One Handed Keyboards

  • Imagine if you had to use a regular keyboard, but could only use one hand. It would destroy your productivity and your sanity in no time. I had a commenter ask me about options for people who could only use one hand, and since I knew very little about the options, I had to do a bit of research. There are options for a range of tastes and wallet sizes of course. I can't say which is 'The Best' as I don't use my keyboard one-handed. If you do, then please let me know in the comments.
    Here are some links to the boards seen in this video. The Ergodox is available as a kit from quite a few places, and appears on Massdrop fairly regularly as the Infinity Ergodox. The Let's Split is available from a bunch of sellers online.

    I had a stroke several years ago now, in 2009 to be exact. I at first taught myself to type on a standard QWERTY keyboard one-handed, but this caused serious carpal tunnel. I now exclusively use the left-handed Dvorak keyboard layout. The good thing about this, I don’t need a special keyboard. Since the layout is controlled in software, any keyboard will do. I can currently type at about 60 words a minute.

    For anyone who is gonna ask I was the one that played osu! at the end :P I wanted to get the play fast but I usually play HD instead... the reason I'm in the video is because chokkan asked me to record it for him so I did since I love his content. Love to everyone and especially Chokkan for making the video

    I use a left handed maltron pretty much exclusively. Other than the keyboard being very VERY light (I built a 5 pound base to lock it in place) it's been a workhorse for over 12 years for me at this point.

    If anyone else had a stroke and has left side paralysis. These are all so expensive it really prices people who need them out. My wife had a stroke and that’s already a bunch of medical expenses and then her options are 1) don’t type fast, or 2) drop $500+. We need some better options especially for left side paralysis. Fortunately because of gamers the right side paralysis has some better options. The best idea I saw was installing right-hand Dvorak keyboard and learning that since you don’t have to buy anything just switch the settings in your regular computer

      I have been using the Tipy keyboard for over a year now. I have this left side paralysis and was devastated that I cannot type normally anymore. But Tipy is fantastic. I think it’s the best option and will ultimately conquer the market because it’s just ingenious.

    • @pyramidus

      I can confirm. This is the best option. Either for left or right hand. I am a woman and I don’t have super large hands but I can reach all the keys. And slowly, but surely I’m getting better and faster. Just recently discovered that the best way to learn this thing is to just do it.
      I started with exercises of different letters but just trying to write texts with upper and lowercase et cetera I start remembering all the keys now. And if I were to practice more, I think I would already be up to my old speed. What more do I want? Also, it’s not super expensive and they are already shipping into the whole world. I totally support this company. 👍

    i really do have just one right hand to use... resulting in a very high rate of typo's with little speed .. hopefully people like you can help ... it is so frustrating when you use one all day in and out ... Thank God for spellcheckers but speed sometimes is of the moment due ...

    I lost all practical use of my right hand 20 years ago. I use to type 90+wpm. Now, it's a snails pace....

    I've been kicking around various ideas for a one handed keyboard. I'm thinking something like a handgrip from a joystick controller with several thumb controlled switches around the top and then not just a single trigger control, but triggers for each of your fingers. Combinations of keys could give you more letters than actual switches. It might not be as fast as the ones you show here, but it would be much smaller and therefor easily portable.

    • @Chokkan
      @Chokkan  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That'd be cool to see. Let me know if this becomes a reality.

      +Steve Smiff Oh hey, that does look interesting. I guess it didn't come up in my research as it's not mechanical, but neither is the FrogPad.

      @@Chokkan I own one. This is a really working solution. Of course, it is slower than a standard keyboard, but it allows you not only to type with one hand, because it allows you to type without a fulcrum: standing or while walking

    I remember seeing this guy on desktority with a project for the one handed keyboard. He seemed to make a pretty good one with the standard cherry switches, small form factor and lots of functions to make it practical. I can try and find it if it's interesting for people to do something similar.

    Nice Video! I was thinking about one hand keyboard. And I looked at my Razer Orbweaver. We could try to replicate the FrogPad with the Orbweaver. There are 2 buttons that could be used as a "layer shifting and 20 mechanical keys".

    • @Chokkan
      @Chokkan  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Diggerfdf That would be really cool. I'd love to do it just for fun. I sometimes look at that FrogPad layout I made on the layout editor and think about a handwired build. The Orbweaver ported to QMK would be cool too. Actually someone on the QMK Gitter was taking about that just the other day.
