Bro can you please stop using those solder/shrink connectors? They truly are shyte.
This is truly disappointing you'd partner with a company like that. You should see the consumer complaints against them. The stories are heartbreaking.
I have a FBO 2005 GT. Trying to decide between FBO Coyote Swap or built 3V and boost…. 🤔
I know you get thousands of replies every day, but you're the only person I respect with this question. The death of Michael Hastings was that due to a runaway diesel or was he murdered. I'm asking you because you're the guy on youtube I respect the most when it comes to Mercedes.
My mustang is missing it's beef box lol is it alright!?
Saturday morning cartoons for men gone live. Thanks Alex.
I’m disappointed that you’re pushing a company like PDS, who may not have their clients’ best interests in mind, but business is business I suppose.
Dude right, I feel the same exact way
Where my Mustang people at? Whatcha got?
A Camaro. I have a reliable LS1 Camaro.
Ford escape 2l twin scroll turbo lol. 240hp 4wd.
1996 mustang gt with a built 5.0. if anyone has a t5 from a mustang let me know!!
97 Gt stock bottom end heads cams and all the usual upgrades with it
I’ve been looking forward to this one since you bought it. The last cobra episode was Dope ! 21’ Oxford white Mach 1 with the tremec
This is why I love this channel. Unlike most, when you fix issues, they are fixed as they are intended. Not grounds connecting 12 different operations. The fad is to undo everything the manufacturer did. Instead tweak those changes, don't try to reinvent the system.
“beef” on the ecu, is Terry “beefcake” Reeves 🤣 he’s still around, in the Mustang world
😂 grade 8 wiring job a
Funny thing is he's from around my area
awful.
Alex, don't use electrical tape. The best tape is Tesa's high temp harness tape. It's just like factory. 💯
Came here to recommend the same. Why not use what the manufactures live by.
yep, something like Tesa 51036 is the best!
I agree, the harness tape looks so much better!
I thought I had learned about it from Alex, and was surprised he didn't use it. The Tesa is the best IMO!
Agreed... Fabric tape is perfect for this.😂🐾🐾🐾
Alex... you sir without a doubt have to highest level of patience and diagnostic skills of anyone on the planet... you are a very brave man taking on the car projects that you do... much respect
Here here
i wish he would take on local projects for people. he is a rare talent.
Watching you figure out those mustang wire harness issues is mind boggling. You are one hell of a mechanic, educated in problem solving. This is why I watch your channel.
16:35 "🎵...and some parts to a Mustang GT."🎵
I agree same here
The SVT Cobra, in my opinion, is your best series so far. Literally waiting week to week more so than any commercial show I would watch on HBO, MotorTrend, Apple, Netflix, etc. . . By far my favorite most diverse and fun mechanics of any show I have ever watched. Keep up this incredible content! Oh, if you could add to the merch a SVT Cobra T Shirt with your silhouette dressed up as Star Trek Cyborg Harness man LOL!! Thanks for helping all us regular car enthusiast DIYers have the confidence to rip into our cars in fix them!! So satisfying!
The push to remove the key button on manuals is there so that you can't accidentally lock the steering lock. On an automatic you can't go to key out position except in park and neutral due to the key transmission interlock. The idea is if your throttle is stuck and you had to turn off the engine while driving it keeps you from locking the steering since in a manual there is no transmission key interlock.
I had no idea. Makes complete sense! Thanks for that! I hope Alex sees this comment
pin this to the top!
Wow that makes sense thank you for sharing your Knowledge
your level of skill and confidence taking on this amazes me. I would have torched the car.
I would have torched myself...
At 33:00 that was BEAUTIFUL diagnostics. If someone hadn't already burned down their car that could easily take weeks to sort out and good call to not assume the ECU was the fault without investigating further.
Agreed. That was an impressive find.
He already knew from experience that it was a short to ground somewhere. Knowing that he just reinstalled the harness, he also already knew where to start looking.
@TwentytenS4B8 ...and? What about me appreciating that diagnosis did you not understand? You just recalled the process and added "All he did was...." If you don't grasp why this was appreciable then just sit there quiet or go watch something else.
After working in Navy Aviation for a career, and fixing endless wiring issues? Go find the connectors, wire spools and required tools, then a 4x8 sheet of plywood, measure out the wires, draw the wire diagram on the plywood, pound some nails in, and start stringing wires. Making a new wire harness is absolutely easy to do, and as you are experiencing sometimes its needed. Take the original wiring harness and grab a multimeter and start making that wire diagram. Might take 16 man hours....and some money, so, its difficult but doable.
As an OCD dealership technician I appreciate this defu*king of the harness so much. I understand why they did this back in the day but you definitely brought this build bacl to life.
It looks like they tried to alter the harness in less time than it took to get down the track! It always amazes me how little time people spend tidying up their wiring.
Man, seeing that butchery made me want to vomit. I've had to unf*CK a couple of my cars in the past because somebody thought they were a wiring tech. This usually involved a trip to the pick-a-part and spending an afternoon extracting a used harness out of a donor vehicle, but at least everything worked like factory.
The leaver to remove the key on manual transmission cars is for safety if you ever have to turn the key off in an emergency situation it doesn't lock the steering wheel because most older manuals are unaware of what gear they're in we're automatics if you try turning the key off it'll never go into the lock position while the vehicle is in Drive
Thanks!!
Only on US cars, cause none of the manuel cars in Europe have this!
Isn't this just a workaround for a system that prevents you from removing the key when the car is not in P in an automatic? So that you have the same steering column in both a manual car and an automatic and they make you use a manual release for the key?
@@wojciechbatog576 Just what I thought.
@@wojciechbatog576yes you are correct, the OP is wrong
Between all the fun and games, it's times like these when a complicated problem pops up you see Alex is a seasoned and certified mechanic.
It was probably a nightmare for you to do but watching you strip that wiring out of the car was so satisfying. My OCD was going nuts in the previous videos. We need Al from the Skid Factory to fly over and get it done!
Alex, as others have said. Thank you for staying true to your content. Many of my other favorite youtubers that used to be specific to cars and trucks have changed their content to boats, planes, tanks, snowmobiles, helicopters and whatever else they think will get them views or open up to a different audience. Unfortunately when they do that they loose much of their original audience that doesn't care to see that stuff. Just want to say thanks for staying true to your original content. We love ya Alex!!
Thanks brother! What you've seen over the last 7 years is what I'm into. That will never change.
Alex. I've been watching you for over 5 or 6 years now and man do I find you as an inspiration. Thank you for all the videos and showing the real deal when it comes to working on cars, not just the successes but the failures and lessons learned as well! Helps me build confidence to work on my own projects. Right now I have a 2003 Mini Cooper S gutted ready for a K24 Honda swap and a 190e waiting for an LS swap. All because of you. Love you guys. Also keep up the great work Max!@@LegitStreetCars
I can say that the smoking tire used to be good when he reviewed subscriber cars but when he went corporate, I kind of fell off.
Great detective work on the wiring. 👍
All the different things you’ve listed made my mind go directly to one person and I agree with you, doing videos on his jet boats and plane are for tax purposes only is my guess
Oh for wiring harness, no corrugated split tubing, get the fabric split loom it is much clearer and easier to rout. Use electric tape or harness tape to bundle and shape the harness. It also doesn't get brittle like a corrugated split tube.
Good call! I forget about that stuff sometimes and you are right it's soo good
I knew the borg beef board wouldn't fail us. It even added the lightnings technological distinctiveness to its own. But ignition is futile
Alex! It's Epi, Mike's shop foreman. I'm really glad to see you got it figured out. Holy moly that wiring is an absolute disaster!
If you haven't figured it out already, the CCRM (constant control relay module) is what controls the fan (and other components). If it detects no signal from the ECM, it defaults to low speed fan on, hence why the fan kicked on when you undid the relay. Great video!
Good point. I had an issue with my AC not kicking over last summer on my 2004 GT convertible and it was the CCRM module not the compressor. Once I swapped that out no more issues. Took some troubleshooting with my local mechanic to figure it out but yes good call out.
Sreten is both hilarious and brilliant. Chris with Chris Fix It is so helpful and clearly wishes to educate us. There are numerous other mechanics to mention-too many to reference here. But Alex and his buddy OJ are clearly tops. Alex has inspired me to “reconnect” with my late father who was a mechanic. I’ve purchased the tools to start maintenance on my own vehicle versus voluntarily falling victim to my dealer’s service department’s prices. Thank you, Alex. You may not realize it, but your channel is so much more than education. Nothing but love!
Hey Alex, I appreciate your commitment to your channel and your audience. It's refreshing to see TH-camrs like you sticking to their original content, especially with the trend of others venturing into unrelated areas. Your longer videos are a great touch. Thank you for staying true to us! 🎉 P.S. Max is the best editor and Camera guy
YES. These 45 min - 1 hr videos have been amazing for my nights shifts at work. Started watching him about a year ago and since, I'm all caught up and wait anxiously like a kid every week now lol
The Diagnostics you do and rewiring are actually some of my favorite videos because even most shops will turn your car away till you leave it abandoned in your backyard Till Somebody Like You buys it kind of refreshing to now this stuff can be done.
Love it when you get the weird issue and solve them. In 30+ years as a mechanic i've never ran into such an issue where a coil literally sets itself on fire. VERY interesting content.
"Beef" box😂😂
Lol, "what up dog, you got beef?!?"
"Aight, hold on sec"
Flips the switch....
Release the beef!
I prefer to get all my wiring run, and tape the wire groups/runs together every 8-10 inches, and then use the appropriate diameter split-loom, carefully taping the intersections/branches. That way, if there’s a problem later, your access to each wire is so much better. Great work on all of these projects. We are all envious of your situation. We are also big fans of your lovely wife- She’s the biggest ‘keeper’ you’ve got!
I also utilize small zip ties during the process, to maintain neatness.
Love how you take us for a proper diagnostic ride Alex. The true ups and downs of working on cars that other people have played with. It’s true, sometimes it’s easier to just rip it all out and start from scratch. Great video my friend
Alex, I am so impressed with your ability to diagnose and fix electrical problems. It's actually very educational. Thank you and nice work!
This is actually amazing back when I went to high school I did four years of auto shop for one of my electives we had an old red convertible mustang from 2000 wouldn’t show mileage, and the theft light would remain on I guess that’s what it was that little chip
Hey Alex. Great stuff.
36:43 the Manual trans have that push lever to ge tthe key out. The automatics do have it. You'll find that if your shifter is in gear and engine off you can't pull your key out unless you shift into Park so, they've built that key safe in the auto trans.
But it's probably there in manual trans car because it saves them designing a separate steering lock column for auto and trans and therefore saves them money in tooling etc.
Nothing makes my OCD kick in harder than seeing a total wiring clusterf*ck like that.
And nothing is more satisfying than getting wiring all hashed out, all the useless garbage eliminated, totally streamlined and working perfectly.
Good job Alex. You made my eye stop I twitching.
Oh, that good news to hear - I remember how excited you where when you got the SVT F150. It's awesome to see the Mustang firing up for the first time - Keep it up!!!
Great episode Alex I am a fan of the SVT Cobra, I almost bought an SVT Mustang back in the day. The 4-cylinder version. I have a 1991/92 Taurus SHO that I totaled and bought a 92 and the trans had a huge hole in it, so I swapped the motor and trans to the 92 it was basically plug and play. My Dad had a 91 Mustang LX Convertible that I accidentally swapped the ground and power to the battery and did some electrical damage. I believe I would have needed to swap the entire car harness out. I totally enjoy all of your videos and the process by which you complete the work. I still have the SHO it's in the garage with a bunch of stuff piled on it. I was to get it running again and you and Vice-grip Garage have given me the motivation to do that. Thanks for another great video!!
I hope you never sell this beautiful machine it’s a gem just like the WS6, definitely best of both worlds!
You are so intelligent with cars. I understand all you do but it would take me months to catch up. Truly a blessing and a lot of hard work in the past. Wow
You’d should’ve photoshopped that pic of you with the harnesses draped over you as a Borg drone for your thumbnail 😂
Hahaha
I was thinking at least insert it as a comparison in the video. Max is slackin!
Alex you will enjoy this one.
As far as the ignition coil, yes I had one fry on start-up. I have a c230 coupe that I m113 swapped. Bought the 5.0l out of a e500. For $300 because of unknown mileage. However, you could tell it had never leak from valve cover gaskets or from the inspection port. So I had it all installed in the car. Ready for startup turn the key and could smell fire. Passenger side bank had a coil pack that had started on fire. Which immediately kicked one of the two main ECU fuses. Replace coil pack and replace fuse. And all of a sudden it occurred to me. The reason that they never were able to read the mileage was because that coil pack had blown the ECU fuse...
Not familiar with that engine. Where is that inspection port?
Awesome! Glad to be part of your project Alex! Looking forward to helping you out on this and other Mustang projects!
Man wiring is my biggest fear and you completely tackled it and diagnosed everything down to the wire. Phenomenal job, love this channel
Love the channel, but wish you would not take ad money from PDS. Debt consolidation companies are no good. Stay away from them.
I am amazed at your level of knowledge……wiring at that level would leave me in a corner drinking straight out of a bottle of Makers Mark! 👍👍
At least you have good taste in brown liquids. Could be worse. You could have said you'd be in the corner with a bottle of the ever disgusting Rough & Rowdy, perhaps better known as R&R.
Or you could have skipped whiskey all together and shot directly for, wait for it, Blackberry Steel Reserve malt liquor... *retch*
That's one I'll never even humor. Malt liquor is disgusting enough, why give it a fruity flavor (unless you're pouring orange juice in Old English)??
Thats great Alex, I love when these projects of yours come to life! Keep on doing what you do and do so well.
I am always terrified when it comes to wiring and electronics and you managed it like a super hero! BRAVO!
Shoulda called "PAINLESS" 😅😅😂
Normally, i am not into wiring videos. Honestly, though, that was pretty satisfying watching ya rip out all that garbage 😂😂😂
I hear ya. Tough to film a wiring video for sure
Love seeing the genuine excitement in Alex's face when it fired up!
Congratulations Alex! Exciting to see her come alive!!
The secondary key release is to keep you from locking the steering column if you have to restart the car. It takes a second action to remove the key. My ‘03 F-150 manual has the same system.
Great video!
Love watching him work, he will tackle just about anything.. Excellent technical knowledge !
Alex, your knowledge and troubleshooting skills are incredible. Love watching the videos. Electrical gremlins are always challenging! Keep it up!
Alex, I love your videos! I've been a wrench turning car guy for over 30 years and your videos are teaching and inspiring me! Keep up the fantastic work! I have had a 1993 Nissan 300ZX for 23 years that I converted from N/A to TT and Auto to 5 speed, would love to see you take one on!!!
I’m so excited Alex I knew you would do this so excited for you. You make it all look so easy fearless you as always dive right in..I can’t wait to see you dial this Cobra all in and motor down the road with a smile…hey Max! Sweet!❤️❤️❤️
Hi Alex
Tape vs corrugated. From my skid factory watching I have learned that the OEM Manufacturer generally know what they are doing with wiring.
So I now reuse the factory wrap. The factory wrap allows for more movement as it is not sticky.
Tape wrapping can cause the weight of the loom on the shortest wire, which can lead to eventual wiring problems.
Corrugated tubing is sometimes used on OEM wiring so should be ok.
Awesome and outstanding. Thanks for sharing and taking us along
Love the Channel Alex!! We need a Track Day of all your cars! Obviously the T.A. will be fastest, but I am interested in the GN, vs Lightning, vs Cobra, vs Turbo Van, vs McLaren, vs CTSV Wagon, vs Whatever else you have?! 😂😂😂
Great experience following a professional at work with appropriate analysis. Loved that and your humor. Will look for the next one!
41:12 Bless you for that. There are too many nicknamed cars on TH-cam already.
Alex, love the videos. I am glad you are still showing your work on your cars. It seems like a lot are not any longer.
You are the best, Alex. I love watching you just get to work and track things down real life mechanics.
I am glad you contacted Mike. Great guy.
The smile on my face when you got so stoked when it finally started 😂 this is by far my favorite channel
This was the video I was waiting for. Can't wait to see it all come together!
Very Patriotic final shot. Red Cobra, White Trans Am, Blue Lightning. God Bless America
I always chuckle when Derek does his "Sniff Test" after installing a battery... case in point.
That wiring harness reminded me of the knot of Xmas lights in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
My answer is "Corrugated tubing which is then wrapped with electrical tape in a spare spiral along the length and tight wrapped at each end.... Adhesive on electrical tape has a rather limited life, particularly in an engine compartment, while I have seldom seen the corrugated tubing harden and crack to failure...
I got my project up and running running today. It is such a great feeling 39:58
I love it that you get so excited 😊
Outstanding Job Alex! Glad to hear the SVT!
Just a tip for taping up looms, you can buy fabric loom tape that looks much more factory and lasts!
Hi Alex I'm from the United Kingdom and absolutely love your videos!! As an engineer I love the process / fault finding / work arounds and of course the improvements to the original product that you got through. I can't wait for each new video to drop!!
It's so amazing to see you work on a car and actually find the problem and not just throw pots at it like others 🤘🤘 you rock
Regarding the corrugated tube vs. electrical tape question, I personally prefer the MB fabric wiring tape done nicely. I like the flexibility of it.
Lots of people hate wiring but i just dont. I love it. Its a chance to easily make anything go from a messy rats nest to neat and tidy.
Nice work Alex, so happy the old mustang started up. Can't waite for the next vid.
YOU'RE A DAMN GENIUS. It's so fun watching you go to town on all these previous projects that are so time consuming to figure out. I sit here shaking my head in disbelief most of the time lol. My favorite "show" out there.
I had a 95 gt 5.0 5 speed but love all the videos I watch them as soon as they come out!!!!!
Alex your content is great. Really nice to see a legit guy working on cars, love your sense of humour, keep it coming!
Another amazing process of diagnosis! Keep up the great work, Alex.
Great job Alex,So fun watching you.
So much knowledge!
Thank you Alex
Great content
Great Channel
And the Mustang is a Dream car of mine👍👍👍
Truly enjoyed this Video
So inspiring, Alex! Thank you.
Hot Damn!!!!! Job well done Alex!!!! Well deserved on this project!
I’m freaking so impressed with your assessment, troubleshooting abilities. Electrical gremlins are significant obstacles to figure out.
Thanks Alex! You're always the highlight of my weekend!
Bro, I live for these videos. I've been watching car shows for 25+ years and you are my favorite by far.
Keep it up😊
This thing is awesome. I cant wait for the lightning. And the porche. And more TA, and the DeLorean, And C4, and and and and. Your killing it Alex.
Your editing is outstanding. I loved this episode!
I like the soft self-amalgamating tape for looms, Tesa do the best one in various widths, and it pulls the wires tightly together as you wrap it, then forms a flexible, water and oil resistant covering without the gaps that hard tape leaves, especially on bends. It also has a matte finish, and was used by loom makers until they started using corrugated tube. Heat shrink at ends and junctions stops oil going down the loom and stops the tape unravelling. Oh and, yes - best not tighten up the positive battery terminal when you first connect it so you can whip it off if something starts melting!
Awesome. My favourite channel. Thanks Alex, keep it coming!
Happy you got it running, 1996 mystic cobra, 1994 first year sn95 Rio red 5.0 cobra, and my 1985 mercury capri 5.0, have a few projects myself, you help me get motivated to work on my cars thanks for the great content.
Great work Alex! Can't wait to see it in all it's glory.
Your patience with mechanics is impressive! Notv one tool thrown!😂
What tape to use? Black cloth or high temp harness tape (whatever suits the rest of the wiring) that doesn’t have glue on one side. Use “self amulginating tape” on the ends to stop the non glued tape unwrapping. By not using glued tape the loom remains flexible and doesn’t weep glue when the loom gets hot. 😊
Hardest thing is to not get excited to early. Always do your checks. Check fuel leaks. Check for electric smoke. Check brakes.
I am sure all that nest of wiring made sense at one time. Pieces added over time.
I look at my wiring from 20 years ago and scratch my head sometimes. Lol
Bro not only only are you extremely entertaining and at home on camera, I want people to remember how extremely talented and brilliant you are as a tech. Give yourself a long pat on the back Alex you deserve it bud.
My favorite car enthusiast channel on TH-cam! I enjoy seeing the process of breathing new life into mechanically challenged cars, cool or not!
You're amazing, Alex. Great job and it's great to see the 'stang run again.
The key interlock was not a manual-only thing. It was actually very common in cars from the ‘70’s to the ‘90’s. My parents had several ‘80’s Oldsmobiles, all automatics, that had that. It was especially popular in GM cars.
