You might try something like this: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B088PJ38YP
Then just go by color codes, or pre-print (laser, not ink jet) something that you commonly come across in the panels. You could also use to label work you've done on new installs with your company info.

really i feel it comes down to if your competent and you all clearly are competent electricians and if you want to use a multifunction tester to prove voltage then crack on if you where a 1st year apprentice with no clue how a tester works probably not a good idea 😂 shouldn’t worry about stupid comments 👍👍

Jordan. The standard of your work is exceptional and the way you document it in your videos is excellent and as a non electrician I really enjoy it. You have taught me so much and as a keen diy’er for the past 40 years I thank you very much. As for the complaint you received all I would say is that whilst technically the correct procedure was not followed it must be accepted that a competent person should be able to use an alternative safe method as indeed Cory did. That is why we have “skilled” people. These are people who are sufficiently experienced and qualified to make those sort of judgements and be able to assess the risks etc. In your particular case as an experienced person Cory was quite capable of ensuring that the multimeter was set to the correct function before carrying out the test. As someone who spent 45 years in the aerospace industry which of course is highly regulated I do feel that sometimes procedures dumb down the job to a point where in some cases a “semi skilled” worker could be used but of course good procedures should ensure a level of consistent quality and safety.

Just because industry is making foolproof testing gear does not mean those who are using the gear are all fools. Taking down a video because of not using a foolproof test method is in my opinion ridiculous.

Of course you can't do everything perfect. No one can. And showing mistakes makes you genuine and real. And by the way you are showing us how you work in a vlog form. You don't claim that these are instructional videos and they should not be treated as such. In my opinion the complaining viewer should have never called. It's not like you made a mistake in the official safety tutorial.

Personally I wouldn’t be worried about Karen’s comments. Your videos need to be watched in the context of the channel, which has very clear messaging on safety. While a mistake was made, you addressed it through education and by making sure your employee had the right tools... a very positive and mature approach. How you run your business is down to you, and it’s a business that I would certainly be confident in using. As for cable tags, perhaps Karen would like to step forward and provide their insight and wisdom.

I think the HT lettering is intended for telecoms and data fibres in external footway boxes. Waterproof and non-fading. (This is my speciality and I use them). Try 3M scotch labels. Put a dynamo tape label on the sticky side then wrap around wire. Ideal for internal labelling.

Many label makers have a "serial" mode, so you can tell it to print numbers from say 1 to 16 with just a few presses. Do that while having it print cable labels. Repeat this several times. Separate the numbers into small baggies. Now you're always prepared with labels. Have the intern/apprentice do it if you have one, or next time you're stuck on the phone with a supplier who insists on wasting your time, just print a batch or two out. This is what I did when I worked in telecom, and it made my life a whole lot easier.
An alternative would be to print them as you need them and use meaningful names for the labels but most label makers are a pain to use so you probably don't want to do this.

We use Nalox( anti corrosive) for connection , especially if Al wire is in use. I use it for all breaker connections. Nice vid. The idea that everybody needs to do everything according to best practices, ignores reality and the disconnect( pun intended) of perceived perfection. The only people who are perfect, are dead, perfectly dead.

Non of that kit when I was an apprentice,it was an old BC lampholder and a 15W pygmy lamp and a couple wires !! I bought my own Drummond test lamp whick of course still had a pygmy lamp fitted...I remember asking the boss for a Avo minor and could they take a few pence a week from my wages !! I was the only appretice or spark in the company with my own AVO ! maybe 30 plus guys on the tools.
Somewhere I still have an AVO 8 somewhere,I think it is a MK4 or 5

I’ve just decided to peruse a change of career and I’m in the process of completing level 3 and intend to carry on into inspection and testing. Your videos help people like me and I’d like to think i will pick up things that will be of use. Ignore the keyboard warriors. You demonstrate real life scenarios which is also helpful. Don’t be disheartened by negative comments.

I complete agree with what you said about the safe isolation Jordan it’s so important, I guess the person that complained has a good point. The thing that can be taken away is that at least Cory did at least attempt a safe isolation to prove dead even though the device he used was not GS38 approved. I agree that you shouldn’t take it down as it shows that you are promoting safety

5 Niceic Qs assessments and 1x Napit assessment. Never been told off for using my multi function tester to show safe isolation. They understand things are different in the real world compared to an educational environment. If you was doing an educational video I could understand maybe. But your videos are real life. Definitely no need to take it down.

It’s good to show mistakes cause you learn from them and so can others. If you address them as you have done then that’s fine, no one is perfect. if you show every single step every single time it would make for boring videos best to vary them but talk about what you have done. Love the content as it is.

If one was competent enough to not use GS38 approved testers then I don't see the problem, just be aware what you are doing and as long as you are in control and competent to do it that's fine. There are more things to worry about than little things like that

Fantastic tip on drilling through conduit.
Cory on using an approved voltage tester, can you add a subtitle to the original video to turn it into a lesson.
Cable markers (if you want use mainly numbers) check out Cablecraft. An alternative that may work better in the domestic world is the heat shrink tape for a rhino printer, you could pre print a batch of cooker, shower, GF Ring etc etc.

P.S. Just mark cables with marker pen, or even faster, bend cables into the first letter of the circuit E.G. 'S' for smokes or 'L' for lighting. Then whip them as you terminate to straighten.

That old board was pretty nice, click-in mcb’s and all, but no rcd protection at all other than that single rcbo circuit? It looks either too new to not have whole house RCD, or it’s super advanced for its age. Feels weird.

He who hasn’t failed has never tried!!
It is so easy to analyze footage and pick fault and I don’t care who you are and what you do there is no way everything can be perfect all the time. Sometimes the best way to learn is to learn from a mistake - hopefully without getting hurt of course. Keep the footage real, if it creates a discussion and someone can learn from it then how can that be a bad thing.

Hi, Jordan first and foremost I love your videos and look forward to watching them as I am probably the world's oldest apprentice aged 57. I passed my City & Guilds in 1987 15th edition lol but never went on to use it much as I joined the forces and when I came out became a Financial Adviser but am now doing my app again which should have been done now but the pandemic has set me back loads with training etc.
Anyhow I thought I would ask who you have your income protection with I'm assuming you do have some? as Im an expert on income protection and on my travels (including my new bosses cover with Nappit ) I have had to change many peoples, workers, tradesman covers as they did not understand the cover that they had bought and at a claim, the policy would not do as they thought it would do. therefore leaving them exposed to no income etc.
So if you would like me to look at yours and advise you properly then I will as I have checked out the cover you are suggesting with Rhino and its not that good etc for income protection.
So if you or anybody else reading thos wants a true policy that will pay you out and do what its meant to do then please email me at johnmcfadden7@gmail.com.
Keep making the videos as they help me a lot thx John

Thank you for showing me how to do this job well Jordan. The idents are easy on cables that haven't been stripped- it's honestly quicker to cut the ends off and restrip. OR ream them open a little with the body of a small screwdriver. You wont get better than hellerman.

    • @kitermike5955
      @kitermike5955 3 ปีที่แล้ว

cut- ident - strip is faster than heat shrink+labels. You will get much much faster at them after a few hundred or so.

I wouldn’t worry too much about people who have the time to call your office to have a moan about a video they watched on TH-cam Jordan. I know you have to be professional in those situations but part of me wonders where their TH-cam channel is if they’re so perfect. Nice tip using the conduit off cut as a shroud for the sds bit too 👍🏼.

I enjoy your content. I have a voltage tester and a MFT. Sometimes I check for dead with a multimeter too. I know it's not the approved way, but sometimes that's life. I have done it for many years and will no doubt continue to do so. I'd like to think I have the intelligence and common sense to not lick two fingers and use this as a test. I consider any test better than no test at all.
The the haters hate. They will never do anything else. 👍
