  • www.tonyleeglenn.com - Here is a detailed test of Dragon NaturallySpeaking version 11.5 software. Here's a link to an updated test of version 12.5 for home: • Dragon NaturallySpeaki...
    I have a Southern Appalachian accent, which is a bit strange for voice recognition software to negotiate. This short demo however, shows that Dragon NaturallySpeaking version 11.5 is up to the task of translating the text that I throw at it. So good news hillbillies, you don't have to develop carpal tunnel syndrome. SPECIAL NOTE: As of October 2015 I've also tested Apple's native voice recognition software running on the El Capitan Operating System (decent results) - see the test here: • Apple Voice Recognitio...

    Hi Tony. I searched on "Dragon talk to text" and this youtube video was the first hit. OMG, it was meant for me!! I grew up in Morganton and currently live in Claremont. Like you, I've tried talk to text software in the past with very little luck. Thanks for testing with our unique accent! I ordered it before your video was finished.

    This video was exactly what I was looking for. It is amazing how this software understood you as accurately as it did with your accent. I'm completely impressed. Thank you for making this video. I am totally sold.

    Thanks for that, Tony. I just bought the latest version, but have not opened it. It's nice to see that the regional dialect selection works pretty well. I'm an Atlanta born southerner who lives in Alabama. Add to that the fact that I'm 65, and you know it's going to be a challenge, but I think it just may work out. A shout out, too, for the Adobe Premier videos. I'm just beginning to us Premier and After Effects, so keep the tutorials coming.

    Hello Tony Lee I just want to thank you. After I watched your youtube video I decided by the software, and it works like you said I'm glad I came across your TH-cam channel.
    I'm actually using the software now to leave my comment, again I you want to say thank you keep up the good work thumbs-up.

    All right. Glad to see a fellow Appalachian colleague on here!! We played Mitchell all the time. I went to Mtn Heritage way back. Bville!! Lived in CA for 23 years and back in Aville. Doing some podcasts and really want something to transcribe but looks like sending the audio's to transcription service will be my best bet. Keep up the good work Tony.

    Excellent demonstration. I have a MS southern accent, and it's amazing that there are so many speech recognition software programs unable to transcribe a southern dialect. Normally, I would have to speak like a college professor to be recognized, but that's not my natural speaking tone. But after viewing your video, I feel like it's time to go back to the Dragon Naturally Speaking software. I had no idea this software had improved so much.

    Actually when I did this video I had only done one 10 minute training session. Now that I've been using it for about 5 months it's pretty much spot-on with my accent. The software watches how you correct it. For instance if you speak a co-worker's name "Kristine Roberts" and it types "Christine Roberts", then you manually type Kristine, the next time you speak her name it types it correctly. I allowed the software to read my emails and contacts, etc. and that greatly helped too.

    WOW ~ I just ordered Version 13 Premium right before I saw your video. I'm impressed. I'm a New York girl all my life and if you asked me, I don't think I have an accent, but others who don't live here, say I do ;)
    - THANK YOU for doing this!
    - I know that the software now transcribes mp3s on the PC, hoping it will do MP4 as well. If not, it's easy enough to pull MP4's into Camtasia and save the Audio to mp3. That's still beats me doing the transcription myself, which would probably never happen!
    - THANKS again for taking the time. I was glued to the screen for the entire video! GOOD JOB ~Roz Fruchtman

    You made my day - I never thought such software existed and, yes, you have a wonderful accent. Although, as I actually do live in Southern England my accemt is rather like Prince Charles - I am not sure that the software would pick it up unless it has a posh setting. Many thanks for an enjoyable demonstration and light-hearted video.

    Hello- thank you for the demo and review. In your experience, how does the Dragon NaturallySpeaking 11.5 work for dictating code, bulleted notes and mathematical expressions?
    Many thanks!

  • @tonyleeglenn
    @tonyleeglenn  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The way it works is it waits for you to pause before using punctuation. For instance, if you say, "during this period I lost 20 pounds" it doesn't type a period. If you say, "during this period I lost 20 pounds (pause about a second) period" then it types your sentence and adds a period at the end. Same holds true for comma, space, question mark, etc. It uses context to know when to allow punctuation. It works well too.

  • @tonyleeglenn
    @tonyleeglenn  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sure glad it worked for you. Take some time to read those little usage tips that come up when you launch. Really helps you make it more functional. I'm getting better and better with it - you will too.

      I love the Bronx - truly. I used to work for a tour company and we were doing a tour that went from Manhattan up to Hyde Park. The crazy bus driver I had thought he figured out a shortcut that didn't go across the bridge to get up there. He took us straight up through the Bronx till we encountered an overpass the bus couldn't pass beneath. I was the tour director and had to walk behind the bus to beg cars to move aside while we backed the bus up for two blocks to turn around. I was called many many things that day. It was terrible during the ordeal, but I laugh my tail off everytime I think of it now. Also got to see a few awesome Yankee's games up your way too. Hope the Dragon works for you brother! Thanks for watching my vids.

    Yes. It works really well if the person doesn't have a pronounced accent. I used the audio from a video recording of my CEO to create a news article several months ago. Dragon recognized probably 90% of her words - event though it had not been trained to understand her voice.

    It's nice to see this video. I am young Electrical and Electronics Engineer who was thinking this morning of doing a project of voice recognition. Any improvements that I can contribute? Can we add artificial intelligence to the system so that it recognizes all of the accents?

    I need it for navigating webpages, scrolling up and down a page and selecting a hyperlink within a page. For example newspaper article with lots of links, how do you tell it to go to that link? There are links embedded in the article, there are ads, there are sidebars with links and icons which link to other sites/articles, there are lists of links down below the article, right down to small font links at the very bottom and there are menus with sub menus leading to different sections of the newsite and a searchbar for searching the site. There may be 50+ links on one page. How do you tell it to go to a particular link? (it may just be an image that is a link with no verbal description).

    And to answer Chris Thomas' question...I spoke "during the Jurassic period" and it did pick up on spelling out "period" and then I ended the sentence with "period" and it got that. But, you can't say "new paragraph" without getting a new paragraph. I guess you would have to type that in, manually, which is always an option. I can't think of a time that I would need to dictate "new paragraph", but that's just my line of work.

    I like the idea of this software because it seems like you could create a long-drawn out paper in no time just by speaking it. But as robust as this software is, it seems like you have to go over the finished product with a fine tooth comb to find all the misinterpreted sentences it put together.

    I have used tried every version from #4 ( including their .5 versions). I brought, but haven't installed version 12. I too am using 11.5. The differences in the later version, from about #8 is that it will allow you to use without going thru the long raining sessions. I've found, if I go thru ALL of the training videos and upload docs based on how you think/compose
    There were a lot of competitors in the early days...but haven't seen many lately. As Tony stated, the more you train it the better it gets.
    Does anyone know of some one who have used/tried the pro version that a designed for career ( i.e. Medical, Legal, etc.)

So for example, in Photoshop i want to adjust Levels: Can i just say: "Image-Adjust-Levels"? Or "Control-L"? Also, can it invoke commands with more than one modifier key? Such as "Control-Alt-Z" to step back in history? Thanks, Tony!

      Hey Kevin - sadly I have to admit I've never tried it with Photoshop. Mostly I use it for typing lists of keywords and text for web sites. I'll give it a try and report back to you.

      Seriously, Tony, if you would i'd really appreciate it. Just to know if there is a straight-forward way to access menu commands. I have a Cintiq, and it only has so many assignable buttons. It would really help out to have that extra help. Merry Christmas!

    What is the difference between Basic vs Premium then Mobile and Wireless versions? there are too many confusing packages with a significant price difference.
    What would I miss in Basic as opposed to Premium that seem is ten times more in price?

      With the Premium you can save a voice recording on your phone or other device and then at a later time, load the files and have Dragon transcribe them. With Basic, you cannot do this.

    You'll be getting version 12 which is actually noticeably better than the version 11.5 that I review here. Be patient with it and train it up and you'll love it. I tried it back at version 8 and it was just awful. I'm guessing it didn't get 75% of what I said. Let it read your emails and documents (not a security issue) and it will recognize proper names and places that you are associated with too. It's cool. I use it every day. Still not perfect though. For me I'm guessing about 95% there!

    Not being a native speaker, I actually found this software quite hard to use, at least to begin with.
    I wonder if you get this wonderful smoothness right from the beginning, or after lots of teaching?

    You have to avoid um eh and those other thinking word place holders. The program does awesome. its and is was the only problem I saw, and where it completely ignored "um" Thanks for the review.

  • @tonyleeglenn
    @tonyleeglenn  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hmm - I guess you'd want to do that if you were like writing a book about how people in the south talk. You can easily create a custom library and add words, then associate them with your speech, so I guess yes. Post a video somewhere with the words or phrases you're considering and I'll do a video to test it.

    There is meant to be a new premium 13 which is accurate straight out of the box, is that only if you keep using it online? I mean does it need the web to update it so it will be able to keep accurate or can you use it at 99% accurates straight from the box without being online or use by the web? also I see it asks you to register online. and how much of a difference is the accent list going to help us, should i stick to a standard english?

    • @tonyleeglenn
      @tonyleeglenn  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't tried 13, but have the 12.5 home version in my home studio. It works just great. You can download updates from online, but I don't think you HAVE to. Mine steadily improves its-self by analyzing my recordings and the way I correct it. I still don't know that it's 99 % accurate - more like 95%, but that still saves you a lot of time typing. No clue about an accent list. All I know is that the Southern English module did vastly improve my results. TLG

      @tonyleeglenn  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Almas - It might be sort of hit and miss. I've tried doing the same thing before by putting our CEO's voice from a video speech into Dragon. I'd say it was about 80% accurate, mostly missing because of wind, additional noise, and the fact that the software had not been trained to recognize her voice. Still, it got enough of it right to really help with the transcription.

    Actually the headset that cam with this software did go bad on me. I bought another headset from Walmart for about $16 that works just great. I don't know about another mic, like an SM58 for instance. In theory I think it should work. Just whatever gets a good quality vocal signal to the soundcard should work.

      There is a medical version of Dragon that we used to use at Blue Ridge Healthcare. It was much more expensive than the package I'm using in this video. I'm not sure what the docs are using now. We still have a crew of transcriptionists who probably polish up anything the voice recognition misses. I have no clue how the VR can handle all the accents, foreign and domestic. I'll ask what they use next time I'm over in Medical records.
