      A little fun fact that's cool for Portugal but a bit sad for the world in general is that the Portuguese flag is the only one in the world to feature a scientific instrument - the armillary sphere. Don't get me wrong, I think the flag is hideous, breaking basic rules of heraldry and good taste but the one good thing it has going on for it is that symbol which is so connected to our History.

      To be fair Lisbon and Porto are older than most cities in Europe because no one know exactly when they where actually founded. We only know that both where founded by Celts so probably in the same time frame of the Greeks ones. Lisbon was caled Olisippo and Porto was caled Calles when the came Romans the aded Portus (meaning Port to the name). The diference is that after the Muslims invasion of the Iberia peninusula in the VIII century the Porto was aboned, beign refunded int IX century by Vimara Peres and was for that city that name Portugal come to be

      I am Portuguese born and lived there for almost 17 years and moved to Montreal, Canada (now living in Vienna since 2012). I can just tell you that Portugal will embrasse you and make you feel welcome. People are humble in general, they love to communicate and socialize (even in supermarkets, hehe). In general kind people with big hearts who love life. Of course there are little glitches, but hey, name me a country that is perfect ! with romantic towns, incredible coast (some will make you feel like you are back home). As a language tip ... the hardest thing at the start is the "sh" sound you hear all the time. This is mainly the sound of the plural in words which most of the time is created by adding an "S" at the end !!! Ex: House = casa and Houses = Casas (but the end of casAS sounds like casaSH). Rule of thumb....
      I wish you a wonderful time and savour the food and wine. If you also want to see great green land, ocean life and more, pass by the Açores Islands. It will make you feel back home too !

      Sorry, with over 500 replies maybe somebody already clarified the issue of names but I just can’t read them all. It is not that there is a book of names that cannot be used. It is the other way around: there is a book of names to bemused. This for two main reason: to protect children from crazy parents and to keep Portugal Portuguese. You can however apply to give a different name to your child, but you must provide a reason.

    We have those names or equivalent in Portuguese: Tom is Tomás, Emily is Emília and William is Guilherme ;)

    • @wnnr3294
      @wnnr3294 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The William one seems very odd. The names might have the same origin but they're so different from each other. It would be like saying you can't name your son Jacob or James because we already have Tiago and Diogo. This list should definitely be rethought

    • @guinass
      @guinass 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@wnnr3294 No caso de William penso que se trata de um equivalente que tem origem no significado da palavra em si. Como as origens das línguas são diferentes fez-se uma adaptação.
      Encontrei isto. Se tiveres paciência:
      “Na verdade Guilherme não provém do inglês William, mas sim do alto alemão antigo Willehelm, ou seja, willeo (vontade, determinação) + helm (capacete, proteção), algo como "protetor determinado" ou "protetor resoluto". William veio, então, indiretamente do alemão, mas através do francês, língua que teve, sobretudo na era medieval, grande influência de línguas germânicas, mormente do ramo frâncico. O primeiro William famoso da Inglaterra foi justamente o normando de língua francesa Guilherme I que invadiu e conquistou boa parte dos reinos da Grã-Bretanha, estabelecendo séculos de predomínio normando francófono na maior parte da ilha.
      O normando manteve o som /w/ do francês antigo, de modo que uma provável forma inicial Willielme >> Willialme se transformou no francês normando Williaume (houve muito, nessa transição, uma vocalização do /l/ para /w/ assim como ocorreu mais recentemente no português brasileiro). Daí, é fácil ver como Williaume se tornou William ao ser adaptado à fonética dos falantes do inglês.
      Já o português parece ter tido a mesma tendência do italiano e do francês parisiense a acrescentar um /g/ antes do /w/, talvez porque não lhes vinha tão naturalmente a pronúncia de um ditongo puro com a semivogal /w/, nesse caso /wi/. Logo, ela depois de um tempo passou a /gw/, ou seja, /gwi/.
      Não sei dizer se o nome Guilherme evoluiu no português diretamente a partir de sua origem germânica ou através de um intermediário românico como o francês (atualmente Guillaume), mas eu apostaria na segunda opção. Seja como for, penso que a forma atual da palavra sugere que o que ocorreu foi basicamente esta evolução, não necessariamente nesta exata ordem de mudanças sonoras:
      Willehelme > Willhelme > Willelme > Güillelme (o /l:/ prolongado provavelmente foi se tornando um lh, uma aproximante lateral palatal, nessa época) > Güilhelme > Güilherme > Guilherme.
      Uma certeza, no entanto, podemos ter: Guilherme certamente não veio do inglês William, senão o que seria de se esperar seria um nome bem diferente.”

    • @wnnr3294
      @wnnr3294 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@guinass Sim, eu entendi o que querias dizer. Foi exatamente por isso que usei o exemplo que usei. Os nomes Tiago e Diogo (que é apenas a forma espanhola de Diego) são derivados do nome espanhol Iago que por sua vez é derivado de Iacobus que é a forma latina do nome hebreu Ya'qov (penso que seja assim que se escreve).
      Da mesma maneira que este nomes evoluíram para serem os nomes que são hoje, também Jacob e James evoluíram para serem os nomes que são. A meu ver, a não ser que pesquisem a origens desses nomes, difícilmente veriam similaridades entre eles enquanto que nomes como Emily e Emília são fáceis ver.
      Em geral, acho que essa lista falha um pouco ao excluir tantos nomes estrageiros. Há muitos filhos de imigrantes que por nascerem cá não terão a possibilidade de ter um nome que os ligue a essa cultura

    *Proven facts about Harry Potter + Portugal :*
    Indeed, the writer of the books gave English lessons at the University of Porto also married a Portuguese man that got divorced after domestic violence, she wrote the 1st pages of the book here in Portugal, after one interview she said that the library everyone says she got the idea for the stairs that move is wrong, she confirmed that she never visited it but that hold like to. The most thing alike with the Portuguese culture is the "suit?" they use in the school of magic in harry potter that's almost equal to the "suit??" that is used at the university she gave english lessons, the architecture is also obvius.

    The name list thing is a little misunderstood. Portugal doesn't allow those names because they are the Anglicised versions. Portugal already has the variants and equivalent versions of those names. Emilie or Emily is "Emilia". Thomas/Tom is "Tomás". William is "Guilherme". John is "João". Etc.

    #20 about the names restrictions. We do have, name restrictions as we are still a conservative country. But the name restrictions are for two main reasons.
    1) To protect the dignity, of the borns child from crazy fathers. You can't give unrespectable name to your chiled.
    2) If you are Portuguese, does not make any sense, you pick a name that has nothing to do, with your ancestours . So picking a foreigner name, when you don't have anyone in your family, from that particular country, dosen't make sense.
    Other than that, you can register whatever name you whant.
    However before that restrictions took place, there were people with strange names, that became family names,that survived over the years, to the present.
    We have, as family names "Camelo" means Camel. "Carraça" means Tick
    "Feio" means Ugly.
    And so the law took action...for registration porposses, but did not forbithen those polemic names that allready were used!!!

    • @joanaguise1645

      Yeap! The allowed names list is updated time to time and it's a very long list. If you are from another country but live in Portugal and want to name your kid a name that is not on the list, you just need to request a document from your embassy/consulate, stating that it's a name, then you can use that name.

Sure, it could be more popular, but it is not unpopular, even by a stretch. Good video tough, keep up the good work.

    Well, why would a Portuguese person give their children the English names you mentioned at minute 13:42 -- Emily, Tom, and William -- when there are Portuguese equivalents of such names: Emilia, Tomás, e Guilherme?!
    And, besides, there are way more than 10 first-names per gender. Not every male in Portugal is called João or Filipe; and not every female is called Maria. Those are just stereotypes!

    • @miguelcoelho3877
      @miguelcoelho3877 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @M C That is where you're mistaken. Guilherme is the Portuguese version of the German name "Wilhelm"! In Portuguese, just like in French, the German double "V" was transformed into "Gui" in the early middle-ages. That is the reason why William/Wilhelm is "Guillaume" in French, and "Guilherme", in Portuguese!
      Portuguese is the official language of Portugal, and it should be kept that way!
      What I do find interesting, however, is that you follow the vlogs of a Danish couple who praise the Portuguese people for maintaining their traditions -- which should include keeping the Portuguese first names, well, Portuguese -- but you seem to reproach us for doing that. How strange...

    • @miguelcoelho3877
      @miguelcoelho3877 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @M C Look, I am not going to debate you on that. I've clearly pointed out to you the reasons why in Portugal people give preference to baptizing their children using Portuguese Christian names.
      I don't make the rules but I agree with the general consensus on that!
      Besides, I don't think that there is an imposition on foreign parents to baptize their children using only Portuguese first names. And there are plenty of Portuguese names that are exactly the same as (or close enough to) the English, French, German, and even Russian ones: Rita, Paula, Irene, Isabel, Ivone, Inês, Isadora, Clara, Laura, Leonor, Luisa, Emília, Amália, Amélia, Daniela, Teresa, Julia, Sandra, Alexandra, Claudia, Carolina, Patrícia, Beatriz, Catarina, Cristina, Joana, Susana, Ana, Alba, Alberta, Alice, Adelaide, Antonia, Linda, Graça, Natália, Hilária, Hilda, Brígida, Brita, Bárbara, Raquel, Diana, Helena, Flora, Filomena, Madalena, Mariana, Marina, Margarida, Filipa, Marta, Sabrina, Olga, Olívia, Sofia, Edite, Elisa, Eva, Matilda, Josefina, Jacinta, Felícia, Virgínia, Vanda, Roberta; André, Paulo, Tomás, Vladimir, Alberto, Alfredo, Gustavo, Henrique, Hugo, Rodrigo, Roberto, Martins (I don't pretend to know them all...)!
      A name is something that stays with you all your life, not quite like a Pizza.
      If you're so keen on "exotic" names you can always go to Brazil and call your kid whatever you like. Bala Perdida, for example!

    • @miguelcoelho3877
      @miguelcoelho3877 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @M C FYI, the last part of my previous comment was written in jest!
      Yes, in these times of irrational "multi-culturalism" and historical revisionism that perhaps makes sense. How about letting the indigenous population of the different countries of the world to decide what constitutes an acceptable change to their culture...

    • @miguelcoelho3877
      @miguelcoelho3877 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @M C And another thing: "Would your parent have been anti-Portuguese if they had called you Michael instead?"
      When I was born, 63 years ago, to use the English version of my Portuguese name, in Portugal, would have passed for the most complete snobbery and most certainly would have been looked down on by most people!
      Also, do note that until quite recently in the USA, if you had a non-Anglo-Saxon first name you would have been more than likely discriminated against based solely on that fact, so much so that many migrants (Jews, Irish, Poles, etc.) changed -- or were forced to change -- their original names into the closest English version they could find. So, how about that?!!

    Vasco da Gama bridge opened in 1998..Portugal was not on the map yet. Even though, we had Expo98 that year, which I believe it was the start of a new era, towards modernity. Followed by Euro 2004 that opened our eyes for how much we might had to offer and started to prepare us to the eight to ten year later boom on tourism, 2012, 2014...
    Bacalhau became a national dish due to Salazar codfish campaign, during the dictatorship. The bacalhau industry became a big slice of the portuguese economy and it was a cheap long lasting product that could feed the poverty and hunger of those times. Salazar even tried to forbid the octopus that was coming from Galiza, so that way people would have just the codfish as option. The codfish is a recent national dish, let's say.
    About the list of names, I believe that is changing. But, I know that culturally we prefer the portuguese traditional names. In general, we find kind of cheezy 'parolo' to choose a foreign name if both parents are portuguese and live in Portugal. And we have much more names than Pedro and Joao...but I totally agree that those 2 are on top5. kakak
    I love you guys! Keep up with the good work!

But there's definitely something different that you feel in people. I think the details count much more in Portugal than in big countries like Spain or France precisely because of being big countries.

    Hi! the naming system has been changed. Up to +/- three years ago there was a list of rejected/accepted names. That list derived from the law that stated (and still does state) that: names given to children should be Portuguese or adapted to the Portuguese language, phonetics, and spelling. The name cannot be gender ambiguous. Foreign names with foreign spelling were permitted if the baby was born or registered abroad, had a second nationality or any of the parents was a foreigner or had double nationality.
    The central register services would evaluate if a name followed all the referred criteria and complied names that had admitted or rejected in that list - that was quite strict, although updated every year as names would be submitted, rejected or approved.
    You couldn't have a Portuguese baby with Portuguese parents named Kevin, however, you could have a Quévim.
    However, that list does not exist anymore.
    There was a change in paradigm (greater flow of immigration also helped in this regard) and in the person in charge.
    Currently, for reference, there is a list with all the Portuguese baby's names that were registered in the last 3 years - this list is much broad as it includes Portuguese babies with foreign parents. Since there are now Portuguese citizens named Kevin or Kévin, is it fair to other citizens to be Quévim as they didn't have foreign Parents? Is Kévin not recognizable as a name and a boy's name?
    Nevertheless, due to various factors, Portuguese parents tend to be quite traditional when naming their children.
    You can check the list here - www.irn.mj.pt/IRN/sections/irn/a_registral/registos-centrais/docs-da-nacionalidade/vocabulos-admitidos-e/

    Oh, I actually suggested you #10 a while ago.😃 (And Tom Scott's video on that fun way of time travel where one arrives before departing is excatly where I got that info.😉)
    Regarding #2, Portugal is basically the most peaceful country in the world that isn't an island.😉
    On the topic of superlatives and world records, another little fun fact is that Portugal has the tallest and widest stone arch in the world (the largest from Aqueduto das Águas Livres which can be visited in Lisbon).
    There's a fact that might have to to with Portugal being such a peaceful country and that weirdly enough relates to the aqueduct: Portugal was the first country in the world to abolish the death penalty… but not before hanging the criminal that mugged and killed people by throwing them from the top of the aqueduct.
    About #19: Lisbon is the second oldest capital city in Europe after Athens. Plenty of Greek cities are older than Lisbon but when it comes to capitals one could argue that we shouldn't say that Lisbon was built on 7 hills like Rome since that example didn't exist yet to imitate. (Lisbon actually has an 8th unofficial hill which happens to be the tallest…🤫) Despite or on top of that, Lisbon is considered the first modern city in Western civilization: after being extensively destroyed in the great earthquake, tsunami and fires of 1755, the downtown of the city was rebuilt according to the rational and positivist values of the time with wide straight streets in stark contrast with the labyrinthine urban arrangement from medieval times which subsides in the Alfama neighbourhood. (The renewed city plan is also said to be ruled by a Masonic design where from the number of streets to the fact that all are orthogonal except for the curved one everything has a reason related to the initiation rituals and ascension to higher orders…)

    I actually agree w/ your friend around the 6:43 mark. If high quality base ingredients are used in a dish like Piri Piri, then no need to overpower the flavors. That being said, I've been to 36 countries and my favorite food countries: Japan, Italy, and Greece...are all places which have the same philosophy of natural flavors w/o overpowering spice. However, I do also like some spicy food from time to time such as Thai, Indian, Mexican or Schezuan food...but I just think Portuguese food is better when not too spicy.

    If the international continental geography, that determinates which country belongs to which continent. If it was made by which continental plate the countrys are stand on. Then Portugal and would be, the only country in World, that are spread for three (3) Continents. Continental Portugal is on the European plate. Azores is on American plate. Madeira is on African plate.
    Spain is in two diferent continental plates, main land in European plate, and Canary Isles on African plates, but there is nothing in American plates that belongs to Spain...
    However France has overseas territories that are spread in American and African continents that still are under French administrative jurisdition, because people from this country's decided to be that way, but are indepedendant countrys of Guadalupe, French Guiana, Martinic, Mayote, San Martin and Reunion. Those French territorys are not like Azores and Madeira (Portugal) or Canary Isles (Spain), because they are overseas, with diferent etnic cultures.So the real France and French, is only on European Continent.

      You should do a little bit of research, not all of the Azores are in the American plate, they are divided between the Euroasia and the African plate, only two of the nine islands are in the American plate--Flores and Corvo. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.

    You name it. Eating is religion in Portugal. First thing people do here when they meet friends they eat in a restaurant and after that perhaps you do some other stuff like going to bars,... In Germany it is the other way around. You meet to do some activity and after that perhaps you eat somewhere together. Also first thing I see when I enter a house or apartment in Portugal it is the kitchen. In Germany I almost saw the living room.

    I'm not sure, but if one of the child's parents is a foreigner, he can give the child a foreign name, as long as it is a name from his country.

      Almost true. My husband was born in Portugal but he has double nationality because his parents are foreigners so we were able to give our child a name that was not even in the list of allowed names in Portugal, but has no relation to both countries.

      @Márcia Pina If the other nationality have no restrictions in names, that would be normal.

      You can apply a simple trick.
      Register your child first in your contry embassy then register your child with the portuguese authorities after.

    There's the Berlenga island, with small islands near Peniche, the main one have some fisherman neighbour. Codfish have more than 100 recipes, its impossible not to like at least some, check bacalhau à bras, bacalhau com broa, bacalhau à lagareiro. Octupus à lagareiro is wonderful too. Its true that you cant call kids some names but today isnt so restricted.

    In regards to names you cant name your child with a foreign name unless one of the parents is foreign, and we have our own translations to most common english names.

    That’s interesting the impression you have about the Portuguese being more excited and energetic than the Spaniards. I’ve always heard that the Portuguese are the “Nordic of the South” owing to their distinct culture, proximity to the Atlantic, geographic isolation, deep Celtic roots and colder temper.
