into the villain who tempted humanity and made us sin. I very much enjoy religion from a historical perspective. Going back and tracing how the stories changed as people migrated and met others
I think Nergal from Mesopotamia, Mot from Canaan, or any underworld judges like Minos in Hades or Anunaki in Mesopotamia underworld seems more fitting for Samael, but gods of knowledge like Thoth or Hermes are associated with death too, so I can see the connection with Enki.
@@miltonbates6425 he's wrong. Enki is literally the sumerian pagan image of Heyl-El/lucifer. The obvious connection?! Enki, an aquatic God, and what is Heyl-El?! A SERAPHIM, which are Aquatic dragon type angels. Only thing Sumerian text got right is mankind did get blood from Enki. That's because the grape vineyard tree of knowledge of good and evil was from The Devil's seed. That is why The Messiah died on the tree. He shed the blood to walk like Adam before the fall, hence the title "Second Adam. Anu of the ANUNNAKKI is EL ELYON ELOHIM of Abraham. His real name is YHVH(YAHOVAH)/I AM THAT I AM. Enlil and UTU ANUNNAKKI are pagan images of the Messiah, IMANU-EL. His inherited name as a jew, is YAHUSHUAH While CHRISTOS is actually a title. he inherited the three parts of the father's name, "YAH/I AM". All of our world's religions prove that the tower of babel in shinar was real
This is why I simply love the mythology of angels and demons. They have a lot of lore and alternative forms/stories/purposes that can often be compared to, or even intertwined with, the Greek mythologies.
So what's the difference between Samael and Azrael? Also could you talk about Ramiel? it would seem that he is one of (if not THE) most important arch angel. He'd also technically be one the most relevant angels within the bible considering he's largely responsible for all religious visions (and possibly all religious thought in general?)
Its interesting since none of these arch angels are mentioned in the regular Bible except Michael and Gabriel. All the mentions of these other angelic entities are only mentioned in the books that have been dropped from the Bible over the years, or in obscure books from obscure versions of the Bible used in obscure christian denominations like Ethiopian Orthodox (which has 17 more books than the Greek orthodox and 20 more than roman catholic and 24 more than protestant...)
Samael saved Lilith from death and loved her in general, no further info what happened to him, except that they were cursed by Jahve and all their children were demons. Azazel was one of the Angels who gave knowledge to the humanity and had a child with human woman. He was one of the Watchers, now punished by Jahve and chained under the ground, being tortured, waiting for the final days to come to be probably freed again.
@@-jank-willson Samael+Lilith it's the story I learned from my Kabbalistic teacher. + it's in Jewish legends (12 books in total). Azazel - book of Enoch no. 1
Whenever i hear about Samael, i think about the wolf from the second puss in boots movie for the "death" and "terrifying badass" aspect. And on the other hand on a few lines from "the plagues" in prince of egypt. "I send a pestilence and plague Into your house, into your bed, Into your streams, into your streets, Into your drink, into your bed, On your cattle, on your sheep On your oxen, in your field Into your dreams, into your sleep, Until you break, until you yield I send the thunder from the sky, I send the fire raining down, I send a hail of burning ice, On every field, on everytown I send the locusts on the wind, Such as the world has never seen, On every leaf, on every stalk, Until theres nothing left of green I send the swarm, i send the horde, I send my scourge, i send my sword. Thus said the lord" I could honestly imagine him walking down a dark hallway, quietly singing that. He is terrifying, and he is twisted, and i would love to see an accurate represantation in a movie or something like that.
Blud I think Samael is a dark aggresive angel(Azreal is not a jerk like him) who has to do what he gotta do. I don't think hes evil, he's just misunderstood and a mystery. What i think makes him different from Azreal is his lack of remorse for humans and I think he is the angel who is sent by the Lord to test our faith in God. I think he's a dark but honest reprisentation that death is grim. He may be an angel but what ever duty he must fufil whether wrestling a man to going house to house killing infants HE WILL DO IT because one thing Samael will NEVER do is disobey the lords requests and orders. This is why i think of him as beerus from dragonball super, he's just doing what he must do. Thats also why i think lucifer and the anti-christ is more evil than Samael
@@Imfunnywithafewscrewsloose i agree. I think it is important to view Samael and Lucifer as different characters. Just one note on this: who is Beerus?
Really great discussion on one of the more shadowy figures (in religion). It is good to see that your channel is comfortable with leaving some myths and legends (and religious questions) in question. Good job!
After hearing this video, I'm reminded of how much ancient peoples loved writing fanfics of their religions, and I wonder if historians would have lost at least half of the effort it took to unravel the mysteries behind the tales and myths of dead religions if the ancients who documented them stopped writing their own spins and fanfictions.
Samael seems to be a bringer of change, as he plante the tree, he migth have let Eva astray and as the engel of death. The only consistences is change. So maybe he is to demonic for the engels and to holy for the demons, he will bring change
Change is what i would call both a blessing and curse, and is what set human apart from angels/demons With change we are given the ability to choose our own path in our existence, the freedom that demons and angels do not have as their nature is predetermined. So it would make sense for Samael to have it because from what i see, he's the between of the two, neither good nor evil. But we could also see him as a force of nature, as nature is unpredictable and the only way to survive it is to adapt, to change.
This is Creepy. Had never HEARD of this Name before. Then suddenly I come across it online randomly today and now again suddenly you made a video on them!
I've assumed at first he's a demon from Revelations as the The Accuser. Then, he's the Venom of God as an Angel or the Serpent that convinced Adam and Eve to eat the Apple from the Forbidden Tree.
Samael always confused me about Jahve having love to all men. The story about Lilith was so heart breaking. She as the first woman, created equally with Adam wanted to be treated equally, but Adam wanted her to be submissive, and complained to Jahve, he frightened Lilith twice to obey Adam, when she didn't listen sent angels to firce her or kill, she stopped them by using Jahve true name, then escaped Eden and stuffed a lot that decided to commit suicide and jump from the cliff. Then Samael stopped her and saved her live out of love to her. He was the only one truly loving her. Then Jahve punished her, that she would delivered children in pain and all of their children will be dead aka demons. But she stayed with him. So who is the asshole in this story?
@@arpa9009 maybe. it's mythology. you can apply whatever significance you like to it. But at least how Lilith is generally portrayed is that of a most fearsome and fatal demoness.
Great channel, Samael reminds me of Hell Priest, the angel demon of the Hellraiser films. I like the first 3 or 4 films, but I love all of the scenes with the original actor for Hell Priest, one of the best characters of all time.
From a Tao/Buddhist perspective to look at this, whether Samael is an angel or demon, it doesn’t matter. Whether or not he serve God or rebel against God, also doesn’t matter. What matters most is he tests the faith of Man, and makes us question our faith. From this perspective, the focus of Man should be to keep our faith strong to God, rather than to spend time and effort to identify his other creations. God chose us to be his favourite, and made us in his image, we may possess potential beyond all his other creations, but not while we are on Earth. So while being here, we should cultivate our soul to have an ultimate bond with God through an unbreakable Faith, only then, everything will flow into us naturally and we will transcend beyond all expectations. Hence, looking from this perspective, he actually helps us to further understand our faith and recognise where our flaws are. With tremendous effort, we may be able to perfect our relationship with God, as Samael points out where our weaknesses are.
He was trying to manipulate him to disobey God's command. He didn't listen to him though , if he listened to him , God could send him "samael" to destroy him. He is the seducer, the destroyer.
It has been stated that Lord Samael has been labeled " The poison of God" , " The Left Hand of God", " The Reaper of Monsters" and The Transporter of human souls. He has been associated to be The Grim Reaper if the souls he is about to collect have led a negative life and an Angel of Mercy to the Souls that led a positive life.
Someone allegedly called upon the Angel of Venom and claims this entity is not a fallen angel rather he is the left hand of God. Fear him as it is said he rivals even Azrael another angel who is said to be 300 heavens high and massive
Very complex and contradictory. No wonder he was not introduced in the Supernatural TV show. The name Samael being used as the original name for Lucifer in the Lucifer TV series seems more appropriate considering the complexity of the character.
I has a dream that he was coming for my mom, , he was breathtakingly beautiful, I told him to "Get back you can't take my mom".. She did end up passing away a year later...BTW..I didn't even know about Angel's then.
Samael is the Angel of God's Judgment. He is the chief of the Archangels and often acts in ways that are beyond the comprehension of mortals. His goal is to test men for their true mettle do determine if they truly do have the character to follow God. Also, recall that most of what we know of Samael comes from the Talmud and from Enoch, both of which were written from perspectives that would have been naturally antagonistic toward Samael and the Archangels in general. Samael is also the angel that wrestled Jacob in the book of Genesis. He is not evil, but he plays the role of the bad guy very often because someone has to.

He who increases knowledge, increases sorrow. The more I hear and read about religion, the more I am led away by so many confusing antidote or superstitions. "God" is omnipotent so why then didn't he/she know of the betrayal of Samael, or Lucifer? And why were the wonders of heaven smeared by the brutality of angels killing angels? So many questions
the point is to question, since humanity is just one big question...How did we end up here? There must be a reason, and this reason was set before the beginning of time. How come we see patterns throughout history, throughout different cultures, explaining tthe same scenarios over and over again such as the resurrection story? Jesus dying and resurrecting - Christianity parallels the Egyptian story of Osiris dying and resurrecting. Isis being betrayed by her sister from the underworld, Inanna being betrayed from her sister from the underworld.
Me too, the more I try to understand these things the more I get confused. What if evil is the shadow side of God and it's there to bring balance, I don't even know what I'm saying, I also thought samael is the Lucifer but now I'm more confused. It's depressing

A wonderful work my Friend, where do you suppose Samael got the vine he sowed that angered God? I must admit I find Samael a fascinating entity in service of the Heavenly Host.
In my eyes Samael is a primal entity, first angel that created death, I dont think he was evil since nothing is eternal in mythology it seems like, souls need to rest and thats whats Samael is for. But since the entity of life creates the souls, and we now have consciousness. Because we associate death with negativity and all that other angels took over probably, so I dont think Samael is evil but his actions mightve formed a lot of negativity? Idk im definitely not knowledgeable about this

He’s obviously not well liked because of this, but most of the characters accept that he is needed to keep the clockwork of the Universe turning correctly
are you a prophet?
@@dk4767 LMAO I WISH. I meant a fiction book, lol.
I know Samael mostly from Darksiders and he is a badass there.
Great job like always mate
Samael kinda reminds me of The Seraphim (Dr. Samuel Hayden) from DOOM. Both have similar names, both are angels, both are neither good nor evil but work with the two sides, and both worked with a woman (Samael worked with Lillith and Samuel Hayden worked with Olivia Pierce).
Did you see my comment { reply } to the owner of this channel { enveloped ✉️ in his own comment reply section } ? 🧐🤔😮💨
How is Hayden an angel?

I now straight up wait for this channel to upload, keep up the great work Mythology and fiction explained
I was also raised catholic and was taught Samael was Lucifer’s original name before he was banished.
"Satan" is literally "advasery", Meaning, anybody can be a "satan" towards somebody weather good or bad. Lucifer's real name is HEYL-EL
I think Samael is a neutral angle neither good nor evil but something in between but only god knows his angels.
I have always been confused by this and the "Sacrifice to Azazel" mentioned in the Old Testament. I am glad that I am not the only one! Good post!
I always liked samael he was my favorite. Keep on going with Christian mythology.
Interesting. Can I get your sources for this?
I think Nergal from Mesopotamia, Mot from Canaan, or any underworld judges like Minos in Hades or Anunaki in Mesopotamia underworld seems more fitting for Samael, but gods of knowledge like Thoth or Hermes are associated with death too, so I can see the connection with Enki.
you knowledge right here helps me soo much in my personal studies, thank you soo much!
I do like looking at this from a theological perspective. Well said
This is why I simply love the mythology of angels and demons.
I think Samael is the 'angel of death' that God charged with doing the plagues on Egypt, notably the killing the firstborns.
@@arpa9009 what book was that from?
@@-jank-willson Samael+Lilith it's the story I learned from my Kabbalistic teacher. + it's in Jewish legends (12 books in total). Azazel - book of Enoch no. 1
Yessss, I have been waiting for this. thanks!
Whenever i hear about Samael, i think about the wolf from the second puss in boots movie for the "death" and "terrifying badass" aspect.
And on the other hand on a few lines from "the plagues" in prince of egypt.
"I send a pestilence and plague
Into your house, into your bed,
Into your streams, into your streets,
Into your drink, into your bed,
On your cattle, on your sheep
On your oxen, in your field
Into your dreams, into your sleep,
Until you break, until you yield
I send the thunder from the sky,
I send the fire raining down,
I send a hail of burning ice,
On every field, on everytown
I send the locusts on the wind,
Such as the world has never seen,
On every leaf, on every stalk,
Until theres nothing left of green
I send the swarm, i send the horde,
I send my scourge, i send my sword.
Thus said the lord"
I could honestly imagine him walking down a dark hallway, quietly singing that.

Samael, AKA, the guy who took the phrase “It’s a dirty job, but someone’s gotta do it!” A little too far…
Samael seems to be a bringer of change, as he plante the tree, he migth have let Eva astray and as the engel of death. The only consistences is change. So maybe he is to demonic for the engels and to holy for the demons, he will bring change
Change is what i would call both a blessing and curse, and is what set human apart from angels/demons
With change we are given the ability to choose our own path in our existence, the freedom that demons and angels do not have as their nature is predetermined. So it would make sense for Samael to have it because from what i see, he's the between of the two, neither good nor evil.
But we could also see him as a force of nature, as nature is unpredictable and the only way to survive it is to adapt, to change.
Samael =lucifer are one person
But satan wanted to fooled people by claiming that Lucifer and samael are deferent

Lilith was not the first woman but created as a proto-eve.

Such a interesting 🤔💭 video indeed it's very intriguing to say the least.
Samael tells Abraham, "Hey, don't murder your kid!"...and *he's* supposed to be the evil one?
He was trying to manipulate him to disobey God's command. He didn't listen to him though , if he listened to him , God could send him "samael" to destroy him. He is the seducer, the destroyer.

Given how hard and brutal life could be back then. It’s not a surprise when looking to explain things within a religious ethos that they would need complex characters like this.

Idk im definitely not knowledgeable about this
the first entity of death would be Isfet. samael was a small fry.
