Episode 9 : More Sand, Hot Air, Zebra Salami

After skirting the edge of the Namib Desert, the other desert in Namibia apart from the Kalahari which we have already touched a small part of, we arrive in Sesriem. This is considered to be the best place to experience this part of the Namib which is a sea of massive dunes that stretches out to the coast. At 81,000 square kilometres the Namib is large, stretching from South Africa, across western Namibia to Angola but its not the worlds largest desert. Its reputed to be the oldest and very dry, dryer than the Kalahari, making life for animals here hard and for people traditionally impossible.
The attraction of Sesriem is that the Tsauchab River, in a vain attempt to reach the ocean, has swept a sand free plain deep into the desert before it runs out of steam (water?) at a place called the Sossusvlei. This allows relatively easy access into the sea of dunes. OK Geography lesson over!
We are scheduled to take our first hot air ballon flight and things are not looking good. Its as windy as. After that we plan to hop in the trusty Toyota and drive out to the end of the valley at Sossusvlei and then walk to the very, very end, a place called the Deadvlei. And in Afrikaans 'dead' means 'dead'. You'll see why.
