    My late uncle David spent his last working years a distribution engineer for the UK Midlands Electricity Board. There was always something boyish about him and I know he bloody loved his job. Watching this, it all makes sense :-)

    Just wait for this to pop up in everyone's recommended video list like two years down the line. Pucker up for comments like:
    "WHO'S WATCHING THIS IN 20XX?" Or
    "Less than 60 seconds long = epic" Or some other generic TH-cam comment like that.
    With that out of the way, this was pretty neat.

      Funny how something so short can be called "epic" when poets from a couple centuries past were writing poems about fallen heroes, courageous leaders, or powerful gods. Those poems, which could be thousands of lines long and filled with 15-syllable sentences, were called "epic."

    That's a lot of angry pixies. Interesting thing is I don't think the part you see is the actual switch it's more of a visual indicator, it does carry some current, but the actual switch is in a vacuum or oil below it. At least I think that's how it works.

    • @nicholasw7451
      @nicholasw7451 ปีที่แล้ว

      A little late, but what is being shown is the actual disconnecting switch. All that's below is the structure supporting the switch and the operating mechanism. There do exist switches where the electrical contacts are insulated in oil, but the whole point is that the contacts are submerged in a higher-than-air insulating medium.

  • @inothome
    @inothome 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Shouldn't those arcing horns be making better contact so there is no arcing in the main contacts as they roll out? I know it's not going to damage it per se', but the horns aren't doing shit, they weren't even touching.

    • @willclark1038
      @willclark1038  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Believe it or not, they do touch the base rod all the way till the arc breaks. They do exactly as they are designed. The arc should always break on the horn to rod, not switch arm to jaw.
      Great observation though, 👍

    • @inothome
      @inothome 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@willclark1038 Thanks, I work in substations too. I wouldn't expect so much arcing if they were touching and usually you'd see the rod move a little as it moved out or in. Plus when the switch closes you can see the arcing between the horn and the rod on that middle phase, bus side. Anyway, not looking to argue, cool to see more substation videos on TH-cam. Work safe and post some more substation videos...

    • @gorillaau
      @gorillaau 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ummm. What do you use to energise the circuit? Another switch? I suppose you could use a explosive disconnect but then you need to replace the fuse that you have blown up.

    • @NoHeartAnthony
      @NoHeartAnthony 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The circuit breaker has already been opened. This disconnector will be used for making physical isolations. The arcing is probably stored energy in the busbar

    • @thoreberlin
      @thoreberlin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is just arcing of the remaining capacity in the short switched off line. A disconnector can't handle any load, but ensures safe insulation levels for working in a specific section.
