Sometimes, a game doesn't need to be super good to be fun. It just happens to have tons of charm and quirkiness, and that keeps you playing, putting a big dumb smile on your face. Enter MAGMAX
I remember as a kid, watching Mad Max the movie (which I thought was somehow related to this game) and going "wtf? but where is the giant robot? this is bullshit".
I remember my folks presenting me with a copy of this game for my crusty old ZX Spectrum back in the day. It was INSANELY hard. And that version had a bug whereby you could load the game up and it wouldn't put any enemy sprites on screen. Which turned it into little more than a leisurely walk.
This game was the second game I actually ever owned on nes. I remember my mom bout 2 games. I had to choose one and the other went to my brother. I chose mag max because of that awesome cover.
I remember renting this from the video store as a kid. The weekend belonged to Mag. I had no idea what the game was called. Thanks for the video and stay awesome.
Fun review, it really does have some of the best cover art of the NES era. I think it could have made for a cool Xbox Arcade remake back in the (more)recent days. I ts very easy for me to see Magmax presented with Omega Five- esque graphics.
The Magmax cover art is everything in the 1980s in a nutshell. Also, it is surprisingly good, if not near perfect, port of a 16-bit arcade game, and it was also made for a system that only had existed for three years. Let me say that again, it is an 8-bit game that looks and sounds like a 16-bit game. I also remember having fun playing this game as a child on my cousin's NES (I never got a copy of it for my own, strangely enough) one day for hours on end and then I watched an episode of Spenser for Hire (I was a weird kid with a surprisingly grown up taste, that, and anime was not really a thing in western Tennessee) after I was done taking turns with my cousin on that game and R.C. Pro-Am I.
Oh man it had been a looong time since I had tried Magmax before watching this vid. Since it I've been playing it a lot again. Wish I had a Laser Hasselblad.
I'm glad you reviewed this one because I found it kind of ....ehhh.... and there were no dang reviews I could find on it at the time god that was already like 5 years ago!!!
I remember renting this game back around 1990 at a mom n' pop in Russell KY; pretty fun...wait a minnit, do I have Mag Max? looks at list-nope actually that was Mad Max NES. I think I would prefer Mag Max!
This was a game I used to rent all the time as a kid! Been struggling to remember the name for the last 20 years--no joke! Thanks for reviewing this Mark! I have to hunt it down.
Her Sir Mark! I been seein' Mag Max the poster on your fine wall always in your fine videos. I used to rent this game from Pop-In-Go Video back in the good old days! Been wondering when you'd review it! Must've been staring you in the face too? Jolly good show! p.s. Be Kind Rewind. xD
Magmax is my biggest story of buying a disappointing game new upon its release. It was a lot of money for me back then. I took a chance on it, and it sucked. It was repetitive within an hour, and didn't have replay value. That it's largely forgotten now is no surprise. A relief maybe. Though why should I feel ashamed now?
Yesterday I was watching this review on my ps4 while doing some bicep curls and in the beginning when you were talking about his parts with the robot sound then went to vacuum was fucking funny.
Madmagmax should then be released for the Sega Genesis, or the Sega Saturn. Actually, the Saturn is a 2D powerhouse, let's wish it for both then. And a version for the Vectrex, of course.
I think this game is a really good example of "Cool" doesn't equal "Good" You can enjoy something for being cool even if it isn't good, but well, when it comes down to it, it just isn't good >w>
magmax is infinitely better with mark's digitized robot voice. :P someone get him on as part of an HD remake of magmax! fun shooter I had it on NES back in the day!
When I was a kid I wanted this game so bad because the artwork made it look so awesome. It was kind of disappointing once I finally played it. I mean it's not the worst game by a long shot, just mediocre.
My cousin sent me this game when I was a kid. The artwork is cool, but the game itself is extremely simple and repetitive, and you can see everything the game has to offer within 20 minutes.
Mag Max, starring Meb Gidson!
This is why we love CGR.

I played this game when I was child. It's not bad!! Fun to play.
Your videos have such a charm to them. Like 80s and 90s anime and soft drinks that are still made in glass bottles
but its kinda sad his channel doesnt grow alot
Probably because it has an aesthetic that only appeals to us.
Yes it's true I find many many youtube gamer vlogs very annoying and so obviously desperate for likes and subs NOT THIS GUY!.

I remember a friend getting this as a birthday gift back in the day and I was the only one who liked it. Very funny review!
This is one of those games you buy, because the cover looks cool. Then you play it, and you're like "WHAT THE FUCK?!"
Yeah but you go "wtf" with a smile! At least I did.
Yeah I wasted a game purchase on this, sigh
Tod Harris Same hee...

You only go WTF if your taste in games is boring.
This definitely was my favorite game as a wee babby, and to my two year old mind the main character has always looked like a steam iron.
"There's something threatening about robot seahorses"
for all its short comings...there is certain amount of charm to the game. Label art is insane dope
Possibly the best CGR review ever

OK, now I am truly jealous of your collection. That poster is so cool.
I used to play the heck out of the arcade version! Superfun
Love playing this when I was a kid :D
I loved playing this game when I was younger but forgot it's name. Thank You!
played this game as a kid. was awesome.

I loved this game in my childhood. Never got far though, I had only had it in one of these bootleg 99 NES in one GBA game cardidges
You gotta play the Arcade version Mark, you'll love it.
Never heard of this one, but it looks like a fun game and i WANT THAT POSTER!!
So crazy! Was just playing this!!!
Mark, I love that you said "Monster Zero" instead of King Ghidorah.
Hey Mark, this review had me laughing out loud several times! Great video man!
dude that artwork is clearly inspired by the Gundam Rx-79 look at its red toe feet and shield design with an eyeslot lol.
I only remember this because a friend of mine asked his dad for a Mad Max game and got this instead. Lol, he was so pissed.
Omfg, I have been looking for this...fooooooorever
I used to play that game all the time.
Oh man it had been a looong time since I had tried Magmax before watching this vid. Since it I've been playing it a lot again. Wish I had a Laser Hasselblad.
I used to love this but had it on the Amstrad CPC
I'm glad you reviewed this one because I found it kind of ....ehhh.... and there were no dang reviews I could find on it at the time

haha, I played this so much back in the day. I think my dad must've gotten it from a bargain bin for me
Funny that you mentioned Mad Max because Mag Max always made me think about Mad Max. :-D
it's like megazoid xevious and zaxxon had a baby.
This was a game I used to rent all the time as a kid! Been struggling to remember the name for the last 20 years--no joke! Thanks for reviewing this Mark! I have to hunt it down.
I played this game allot back in the day, it was on a pirate multi card game.
Does this mean MAG MAX will get it's own CGR comic?
Who else remembers seeing the magmax poster advert in marvel comics in the 80s
The only thing this robot is missing are butt lasers.
I feel the exact same way about this game!
i bought that game because of the art!!! Damn it!. It does not end!!!
TAM PAX!!!!
I need a Magmax tee.
I remember a different song playing for some reason
I've had this game since it came out. and was wondering when someone was going to do a review on this weird unusual gem.
Awesome classic :)
Seeing MagMax and Mad Max side by side at the video rental always confused me, enough so that I never rented either.
There's actually an end to the first level? lol
it's Karnage time!
nice

Man, I wish owned a laser Hasselblad :(
That logo looks real suss. Looks exactly like a Gundam.
Is that necessarily a bad thing, PopulateTheMoon?
...He's got le-egs.. and he knows how to use them!"
I had more fond memories of it, well should not have googled it up after ages.
you get to fight magmax in abodox. the boss before the last level
But weren't the things in xevious invulnerable?
It's almost like Terra Cresta except side scrolling ish.
Back CGR on Patreon for ad-free, early access, extended Hyper Reviews at? like crapcome does good boy
Yawn another CGR hater.
I rented this from pic a flic and never returned it. I'm a rebel....
I had to try very hard to remember the name of this game. This was God awful hard. It's hard to keep the full form throughout the game.
wow it's not to often you hear a good review for magmax lol
Magmax isn't even in the same league as the autobots :p
I am so envious of that Magmax poster. I grew up playing this.
Ok for shooter from early nes, but it would be way better if you were 3 head metal dragon....
Radical

Your taste in games must be boring if you think this game sucks. I’m sure Jeremy Parrish would approve of your biasedness.
Love the MagMax electronic voice
I used to play the game on the arcades... It looked and sounded better.
a support from Porto Portugal....awesome
atari when??
Oh ok maybe same song but speed up
Dude I remember this!!!
I owned this one. it has a special place in my childhood memories
I use to play this in the arcades
I played the crap out of this as a kid. That music is nostalgic overload
Magdmax xD
can you do a review of the saturn port of sotn?
Yesterday I was watching this review on my ps4 while doing some bicep curls and in the beginning when you were talking about his parts with the robot sound then went to vacuum was fucking funny.
I beg to differ- the Atari game snnnnake had superior cover art
Madmagmax should then be released for the Sega Genesis, or the Sega Saturn. Actually, the Saturn is a 2D powerhouse, let's wish it for both then. And a version for the Vectrex, of course.
great game, great vid. Keep rocking the fucking world Mark!
I'm fine with Terra Cresta which feels like a top-down version of the game (since it was made by the same company, Nichibutsu).
Why do you now have two Atari 7800s?
More importantly, why am I even bothering asking? I should know better than that at this point..
I think this game is a really good example of "Cool" doesn't equal "Good"
You can enjoy something for being cool even if it isn't good, but well, when it comes down to it, it just isn't good >w>
I don’t know what drugs you’re taking.
magmax is infinitely better with mark's digitized robot voice. :P someone get him on as part of an HD remake of magmax! fun shooter I had it on NES back in the day!
Not a bad game, has a lot going on. I need to dust it off and give it another go.
I'm guessing that this game isn't as good as truxton
When I was a kid I wanted this game so bad because the artwork made it look so awesome. It was kind of disappointing once I finally played it. I mean it's not the worst game by a long shot, just mediocre.

Yawn
So what Mark is basically saying is that he has a foot laser fetish?
to me this was a robot maid walking an invisible dog, very ugly game lol
I want to be you.
just found a old copy in my closet
