Which Cow is STERILE? (what you didn't know about TWINS)

  • We've had several sets of cattle twins recently. One of the sets was a boy/girl pair, which means there is a high likelihood of the female being infertile. We had a bit of a mix up and didn't get them tagged in time, so we're going to see if we can figure out which heifer is good and which one might be a freemartin.

    “Blue sleeve action happening”
Great description to describe what clearly can not be one of the favourite chores on a homestead. It takes a practiced hand as well as toughness and integrity of character.

I've never heard of the weaner before! We are rather new to the cattle business and our welcoming our 2nd set of calves this spring, so we've separated out our twin heifers from last year into a completely different area. I'm so glad to have stumbled upon your channel!

I love that you’re making videos! I have a Brown Swiss heifer that I’m milking and I like to see how other people do their milking routine so more milking videos, please!

More milking videos coming for sure! And I love that you have a Brown Swiss! They aren't as common, but are definitely my fav.

Can I just say I'm so glad I'm not the only one who would think "sure, I'll remember which cow is which!" and then a year later have my not-so-happy-with-me husband palpating same said cows. Thanks for always being real Jill! :-)

This is fun! I'm a 39-yr-old farm kid that milked 60 holsteins with my dad and sister growing up. We were just reminiscing (Google's creepy) about twin calves and why having them was usually a bad thing for us. Then I saw this video. Not sure I've ever heard of the "freemartin" term before. Thanks for the education!

Thanks for the information about dairy twins. We have a dairy cow we are going to have bred soon. She is not known for twins but this is just good information to have filed away. :)

Was given a free Martin who was not worth it for a dairy farmer up the road but wonder of wonders 3 months ago a brand new calf was born to our jersey heifer who is now giving more milk than we can drink. Moral of the story “...but if you try sometimes you just might find you get what you need”

Not very helpful video except the theory part. Showing the external differences of both would be helpful and at what age they are noticeable. Thank you.
