When Harry tells cybil :I'm just a tourist,I just got here" u can feel the unknown of the area you are about to explore snd its craziness witch builds tension, something silent hill 2 failed to do because james been there before
The low-res PS1 graphics only make this game better. It gives everything a nastier, nightmarish quality. Akira Yamaoka's sound design work was much weirder and atonal with this first one, where later he went with more melancholy sounds and outright rock for the music. As much as I love his later work, I really like the weirdness of this one-it's more Lynchian.
That build-up that starts when it gets dark and rainy, and the sirens sound, the soundtrack getting more cacophonous to the point of sounding like an ominous, pulsating heartbeat. Work of genius by Team Silent and masterful OST by Akira Yamaoka. Not to mention the build-up before this, that starts when Harry catches a glimpse of "Cheryl". This is one of the GOATS of survival horror.
This looks fantastic, but this must be the European version. The knife-wielding demon children from the opening and school are changed. They were a lot scarier in the American version, not only in appearance but the truly unsettling sounds they made.
still dont know why I hear people say this has the least replay value in the series. Love the original and I think its even more fun on a second or third run. In a series of titanic entries, I feel like this one stands out for its charm and the risks it takes to establish the incredible tone that the rest of the series expands on in each entries own way
I agree. Even the combat was a lot more agreeable, and on easier difficulties you're basically never without plenty of ammunition for at least one of your guns -heck, on my first playthrough, I had somehow managed to miss picking up the hunting rifle and I STILL never ran out of pistol and shotgun ammo simultaneously. The story was also a lot "cleaner" in my opinion. No faffing about with cults, drugs, or anything else for any amount of time to where the game definitively spells out what was actually causing all of this... It actually made Silent Hill a silent character in itself -descriptions and vauge hints dropping constantly, but never insulting the intelligence of the player. Your job is to get the crap you came here to get and get the heck out of dodge. It doesn't drown you in exposition as a direct consequence of not constantly leading you by the nose either. They don't make them like this anymore. For goodness sake, is it too much to actually have some mystery in our mystery horror anymore?
Real easy for people to pick apart a game many years later. But if you were older teenager, young adult when this dropped. It was a complete game changer.
0:27 It's a small detail I've always liked even when I was a kid. That " *..what the f*ck* " look on Harry's face when he notices his daughter is gone is a very convincing detail. You can see the panic and confusion(mainly in the eyes and his brow) translated very well with the limitations of the PS1. The facial expressions in this game's FMV segments were ahead of it's time.
That would nearly be a whole new game comparing today's hardware to back then. The only issue would be foreign studios destroying the art of this series for a quick buck.
Great playthrough, really enjoy your content. Your shorts are really well done and I tip my hat to anyone keeping the Silent Hill content coming in on a regular basis.
I watched the whole thing. Great gameplay! I’m just getting into the series and it’s been nice watching. I wish they made a steam port so I could play myself
Hey!! 90's girl here! Actually, 1993. I played pause to write. I've seen your shorts videos, and I love that you're mentally broken and f*cked up by Silent Hill just as I am. I'm 30 years old, and my dad used to play it in front of me, we would solve the puzzles together idk, maybe i was about 8 years old. But that game truly, and really, changed me!!! Trauma, forever 🤣 (in a good way) 🙄 But anyways, im gonna continue watching this. A lot of people here are commenting that they have not played in a looooong time. Well, im a gamer. Only Silent Hill and Resident Evil. Dont try to tell me more! 🙅🏼♀️ I'm from México, I live in the beautiful city of Mazatlán beach, betch 😏🏝️ so if you're looking for some PAR-TAY, and some good seafood, this is the place. Also, a really good hostess 👱🏼♀️ (me). And when i got my ps3, the first thing i did was go to psStore, buy this game and play it over and over and over again. So i kinda feel bad for the ppl here that say they havent played it for like, 6 or 10 years, or whatever. (Sorry if my English is not perfect right now, im a little tipsy 🤪) but i thought i knew all the secret passages, all the history, etc. but then i watch and watch Silent Hill Walkthroughs, and im like "dude, you dont know shit" 😂 but yeah, i had to upgrade my ps3 to ps4 now, even though i really didnt want to. And i can't get Silent Hill 1 anywhere. But now somehow i got to you. And you're bringing me a lot of nostalgia and joy, and at the same time, you know, im so fucking scared. Im all alone in my room watching this. I wish i could play it 😔 for the 123453782836.53'th time!!!! Anyways, hahahahaha ok, enough chatting with myself. You probably wont even notice me. But thank you ❤️🔥 SHFOREVER

This and Resident Evil, the only enjoyable part of my childhood...my cousin gave me this, Resident Evil, re2,3:Nemesis and Koudelka..I remember getting the crap scared out of me, multiple times, that and the puzzles..
As a kid when I saw "Moore, Ranaldo, Gordon...this must be a list of teachers" I flipped out because yes, Sonic Youth were teachers of the highest order.
It's like a Japanese David Lynch. Right down to the soundtrack and insanity. And people doing inexplicable things, like a cop giving away their gun to some dude they don't know.
I still remember, the monster in the beginning use to giggle, how come they replaced it with a growl? It was more scarier when they giggled for some reason lol
Which emulator did you play this on, and could you provide the settings? I’m using Duckstation and noticed any overclock above 330% breaks the game when using the flauros against Alessa. Then the next cutscene with Lisa breaks with even the smallest amount of overclocking.
I do know that with Duckstation the game may crash at certain points if PGXP Culling Correction, Geometry Correction or the Widescreen fix is enabled. Try playing around with these and see if the issue persists.
The goat 🐐 the og. My first survival horror game, I fell in love with the series every since. I enjoyed most of the games for the most part except book of memories. What a disappointment I bought a vita in anticipation.
I'm so hoping this game to be the next remake... they will have much much more freedom to do things and this will be the real challenge! just looking at the cutscene at the coffee shop i can already telll they can do so much more... because right there, at the beginning, Harry acquires almost all the items he will need the entire game (a map, a gun, the flashlight, the radio, a knife and some medicine) a remake could make we work for each of those items!
I remember as a kid renting this not knowing what I was even renting. I was VERY excited, this era brought about a lot of cool games. I wish we'd get a remake of Tecmos Deception games!
Huge fan of the OG. I often tell folks that Silent Hill 2 has the better story that sticks with you, but the original is way scarier and shouldn't be skipped.

I believe they started remaking it. But they couldn't mimic the camera angles with good graphics and character movement. Harrys movements dont look right and the game is wayy less scary without the graininess and low fps.
There are certain games that impact you in a way that can't ever be recreated. Doesn't matter if they are remastered or remade the original just hits different-takes you back.
I sometimes wish I was born a decade sooner than the 90s this game is one of the reasons why. My parents never would have let me play games like this because I was under age. Now if I want to play this game I have to get rich or hope for a remake.
Less is more. This game feels like your playing A faded memory of a nightmare you had.
That's an almost eerily accurate description.
A memory of a town. And the memory’s fading…

indeed, the Grey Children (knife wielding demons) were removed from the European and Japanese versions and replaced with Mumblers

@@G0thCrayonsuffers graphically however. Sh3 while not subtle whatsoever definitely made up for it in sound design and the actual horror itself.
