it has too sharp harse sound, i dont like it, and the settings could be stored in the camera menu , also i dontl ike the logo on it, the material, and the biggest gripe for me is, that it is too tall and too much unused space, it could be shorter, andprotoding out in the direcstion of the lens much loever than than like here, and also the fixing mechanisum is to big, could be much more compact, andmaking the materialin front of the hot shoe in front of the viewfinder, and the soound is really mediocer, i dont know what to use, maybe iill stick with the video micro when i need it........

Thanks for providing a review. I’ve been waiting to get my hands on the predecessor but it was always sold out. I found the convenience of no cables, batteries and compact design the sellable feature. For much serious projects that require stellar audio, I’d probably look elsewhere. All in all, preordering first thing tomorrow morning.

I wish Sony would have taken the opportunity to allow stereo, and a bi-directional mode ala the Deity D4 Duo. I have an ECM-B1M but the Deity is much better for talking to people on-camera and then having a balanced audio in post. Perhaps this is possible to add through firmware? The in-microphone processing is pretty powerful and it would otherwise be perfect.
Posting here in hopes that they see!

Thanks for the video Gordon. I own the ecm-b1m and love it, only mic I currently use on my a7siii and a74. I don’t remember you talking about the ATT settings in the video (I probably missed it). Do you typically set it at 0db, 10db or 20db? I find 0db in most situations works great but interested in your opinion. Thank you.

I have an opportunity to grab one of these brand new in box, for around $90.. but from every review I listen to this thing in headphones, it sounds bad... no warmth whatsoever, thin and tinny.. my Comica VM20 sounds 5x better than this thing, but I'm still curious to see if everyone doing these video's just have bad settings.. Another reason why I use Sony for my paid work. Great products that are easy to use and relatively affordable. Rode's stuff with wires is very good but the wires and ports are just one more possible point of failure. This is pretty foolproof.

Excellent video as usual Gordon and forensically detailed. I was listening wearing headphones, because strangely as it may seem, my wife doesn't like watching the same videos as I do! Whilst the sound was very good, I couldn't hear much of (or any) a stereo effect.

That‘s superbly helpful info, Gordon, thanks so much for doing this! I absolutely love the way you put this mic through its practical paces, makes all the sense in the world. I watched and listened to it on the latest iPad Pro so that was quite an audible experience for me, especially since I‘m also the owner of the Sony A4IV, and a good mic is indeed the next item to complete my camera bag. I had earmarked the older, bigger version and was not quite sure what to make of the differences based on a news alert from B&H just recently. To be honest, I would have loved to hear you speak a bit more to the differences about these two mics, particularly in terms of whether the newer version shows any signs of lesser recording quality versus the older model or if the new one is actually overall better and cheaper at the same time? So, right now I am set to buy the new one but will do some more research on making sure I‘m not missing out on something „better“ for the extra hundred bucks. Once again, fantastic work on your end, thanks so much!!

@@firpofutbol I don't think it would work in a cage, unless you could access the hotshoe. I think Canon once made hotshoe cable extenders, but I'm not sure if Sony does, or if they did, whether they supported the pins on the multi interface shoe. It's really designed for simple setups.

There are many documented issues on youtube regarding the shock mount flaw that renders these series of Sony microphones (ECM-B10, ECM-B1M, ECM-G1) during handheld filming. Many reviewers have stated and provided examples that the rocking of the shock mount during handheld filming is picked up by the microphone and ruins the footage which would be very difficult to remove in post production. I wish it wasn't true since the ECM-B10 would otherwise be a near ideal shotgun microphone (at least for my use case). IMO, Sony needs to redesign the shock mount to offer gen 2 equivalents for each and discontinue the current ECM line of models stated above. Unfortunately, the ECM-B10 was released over three years ago and Sony continues to use the flawed shock mount design.

Such a strange product offering; almost identical to its predecessor, and almost certainly identical-sounding because its beam-forming technology (as a shortcut compromise around the science of a long-barrel shotgun using slotted "interference tube" technology) isn't substantially improved or degraded via four or eight elements. This smells of Sony's usual practice to launch several versions of products to tier their profit margins, money-grabbing for the high end. And it should be clarified that this is a monaural microphone, despite recording into stereo: thus the non-directional, omnidirectional mode would have been better/less tinny/more realistic by leveraging the multiple elements into a stereo array.

  • @leledreher

It certainly sounds different, but depends what you're listening on. It's definitely a great option for $99, but the wind muffler I used is an optional accessor and pretty huge

How does it compare to the B1M?

    • @cameralabs

It's smaller, cheaper and has half the capsules.

I was hoping for an improved version from Sony...but just like the ECM-B1 they haven't improved the anti-shock mechanism. Such a wasted opportunity the mic sounds soo good.

I guess it depends how much you'll be shaking it around. I think I mostly got away with it in my vlog, but I was being gentle

Gordon, I appreciate your work. I need your input on the Canon R5. What is the best setting to minise sensor dust : Electronic or Mechanical option. Thank you for your help.

Just clean the sensor yourself using a sensor cleaning swab. Its super easy to do. It’s better to clean regularly, don’t let dust bunnies live on the sensor too long.

I just use a few skooshes of air from a blower with the sensor exposed and camera pointing down.

My thoughts? When camera manufacturers produce microphones, the audio quality is rarely super impressive. And even though Sony has been producing great audio gear for decades, this one is no exception, I think. I mean it isn't all that bad, but even the cheap Røde sounded better to my ears.
And this proprietary system where it won't be usable on anything but Sony cameras, I find appalling and disgusting, and I would never buy such a microphone! (I don't mind a small cable, and for the Røde Videomic Go II I bought one of Rødes little spiral cables which I like better than the flat and rather long one that comes with the microphone).
The electronic noise reduction of the Sony sounded, as you said, as if you were recording in a bathroom - especially at the beach.
By the way, I doubt it that the omnidirectional setting would be suitable for interviews, as you would normally be much closer to the camera than the other person and therefore much louder. But perhaps that could be addressed in post, if you don't mind doing some extra work, or you could place yourself further from the camera. The other microphone settings would hardly be much better, as they make a person behind the microphone sound muffled. Relatively best might be the super directional setting, as it does pick up a little more from the rear than the cardioid setting, and much less from the sides.

Can you use this mic also on non-Sony cameras too?!

No. I talked about this several times in the video, did you watch it?
