OMG!!! OMG!!! Ashley. I first became aware of Nina Mae McKinney some 30+ years ago. I knew a lot of this about her but you come with some things that I did not know about but only suspected. I have seen the entire movie "Hallelujah" which was actually a good movie with a good plot and writing. The two kids pictured with her in "Pie Pie Blackbird" were actually the Nicholas Brothers. She never did get another leading role in a movie because Hollywood at the time did not know what to do with this beautiful black woman, but I didn't know about her attitude. I can't blame her for falling for the Hollywood hype because in the late 1920s and the 1930s black people, particularly a young black woman of her very young age, had not blueprint. No examples to demonstrate how fake Hollywood was and still is. I always suspected drugs and alcohol because you can clearly see in her later film appearances that she had lost a lot of that raw beauty. Plus, she died so young with little to no fanfare. I actually made contact with one of her distant relatives years ago. I have always thought that her story would make a great movie.
Oh wow! What a sad story. I remember her in the movie Pinky. I loved that movie because I'm a big fan of Ethel Waters. You would have thought she would have caught on to the game Hollywood was playing with her.😢
It’s sad she didn’t realize sooner than later the type of fame she wanted is/was hard for most , even white folk’s to obtain especially during that time …Beautiful woman RIP
Thank you for the research you did in this video. I’m actually from Lancaster, South Carolina. If it wasn’t for this video I wouldn’t have known much about Nina’s life and career. Just the little information I googled awhile back. The only thing that’s dedicated to her here in Lancaster is a mural on the wall next to the courthouse. (Which I feel could be a better picture after seeing the photos shared in this video. She was beyond beautiful and that mural doesn’t do much justice). We never learned anything about her in school. If they did I don’t remember. So it was Great to see someone actually do the work to tell her story. I truly enjoy the way you tell stories. Very Entertaining!!!
I agree with you 100 percent ! I've seen the mural , and its a crying shame that she has never received the real credit that she deserved. Nina and Dorothy Dandridge had similar paths and also, the movie Hallelujah reminds me of the movie Carmen Jones.Thank you Ashley!! You did it again- Perfection!!
#SaySoSquad! Thank you so much Ashley for giving us another video. You have truly gotten a lot of us through this pandemic. Nina Mae McKinney, and this is why I love your videos Ashley because you shed light on people who have often been overshadowed by bigger stars. Looking at Nina's photos in this video, to me she favors Debbie Allen in the 70s. Seems like Nina didn't have a mentor or friend to get the low-down on Hollywood and how to keep herself in check that way her career would've have gone further had she had some guidance and humbleness. Like Stepin Fetchit, another star ruining their career with their ego.
Glad to know more about her. I am also glad that Paul Robeson showed up in this video. I went to Paul Robeson H.S. in NY many years ago but the name has changed. Can you do a video on Paul Robesob?

Baby Esther was a singer who was the real model for Betty Boop! She even appeared in a Popeye the Sailor man cartoon as a black cartoon but later was forever changed to white! The creator, Max Fleischer, created the character Betty Boop from watching baby Esther perform and even stole her scatting singing style of the"Boop poop pe do!" She asked him to compensate her financially but he refused and she never got any of the millions that character made over the decades!! So sad and unfair!!

Another Wonderful Job - Girl you can tell a story - it is just a gift that your have
Until you described The Movie.... I forgot how Good... Hallelujah was... I'm a fan of Vintage movies....Chile ..you done made me pull up the movie lol.... You be getting me all hyped up....your commentary makes you visualize what you're talking about... Your Awesome Sis....Peace and Blessings.....✊🏾
I'm curious about King Vidor's "research". Did he listen (or had someone else listen) to all of the church gossip? I have a hard time believing that the preachers would admit anything to a complete stranger.
MAAM please repost the Clive Davis one!!
I swear I was going crazy looking for it and it looks like you took that down!! :(:(:(:(:(
This was an excellent video !!!!!!
Would love to see Hollywood give Ms. McKenney her propers by honoring her with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame if she doesn't presently have one.
Thanks for introducing me to someone else I’ve never heard about. Loved it 💗☕️
Outstanding Ashley as I've said you need your own Podcast. Awesome story keep it up.
Nina and Dorothy Dandridge had similar paths and also, the movie Hallelujah reminds me of the movie Carmen Jones.Thank you Ashley!! You did it again- Perfection!!
Wow! Keep these coming Mrs. Ashley! Your videos, storytelling and humor are mesmerizing!
Another great job Ashley! Your growth and confidence as a storyteller are shining through. Can’t wait for the next episode.
Love you Ashley! Thanks for ALL of The work that YOU put in for US !!!
I love your videos 💕 I was watching unsung episodes of some of the people you did and was like yep I knew that cuz Ashley said so 💕
😂😂😂🤣😂😂😂 I be saying the same thang!!!!
Glad to know more about her. I am also glad that Paul Robeson showed up in this video. I went to Paul Robeson H.S. in NY many years ago but the name has changed. Can you do a video on Paul Robesob?

Miss Ashley stay getting these sponsors!!! Get it, gurl!🤣🤣🤣🤣👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
This is so fascinating. Absolutely riveting! I'm such a fan of Nina Mae Mckinney but didn't know about her personal life. I feel huge sympathy for her as a talented, beautiful black woman whose talents were suppressed because of racism. Thank you so much for the research and the eloquence.
Every time you post I get so happy 🥺😭
Me toooo.lol
Thank you for this download, I have heard of Nina Mae McKinney and I have seen her movie Hallelujah, but I was not aware of other facts about her . This is information that should be shared.
I love the way back stories. I seen her on a video with the Nicholas Brothers. She was soo pretty🥀. She looks like the inspiration for Betty Boop.
Miss Ashley, you be on yo' game, baby girl...when I peep your videos, I always have a bag a chips and a beer or two or three...no shade. I love your stories.
Lol thank you Laurence!

You REALLY know how to tell a story and hold attention. This is coming from someone who finishes other people's sentences to rush them or most frequently I just zone out and walk away. I look forward to hearing more of your entertaining take on entertainment.
