  • Peter Schreier boy alto. Dresdner Requiem (excerpt)
    Rudolf Mauersberger, composer and Kreuzkantor.
How doth the city sit solitary, that was full of people. All its gates are desolate. How the stones of the sanctuary are scattered in front of all streets. Hath he sent fire into my bones from the height and let it prevail. [.. .] is the city of which it is said that she was the most beautiful, who rejoices the whole country? "
Peter Schreier made his first operatic appearance in 1944 as one of the Three Boys in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte. In 1945, he joined the Dresden Boys' Choir (Dresdner Kreuzchor, the choir of the Kreuzkirche or Church of the Cross.) Eleven choir boys perished in the firebombing of Dresden that year, so the surviving boys and teachers lived in a cellar in the outskirts of Dresden. Choirmaster Rudolf Mauersberger noted Peter's musical talent and strong alto voice. Mauersberger assigned many solo parts to Peter as first alto and even included in his own compositions parts for Peter, including the Dresdner Requiem. Recordings of Peter were made from 1948-51 until his voice broke at age 16. He made his tenor debut in 1959, became highly successful, retired from the opera stage in 2000, and from performing in 2005.

So sad to learn of the death of the wonderful Peter Schreier, whose singing I have loved from the 1970s. I was married to a British man who had a grandfather who was also born in a town in Saxony and it was nostalgic to visit both Leipzig and Dresden during the early 2000s. May Peter's soul R.I.P.

Thank you very much for making this video. About 25,000 people died during the Dresden air raids in 1945 which were meant to destroy the whole inner city. As there were 2 raids in the most devastating night, people couldn't start to extinguish the fire which then turned into a huge fire storm that swept everything away. Let us all make sure that such atrocities never happen again.

As an Brit and a Christian I am ashamed of the way my country reacted to the criminal bombing of British cities (and Guernica of course ) by the Nazi Luftwaffe. Jesus taught us "love those that hate you and the bless those that curse you" That is so hard in times of war. Dresden was a revenge bombing. I am told that we were very afraid that the Nazis would invade the land and do to us what they did to other countries. But the firebombing of Dresden and the destruction of Nagasaki and Hiroshima were inexcusable. I regret also that they did not bomb the railway lines leading into the places where so many were executed, starved and gassed by the Nazis. Let us hope and make sure that there is never again a war between our two countries.

      Donald,
nicely written about your reflections and thoughts,
_and do you have any comment on Peter (the singer) and Kreuzchor in the background?_

Donald Edward Today we know that all wars ARE bankster wars. We must stop them fomenting wars by not participating, not helping to make the weapons they sell to both sides - paid for with usury loans they make to both sides, the 'winner' told to take on the debt of the 'loser' AND to pay reparations to the 'loser' (so they can rebuild for the next planned war). You must know the names of the most (in)famous top bankers. Read about them. Or search on an engine or yt "all wars are banksters wars".
If the videos haven't been disappeared as so many truth videos are being, the zeitgeist series is informative.
Not only them. You should also read about the venetian black nobility.
The devils in disguise. Doppelgangers in every race.
We can have no more brothers wars. No more wars at all if we do as Iceland did in 2008. Worth reading what they did and how they did it, too.

The firebombing of Dresden just proves that in warfare, there are despicable people on both sides. Thanks for reminding the world of those who were killed for absolutely no good reason.

Dresden was a crime against humanity.
May all the spirits that perished in the burning flames of bombing fire be in peace now.
Because of their sacrifice Dresden will remain the Holy City of Mother Europa.

Sadly enough, the “mere 25,000 deaths” undoubtedly is a very low estimate; for tens of thousands of refugees had just arrived in Dresden for safety knowing that the city was not a military target. It is certain that many of them died. Had the city been totally empty of humans at the time of the firebombing, the destruction of the city itself would have been a tragedy.

What unarmed civlians go through in times of war is tragic. Yet we still tolerate bullies like Putin and Erdogan who threaten their peaceful neighbors in the mad hope of reconstituting the defunct empires of the past.
