I've heard stories about the North Western Railway's No. 3 over the years; supposedly he's quite a good engine, but there are those that frequently complain about him. Rumor has it he likes to stop in this forest on Sodor because he likes the trees there, but it "goes against Rule 55" or something like that.

I've heard about this incident. Labeled as one of the most horrible accidents on the north western railway alongside the great kellsthorpe disaster of '25. Apparently, in THAT incident, one engine, who has been stricken from the records as "98462." Unfortunately I haven't been able to find any records on what he might've been, but some records claim he looked similar to a Caledonian Railway class 60. rammed head-first into the back of an express train being pulled by NWR #4 "Gordon." An LNER A1 prototype. Sad to say, the three coaches at the back of the train were completely destroyed, and the people in those coaches...most of them perished that day. Though some state that at least one person survived. However, that might just be the story getting changed from person to person. James being the engine involved in the flying kipper incident I believe was also an element that was added as the story changed person to person, as records show that engine was actually an LMS 8F named "Vincent." Though James was indeed there to clear some of the wreckage. Don't quote me on that. Some of the records say James was the engine involved in the wreck.

You forgot to mention that the engine struggled to get a good start when it set of on the journey ahead, as the ice and snow not only effected the points and signals, but the rails were coated in frost. Had the rails been clear of ice and snow, NWR No. 3 might have been able to stop in time, and the Guard did indeed survive, hearing the whistle of the engine barreling to his van, jumping out the window and sustaining minor cuts and bruises, but ultimately alright

NWR No. 3 is such a weird engine. While the true history of the engine is muddled, a theory has been suggested that No. 3 was originally built on the Midland Railway by an engineer with a grudge against Gresley using stolen plans for the GNR A1. However, unbeknownst to them, Gresley had drawn the plans as reference for his friend Henry Greenly to make as a 15in locomotive based on his then current design, and due to the company’s small engine policy No 3 was built by a smaller independent workshop on the network.
As a result of this, the end result had a number of problems, including: a firebox lacked the combustion chamber of the A1 with the rear set of driving wheels and wheel arches limiting its size, four cylinders which made the engine woefully underpowered for its size underpowered, a used marine boiler was used instead of a new locomotive boiler, and the boiler plates were loose upon arrival due to rushed production. The engine was then painted in a faux-GNR livery in order to sell it off.
It's also a little known fact that No. 3 was actually painted in NWR blue at the time of the ‘Flying Kipper’ crash, being painted into the color when purchased. However, upon its rebuild, it was the first engine to be painted in NWR Green. Despite the engine's problem, coal quality proved a large factor in its ability to steam well, particularly struggling when good quality coal wasn’t available.
Finally, it should be noted that while officially listed as a Black Five, No. 3 could possibly be a hybrid of the Black Fives and the Jubilees (which were recently built at the time). Looking at the actual parts of the engine, it can be found that it contains elements of each, such as the larger drivers and third cylinder of the Jubilees and the high footplate and funnel of the Black Five. Purportedly, No. 3's rebuild was designed to give the best performance for mixed traffic, as Black Fives were primarily freight engines. A possible theory suggests that upon noting the incorrect boiler proportions of the Jubilees and the recent tests of the Type 2 boiler with British Legion, Stanier had No. 3 fitted with the first ever 2A boiler (which wasn’t as tapered as the Black 5 boiler and had only recently been designed), along with a larger smokebox to not only fit the new boiler but also fit the old smokebox door. Following positive feedback of the boiler from Sir Topham Hatt, Stanier would later trial the same boiler on the Rebuilt Jubilees.
However, this could also be a result of modifications from Crovan's Gate Works, as No. 3 has some other modifications like modified blast pipes, along with a few pieces from the original build including the original whistle.
Truly an engine with a history shrouded in mystery.

This story was really well told. Even better than in the old books. I'm shocked, however, that you did not mention the wreck at Lichfield that took place on Jan 1, 1946. That was the actual event that the Flying Kipper was based on, as on that evening, a train loaded with fish was diverted onto a siding by frozen points and crashed into, not a freight train, but a passenger train at a station, resulting in 20 deaths.
I am glad though that you mentioned Awdry's tendency to base his stories on real events. For example, I have believed for some time that the story "Percy Runs Away" was loosely based on the events at Quintinshill.

The moment I saw “Flying Kipper”, I immediately knew it was Thomas & Friends. That was too easy, Thunderbolt. 😂

You should make this a yearly thing or Maybe even a full series covering the more serious crashes from the classic and railway series in your more realistic style
Edit: this is coming from a RWS fan i could see some potential for this

I remember when I first watched the episode when I was younger I assumed all 3 got out of the brake van before the crash. Little did I know it was hinted that the guard was actually squished.

That was a very good parody of Train Disasters in real life despite April Fool's.

Henry's Flying Kipper theme is one of my favorite themes from the entire series. Great video, even tho it is an April Fool's episode. Keep up the good work. ^_^

You ought to cover James' accident when his brake blocks caught fire and he crashed into a field and was rescued by Thomas.
