Thanks, great video! Might be worth noting that it's possible to store your favourite filters in a folder called 'Faves' and there's a 'reset parameter' button per filter that allows you to reset a given filter's controls - which can be useful if you make big adjustments! 🙂
I've used G'MIC in both Gimp & Krita. Will install in Affinity. Very extensive & very powerful. It does use a lot of RAM & processor power. That's because certain filters are actually doing a huge amount of work. Often well worth it. I usually use curves instead of levels to get black & white (or do anything else). Live adjustment layers make this very flexible.
I couldn't be there live. It was a great programme. I learnt some things about G'MIC that I didn't know and hadn't paid attention to. If anyone could figure out how to get 2 layers into G'MIC in Affinity, it would be you. I suspect that's probably only possible in GIMP, if at all. Thank you!
Dear Trent, I tried to instal the Win11 version of the files without any success ( seems to be a different version or specialy built for ARM systems?) With the version you selected it worked fine. Thanks :-)
Great to hear, Stefan! Yes, it can be tricky to know which version to install. In Windows, if you search for "About" (or go to System -> About) you can see which version of the OS and which processor type you have.
Hi @drwatsonismine, I think the Transparency Tool is just in Designer. But you can achieve the same effect in Photo by using a mask with a gradient like I show in the video. Hope this helps!
@@drwatsonismine Also you can open documents saved in Affinity Photo in Designer and still use the filters and effects that were added in Affinity Photo. So, alternative would be to open the afphoto file in designer.
@@TechnicallyTrent Hi Trent, the alternative that may work better is opening the afphotofile in designer. Especially as you can still modify, copy, duplicate and filters only found in AP such as compound masks, luminousity masks whilst using the afphotofile in Designer itself and saving the file doesn't strip away the masks not in the designer application.
Trent, I installed this plug in exactly as you recommended and it only appears greyed out even on a pixel layer. The help menu does not help nor does the Affinity forum. Restarts do not help either. It simply will not activate on any pixel layer I try. I've got a cutting edge system. Not sure if others are having the same problem.
Hi @Bob-The-Guy, sorry to hear it isn't working. There's only 2 things I can think of: - Did you download the file that matches your system architecture (x64 vs x86 vs ARM)? In Windows, under System Information, you can see your system type. - In Affinity Photo's "Edit -> Settings -> Photoshop Plugins" menu, did you check the box for "Allow Unknown Plugins to Be Used"? Other than that, I'm not sure what it could be. Unfortunately, it may simply not work with certain systems based on drivers, graphics cards, etc... Let me know how it goes! Trent
@@TechnicallyTrent I figured it out. This plugin does not recognize an image that has been converted/changed into a pixel image. It will only recognize a native *.png or *.jpg image. It doesn't like any image that was placed on top of a New Created white canvas. You must simply Drag & Drop your image file onto an empty blank space. Do not use New...then it works fine.
@@Bob-The-Guy Interesting. It works for me with converted images, but it is definitely possible that maybe it doesn't work on some systems for some obscure reason. I'll make a note of this in the next livestream!
I got an error dl32 file and I proceeded, then it, the photo affinity, kept crashing. I tried to repair and reset in settings and it still keeps crashing. I’m going to reinstall the program and not use this plug in.
Hi @mikeallen4231, do you have a Pixel layer selected then you try to use the tool? If the selected layer is an Image layer (or something else), it will be grayed out. If you hover over the left side of the layer in the Layer panel, you can see what type it is. If it is not a Pixel layer, you can right-click on it and choose "Rasterize...". Just make sure you understand the implications of rasterizing. You can see my Pixels vs Image layers video for that: th-cam.com/video/nnWYKxkamJ8/w-d-xo.html
@Bob-The-Guy so what i did was i had to make a new pixel layer then go through the steps on the video...not sure if starting with transparent background makes it not usable....hope that helps

Thanks Trent! First time learning about GMIC. Great demo! 😃👍🏽

Hi @jktolford8272, thanks for sharing your experience.
And yes, Curves are definitely another way to enhance black and white.
Used Gimp in the past and gmic as well but that was looong time ago, didn't realise there was an affinity plugin. Thanks for sharing / demoing!
This plugin also works with the Linux version of GIMP. I would pay good money for Affinity to work on getting this working with Mac.
Thanks. Installed. Works OK. in 3D you can create a depth map (grayscale) for use in masking layer adjustments/filters etc.

Is there a transparency tool in affinity Photo also? Or just Designer? Thanks so much for the Q&A portion of these LIVE streams.

Hi @milicentart, sorry to hear that happened to you. Have you tried just deleting the GMIC plugin files to get Affinity working again?
Still can't get this to work...still grayed out in plug-in list

Nothing for Mac which is disappointing.
Hi Cyril, I agree. MacOS is based on Unix, so I think porting this type of tool should be possible.
Try it on line, only problem is file size is limited to 5mb
