Hearing Tim explain how they wanted targets to have schedules, choice on priority targets and a multitude of ways to kill opponents made me wish we got a Predator game in the vein of the Hitman series.
I honestly would love to see the idea revisited as said, a Hitman inspired game with the Predator, especially now since there isn't much big budget stealth games aside from the odd indie that shows up filling a niche as they do, plus could allow what was attempted back in 2005 actually be realized this time with more powerful hardware to boot.
Killing people “hitman style” doesn’t really seem very Predator to me. Personally, I hope to see either a Predator game similar to the Shadow Tactics/Desperados 3, or maybe a turn-based murder puzzle, like that weird John Wick game.
Could work if you at look it that way. I mean that was their initial goal originally, using the city as a hub and advancing the story by focusing on different targets. Though I think a jungle setting would be far more intriguing. Like playing MGS 3 but you’re a Predator hunting down special forces soldiers
I loved this game. 100% completed it. It wasnt perfect but it was pretty Fun. I used to replay the level with aliens over and over, just fighting hordes of aliens.
@@anakinsolo4496 yeah, it was pretty clunky, the jump was awful and the Checkpoints....ugh. But it had nice graphics, lots of cool weapons and costumes for predator, not to mention the cool visions you could use, really made you feel like a predator. All arround a pretty fun game.
They were definitely weird and took getting used to, but once you had control of what you were doing, you could pretty much tackle any level in any way you wanted. Definitely not one of the best control sets, but easily one of the most rewarding. So many options for the player.

That cut wedding slaughter flashback sequence sounded really sick, a shame the devs ran out of time to throw that one in. Even a shortened version of it would've sufficed.
When Matt was describing it, it made me think about how kickass that would be as a cold open in a movie. Like, imagine if we got a Predator movie (likely a reboot after how bad The Predator was, Prey can still be canon because it took place centuries ago, whatever) that started with the CIA infiltrating a Taliban wedding sometime in the mid-2010's. Practically everybody has at least one gun, the CIA's undercover agents prepare to take down some high-value targets... but just before the action starts, they suddenly lose contact. They switch to drone feeds, and find absolute CHAOS has broken out and the CIA has no idea why. By the time they get more men on the scene, the Predator's long gone, there's skinned corpses everywhere and the only person they find that's still alive is the bride screaming hysterically about some sort of invisible man. *That* would be how you introduce the Predator in modern times.
Man, this is one of those games I really wish the devs were given more time to cook. An open world Predator game sounds like it would be amazing if done right.
Oh wow, I had no idea this was received so poorly. I absolutely loved this game, both back in the day and now. Was probably the first game that I ever got the urge to 100% as a kid, and did. That's too bad to hear
I still have this game for my PS2, and I honestly think it has more shining moments than flaws. It had a surprising amount of love for the franchise in it, down to the start menu having Scarface sitting on the skyscraper, wearing the outfit you've equipped. The controls had some messy spots, but so did Shadow of the Colossus. It was fun, and I'm glad we got it.
I played the hell out of this game. I was surprised when I learned people didn't like it, I feel like it's one of the better Predator games. Needs to be ported at the least.
Given the hardware we have today, it would be nice if it got a remake with some of the ideas mentioned , but being that the license is held by someone else, and a lot of the original coding and assets being ( probably ) lost to time, i sadly dont see it happening anytime soon if at all.
I had this game on the PS2. I've been a huge Predator fan since I was in school and never realised anyone could dislike this game that much. I hadn't thought about Concrete Jungle for years, so thanks for the trip down memory lane Matt!
I mean, fortunately, Hunting Grounds is coming back with new content and being ported to all major systems. It's probably not exactly what you want, but controlling the predator in that and hunting the squad was pretty thrilling.
@@MattMcMusclesI know, and I appreciate the reply. I'm just not a fan of asymmetrical shooters. Hitman style, as someone here has mentioned, would be ideal.

Whilst I wouldn't call this game a classic, the reviews were too harsh on concrete jungle. I played this back in the day and had a blast! It was really obvious corners had been cut, but the gameplay was still there and conveyed the feeling of being Scarface (once you got used to the controls). A solid 7/10 in my book.
Ok, I'm starting to wonder if the AVSP movie(s) didn't have a troubled development to grant their own episode, because I could swear I hear Mat biting his tongue each time he mentions them
Might be due to how deep that rabbit hole goes. I mean, dear God as soon as the original mini-series sales were certified gold and more mini-series and comics were greenlit, Fox contemplated making as a film, buuuuuuuuuuuut as anyone who's researched that topic (or in my case, followed everything since reading about the original 'promise' of a film as an avid AVP comic fan), knows just about every kind of roadblock was in the way, especially a certain someone Fox should have NEVER hired (Tom Rothman) given the damage he did to their fantasy and Sci-Fi genre movies. In short, we're talking about a good decade-plus years of development hell oh just GETTING the movie greenlit, and even then the development hell during the production due to studio meddling (looking at you Tom!!) limiting the budget, forcing the scope of the eventual films to be less than the original attempt to adapt the beloved original mini-series. It is QUITE the rabbit hole.
I played this game, found it quite fun. My (now ex) boyfriend got genuinely angry that I was much better at it than he was. In a plot twist I’m sure nobody saw coming he turned out to be incredibly toxic, controlling, manipulative, and abusive.
Aw man I remember watching your lets play of Concrete Jungle way back when! The game honestly didn't look that bad and had some really cool ideas! Thanks for showing us wha happun
I played through this a few years ago for the first time and it's the video game equivalent of watching a really well done B-movie. It has a lot of interesting ideas and some fun moments or neat parts, but ultimately is a bit hokey (even for the era) and there's some frustrating parts or is very clearly something that got cut in half multiple times. I dunno if I'd play it again, but it's worth at least once.
I remember I requested you to make a video on this game months ago and haven't been back to your channel until now. Great to see this underrated classic getting some attention. I can't tell you how many hours i put into this game as a kid. I wasn't able to beat it until I got older because the contols were so hard for no reason. If any game needs a remake, it's Predator Concrete Jungle.
I'm glad to hear Grant Morrison is just as good a writer for comics as he is for video game stories. I know it's different mediums but the same principles apply. Loved his Batman and X-Men runs Great video as always Matt!!
I loved Concrete Jungle when I was younger, I still have a copy and a PS2 I boot up every now and again. It was a game I could load up on the PS2 and just have a great time on playing. Hearing all of this makes me appreciate the game so much more. I wish we'd get a remake or just another game in the same vein as Concrete Jungle. The Predator Hunting Grounds game has some fun moments, but I want something single player with a solid storyline, not another asymmetrical multiplayer live service.
I liked this game. My brother got it when it came out, but couldn't get used to the controls. I had a go and, after some time, I did get used to the control scheme, and ended up really enjoying playing this game. Thanks for the awesome video on it Matt! 😊👍💜
@@KevHarrison13 - Hey, it was a different time and gave me a laugh. Definitely had a Bladerunner vibe and I didn’t notice when I first played this either!
Matt, thank you so much for this. I've had a soft spot for this game since I rented it back in 2005. My Scarface Predator figure still sits proudly above the the other figures in my collection. 😊
Back in my childhood years I sometimes had a difficult time telling whether a game was bad or if I was just bad _at_ the game. In retrospect it had a way of making some games I realize are bad today loom large in my memory as almost masterpieces I just didn't think I was able to process. No game is a better example of that than this one. I still have the soundtrack on my phone. The name Borgia still sends chills down my spine. If you remade this game based on the rose tinted glasses I have for it, you'd have that 96 _today._
Man, I remember playing this on my PS2. I was just a kid then no older than 12 or something and still had a lot of fun with it. Just the fact that Predator got a game at all for PS2 was enough for me.
I remember playing this game so much when it came out and loved it. To this day I wish that atleast you could find it on PC or as a retro title for consoles.
I was like 4 when my dad bought this at a Schnucks Video's Club I remember watching him play the game and just being at awe at all the gore. I also remember he was stumped at the second level's open world environment and had no idea what to do. Then I inherented the old XBOX and owned the game and then I was stumped at the second level and didn't know what to do. It wasn't until 2017 with the help of TH-cam playthroughs did I finally knew what to do and beat the game. The game is flawed as hell but my god does it give me nostalgia.
He also worked on a Battlestar Gallactica game around the same time too. And this was just either before he moved to DC, or was about to have a bigger impact at DC, I cant remember, but he was in talks with them about stuff he couldnt tell us about.
Great video! This has always been one of my favourite games from the PS2 era, so this deep dive was great to watch. I'd love to see what a Predator game could look like as a proper open world experience, especially with how great they can be nowadays. Imagining hunting not just across Earth but across the galaxy, collecting trophies from everywhere. That would be epic.
I have such fond memories of this game. It was far from perfect but I sank hours into unlocking all the hidden items and facing off against the monster squad. Would be awesome to see a revisit or remake of this game one day
This game was great. I dont know what they reviewers were smoking on criticizing using all the buttons and awas not clunky at all. In fact, using everything the control allowed you to have acces to every tool in your arsenal at worst at 2 presses which was very advantageous in the worst moments. It has issue for sure but only one was really bad and it was the jumping, that is the only thing that you cant simply defend on how mediocre it felt, specially for the time limit challenges outside of the campaign.
You mention the Scarface Predator having gotten an action figure, like a year or two ago another design from that game, the Stone Heart Predator also got an action figure from NECA, reusing some sculpt from the oversize Assassin Predator from The Predator
Having played this game when it released. It was one of my favourite PS2 games on that console. The gameplay wasn’t great but it holds a special place in my heart as a young teenager. Loved the Alien cameo. It was the first time console players got to play as a Predator in a 3D world, able to roam a city, killing anyone in the most Predator way possible.
I love how Matt says "if you're of a certain age you've played one of these games" and then names 6 games I haven't even heard of after being extensively into video games for my whole life
Im actually kind of shocked that, in all my years of hearing about this game and watching reviews, I have never known that Xenomorphs make an appearance until just now.
I rented this back when it came out but never reached the part with the xenomorphs. That would have blown my socks off if I had reached it. I remember the game being pretty hard.
This is one of the few titles I didn't know had bad critic ratings. I always had fond memories of playing this at my friend's house in high school playing this game. It was just a good time, and you can tell the people involved loved what they were making.
I know the game had next to no actual attention put on it, but I highly suggest you look up what happened on Immortals of Aveum, a $125 million dollar game that nobody bought.
Open world games were definitely the style at the time, but it wasn't a requirement for a game to be successful, and in the often crunch heavy world of licensed games, that's a risk better not taken.
This game, while flawed has always been a gem to me. As a huge fan of Predator the choice to make a third person stealth/action game with all of the gadgets and stuff was incredibly ambitious for the time. I loved replaying the levels to unlock the alternate Predator costumes, visiting the trophy room, etc. The writing was great, it was overall a fun story with a cool lead Predator. I wish they would remake this game or reboot it somehow. Imagine a Predator game like this that plays and looks more like Shadow of Mordor!
My local Blockbuster's only Concrete Jungle copy got stolen before I had a chance to play it and they never bothered to replace it or take the display case off the shelf.
Predator Concrete Jungle is BEAST. Granted the camera was too close to the Predator at times.. this can be overlooked. This game has tons of replay value. The costumes, sounds of the vision visor swipes is great and the many weapons with upgrade options sold me. The ritual challenges keep your skills sharp and test just how accurate a player can be with the controller. The story's there and offers rich lore to the predator universe. Thanks to all who helped put in the time and development of this great product!
When I worked at a local Target between 2009 & 2012 I eventually became often put in the Electronics section, and one day a random copy of Predator: Concrete Jungle for the PS2 appeared on the shelves. By this point there were absolutely no PS2 games being sold at Target, so it was obviously something that was just found tucked away in the storage area in the back, and someone just decided to put it on the shelves. I always considered buying it, if only for the novelty of it, but it would always ring up for $30 or $40, so I never actually bought it.
I have this game and absolutely loved it. I know there were huge ambitions but I enjoyed. It also had great replay potential. If you knew how to hit your objectives, it had speed run potential too.
I love this game, I even replayed it recently.... Never imagined it could have been so much more. Hopefully, one day we get another good Predator Game.
First time I heard the name Lucretia. And then met someone with that name and was the first to pronounce it correctly. Man. This was a fun game for what it was.
Still one of my top 3 favorite Predator games! Lord the hours upon hours of fun of just running around skinning unworthy foes was mad fun. Imo this game was a mad underrated gem for the time when there wasn't much Alien or Predator games out. Would love to see a remake for it. Love the info that comes with your content, great work!!!
I remember this game being a bit hard to find. I was a kid and my Uncle was nice enough to drive around to 3 or 4 places until we eventually found the game. I never got very far in it as I did feel it was mechanically dense and I don't remember having a clear direction for progression. I should try and replay it!
I'm actually a fan of this game, but even I could admit it had a stupid amount of flaws. Thanks for explaining why things such as overused environments and the strung together narrative are part of the game.
Knowing Grant was involved in the writing just, makes so much sense. Might just be nostalgia talking but I liked how it turned out the despite the lacking open world and “dense” mechanics. It really did make you feel like a predator.
I really loved this game, perhaps the controls were a bit clunky, but that added to the challenge and made me smile every time I beat a bonus mission, got all the various weapons and costumes. The Dark Blade clan costume was my favorite. Critics don’t know everything. Would love to see this as a movie, or set of movies, maybe a trilogy! Part 1 is him hunting the gangs and ends with his capture. Part2: would be set in the gangster era before he lost his eye Part 3: he escape and hunting down the rest of the Borgia family

I actually played this game back in the day. I thought it was a great game for the time.
This game was amazing I want a remake or sequel so bad I would buy a special edition in heartbeat
Do a Wha Happun? on Battlefield Earth. That movie was one of the biggest blunders of this century that it should be made into a Wha Happun episode.
Classic LP
Open world games were definitely the style at the time, but it wasn't a requirement for a game to be successful, and in the often crunch heavy world of licensed games, that's a risk better not taken.
This one was a guilty pleasure because I had such a good time playing it. City Hunter skin ftw 😂
I just played this all the way through last summer
This game, while flawed has always been a gem to me. As a huge fan of Predator the choice to make a third person stealth/action game with all of the gadgets and stuff was incredibly ambitious for the time. I loved replaying the levels to unlock the alternate Predator costumes, visiting the trophy room, etc. The writing was great, it was overall a fun story with a cool lead Predator. I wish they would remake this game or reboot it somehow. Imagine a Predator game like this that plays and looks more like Shadow of Mordor!
This game had so much potential. Would love to see a new one closer to the original vision.
Glad you did this one
Bro, the theme for predator 2 on genesis was fucking awesome. Thanks for including that
When I worked at a local Target between 2009 & 2012 I eventually became often put in the Electronics section, and one day a random copy of Predator: Concrete Jungle for the PS2 appeared on the shelves.
I remember being so hyped for this after playing the all the AvP games
First a Re:View of Predator 2 and now this? What a beautiful day for Predator fans!
I've been waiting for this day my entire life. I've always loved this game and wished we could get more Predator games like this
He said Derby right. I love this show no matter what, but it's the little attention to detail that I really enjoy.
Ah yes, the tale of Jerry the Predator.
I have this game and absolutely loved it. I know there were huge ambitions but I enjoyed. It also had great replay potential. If you knew how to hit your objectives, it had speed run potential too.
I love this game, I even replayed it recently.... Never imagined it could have been so much more. Hopefully, one day we get another good Predator Game.
fantastic piece! Really enjoy the deeper level content and first hand engagement with developers. Matt McMuscles, dang ol' journalist!
Man, I loved this game so much. The Xenos scared the crud out of me and had to make me think about how to tackle them.
More sci-fi horror games should reference Great Expectations somehow.
Predator concrete jungle is awesome tbh it’s a really fun game cool costumes and the weapons are fun too
First time I heard the name Lucretia.
Thanks for explaining why things such as overused environments and the strung together narrative are part of the game.
man that eurocom logo felt like it was everywhere back in the day
I remember this game growing up and honestly as a fan of predator series this game was kind of fun in my opinion.
Hey matt can you please make a what happened video on the live action Kim possible movie?
Part2: would be set in the gangster era before he lost his eye
Part 3: he escape and hunting down the rest of the Borgia family
never forget Jerry The Predator
He's the boss of this city.
