    I work at an OTF (4+ years) and I agree with everything you said in this video 100%! Walking is just as good as running, you get out of a workout what you put into it, take rest days, it’s ok to sandbag it sometimes, and don’t beat yourself up. I would add that the benefit you get from the workout is NOT related to how many splat points you get; all fitness trackers (Apple watch, OTF Burn, Fitbit, Whoop band) have a variance of error and that can be different for every device. The HRM, the tablets, the Tanaka formula- all of those are just tools and our species did just fine without them for hundreds of years.
    You should be focusing on the adaptation, the signal, that you are sending to your body, not the stats. Focus on developing your skills and form in the gym, don’t rush through a set or rep just because the template says you need to get to the rower. Five quality reps are always better than 20 crappy reps, power walking with no pain will always win over running 2+ miles on a bum heel, correct rowing form always beats how fast you get through 500m; a quality Coach will tell you this. Benchmarks are good for testing yourself and setting goals but there is a progression that needs to be respected and it’s human nature to want everything all at once. Time is your ally but a limited resource, use it wisely!

      @@mrsnikkii I no longer work for an Orangetheory, I coach at a functional strength and sports conditioning facility after 5 years. During my last year I saw the company get further away from coaching to the individual and instead they began coaching the technology instead, which can be wildly inaccurate. If you like OTF, cool, just remember to listen to your body, not your device. Burn the fat and feed the muscle by focusing on strength and mobility over cardio by starting on the weights or rower first, always!Cardiovascular conditioning is important but not for adding and keeping lean muscle tissue.

      Cross fit training is good for some but not others. Some of us would be better off running 2 miles... Hell I run 3 miles and feel great because of it. I don't like to feel rushed working out. For me volume not just heartrate matters so its not something I'd be interested in

    1000% agree with walking. I started Orangetheory after running my 2nd marathon. I continued to run at OTF. A couple years later, I had minor surgery on my foot and when I went back, I couldn’t run at first, so power walked instead. To my surprise, the workout was AS hard and the results were even better! Incline does amazing things for your a$$ 😜 I never went back to running

    I actually had a morning class booked today, got ready, and found out my husband took my car to work. I did call them, explained my circumstance, apologized, and they were so cool about waiving the fee! So I definitely think it’s worth calling to see if they’ll work with you!!

    Such awesome tips! I felt like you were speaking directly to me when you mentioned that walking works! I've also been that person who has always been pushing to run instead of walk. I'm also a huge fan of not going the hardest every single day when I know I want to go to the gym again tomorrow. Thank you for your tips Andrew! They were golden! 😍🙌🏾

    Great hacks! You are so right about walking and consistency! I've been going to OTF for over 4 years and see so many of the newer members get into the mindset of going all out, maximim effort every class. But why do I need to wear out my body when science shows that does not produce improved results over time? I do get frustrated that OTF places so much focus on runners and totally does encourage "graduating" to running as if PW is for beginners. If I get my heartrate up, who cares? That's the point of the cardio! Also, incline power walking is great strength training. I wish my studio posted the leader boards for PW for the tread benchmarks. They can really make it feel like PW are second class citizens sometimes. You put it perfectly that it's not better or worse, it's just a different type of cardio.

      Right! I’ve been a “runner” since I started OT but as soon as I switched to inclined PW I’ve started seeing the results I’ve been waiting on.

      Agreed! I play adult league hockey and after years of wear and tear from skating, my knees just can’t handle running as much anymore so I’ve been doing the incline power walking at my OT classes and I’m finding my heart rate still gets up there, I’m sweating and breathing hard, and my legs seem to get a strength training element from the steep incline. It’s helped my game on the ice so much!

    Woo woo to power walkers!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 love seeing that other ppl know that it is very beneficial and it does build great body resistance.
    I gotta try calling in next time I’m feeling sick. But lately, I’ve been adding classes last minute so I don’t need to worry about if I did have to cancel last minute. It’s happened a few times cause I get sick a lot 😅

    Andrew, this was so good and I feel like it really shows how much you've learned in the past few years. Especially the tips about not pushing yourself to pain, being okay with walking, and shooting for consistency rather than intensity.
    Also - 100% on hell week and stuff being just about the merch. I imagine for some people it might provides extra accountability, too (like, "I paid for this so I better do it")

    I used to be a runner years ago, then I got into biking and then I stopped. I've been on a long hiatus... years. I would like to run again and not feel like 911 will be called on me. I've never been good on the treadmill it gives me an awful disorientation and vertigo feeling so for now I "power" walk and hope soon I can pick up running but it's good to know I am putting equal effort as the runners!

    All of this is Subjective. I did OTF for almost three years and I was in my mid Fifties. Workout modality is very different based on age. I would consistently out work 99% because of the people my age because my objective was INTENSITY. I will admit, I'm a life long athlete and I had a slight advantage over most people my age. Ultimately, I left OTF because I already worked out with HIIT style workouts at home, so I felt I no longer needed to measure myself against others, which was the reason I joined in the first place. It was motivating to compare my fitness to those younger than me, but in the end, I knew ( and still know) how to motivate myself.

    The late cancel thing also works if you show up late and tell them why you couldn’t come they’ll remove you.

    Been a "walker" for years. Got 2 pedometers just in case. Walking is the most underrated exercise a human can do and its fantastic. You can walk forever. You're mind will give out on running (thinking about doing it will ultimately make you say, "not today") long before your body. Walk my friends, walk.

    As always, awesome Andrew! (And, yep... you're right about the merch! You probably remember there wasn't always a buy-in for each event, just some, but heck, OT kept bringing us FREE workouts online during the pandemic, and even after studios started opening again, so they need to recoup somewhere! And, if we don't pay the buy-in, I think the owners have to eat the cost of the shirts, and that's not fair.
    OTF is pricey, and I'm very frugal, but membership IS valuable and worth every penny... so I've only done a pay-in for Hell Week the last two years... I have a shirt for participating every year I've been a member (joined July '17, so this will be my 6th shirt) so I can't stop the streak now! That HW swag MEANS something! 😁)

    RE: Challenges and merch. I found that out but with the Transformation and Marathon month they give the extra prizes for top finishers. That’s a bonus for me.
    Also, the coach’s energy and enthusiasm makes a big difference. My home studio is walking distance from home but I travel to another local studio because of the coaches. They check in with the attendees throughout the class and that’s a difference-maker for me

    This was good info- there’s a ton of Orangetheory gyms in Chicago, but I’m way to intimidated to go. Also, you look great- you can tell everything you’re doing is making you feel healthy! 💪🏻

      Oh you should totally go. I went to one south of Michigan Ave in downtown and it was the nicest most welcoming crew. At least do the free one, be a power walker and go get your burn on 🧡

    I was going to a new Orange Theory and couldn't find it. It was inside this alley area not visible from the street. I called and asked could I be moved to the next class because by the time I get a park and get to the door, after they gave me directions I would be late. They told me they wouldn't charge me and like 2 months later they charged me, so this one is hit or miss!! Shout out to my home studio OTF Alameda!!! Whoop Whoop!!!

    How do you already have IOS 9? I don’t have the option for HR zones on my watch and it looks like the iOS update won’t be out until late September

    Andrew, thanks for the OTF hacks! I just joined OTF yesterday and was inspired by some of your other videos. I did purchase the heart rate monitor but I would like my Apple Watch to display the heart rate zones you described in this video. I'm sure that I'll forget to bring that monitor at some point. Anyways, how do I get to the settings to get heart zone rates to show on my watch? Appreciate the help!

    Today I hit 400 and I’ve never late cancelled 👍🏻👍🏻 I was a PW before my knee replacement and now I use bike. Still such a great workout 🥵

    Been going to OTF for six years, also important to lift HEAVY and SLOW. I see too many members race through the weight part and you get no real strength benefit from weight lifting fast.

    Haha yeah I’m not that stoked on the hat we are getting for marathon month (I never wear baseball caps except for when I’m watching my Giants!) but it was good motivation for me to get those miles in.

    I 100% agree about the online communities! I’m a member of a few and for the most part everyone is super encouraging and friendly.
    I’ll admit that while I know the some of the challenges are definitely a “money grab”, I always participate in Hell Week because I love the shirts, lol 😂

    100% on the challenges - I'm still salty that the hat from the 12 days of fitness last year is too small for my head! Save your money if you aren't super into what they give you for participating.

    I don't even do OTF anymore but I can't not watch these videos!! I miss it but I spent so much $$ on workout equipment during quarantine so gotta make the most of it but live vicariously through Andrew and the Fat Tuesday Fam.

    Hi,
    Ive been doing OTF for about a month mow. I noticed my last two workouts that it was taking longer for me to get out of blue/green zones into orange .I do have a small meniscus tear in my right knee so cant run. Im a power walker. Im guessing the fact that its taking me longer is a good thing. That I’m building strength, endurance

    Heart Rate Monitor hack is no bueno my friend... It's not just for you. It's for the coach. It's about allowing the coaches to fully do their jobs.. Really what makes Orangetheory ... Well... Orangetheory!

    I love that orange glow in the background. I tried a colored fill light but it’s just not powerful enough.
    Sone great hacks here Andrew, fun video.
    Calling instead of getting a Late Fee use to work until this video 🤣 Joking of course. I think if you have a good excuse the smart studios won’t charge. Their motive shouldn’t be making money off of cancellations. But yeah if the class was full, waitlisted as well and I call right before I totally get being charged.
    If you don’t use a monitor then you won’t get the stats in the app, to me that would be a bummer but I bet a lot of people could care less so great advice.
    Walking is for the cool kids 🧡 I don’t know if I’ll ever run at OTF again, I’ve hurt myself too many times now and the workout results really aren’t any better.
