  • Following the Montreal Screwjob at the 1997 WWF Survivor Series and his departure to WCW, Bret Hart finally returned to WWE in 2010, making his first appearance on Monday Night Raw in well over a decade in the process. From there he went on to wrestle Vince McMahon at WrestleMania 26, main event SummerSlam, become Raw General Manager and even win the United States title. Join Tom Campbell in Breaking Down Bret Hart's Disastrous 2010 WWE Return.

Real fans were just happy to see him out there in the ring again, the man gave everything he had to wrestling and suffered through so much tragedy and heartbreak. Who cares if you couldn’t perform at the level he could? Doctors were saying he might not be able to walk again and yet he still made it out there and entertained us.

Facts! This was more of an epilogue and I'm pretty sure 99% of us saw it like that. I'm surprised anyone can see it differently. It's like Sting in AEW. We know it's over. He's just there to end his story the way he wants it to end. Bret also wanted to do something to make a final chapter that would end on a less bitter note. And I bet Vince also wanted that. And the wrestlers know their limits and they know that this is done just to come full circle and leave gracefully. The only wrestler who doesn't see these comebacks that way is Ric Flair cause he's still 20 in his mind.

@@henrikschmidt3964 I respect him for wanting to and having the balls to do it despite his issues, but on the other side of the same coin, you're totally right. Brets time was behind him and he hadn't even worked in a ring for years by then. He hadn't worked a match since January of 2000 by time he went back to WWE. I respect him ending things on his terms though. His initial exit from the business was very depressing.

I don't think they are doing that. The criticism is fair and measured. Most of the blame should go to Vince who I presume ran the creative. It's quite funny, but in December 2009 I saw Bret at a small indie show here in Germany. It was a very personal atmosphere. I shook his hand and got his autograph. Just six months later everything had changed. I saw him again - this time with WWE. Same town, but the arena was ten times bigger. My personal highlight was when he put Chris Jericho in a sharpshooter that night. It felt kinda surreal to see this happening right in front of me.

Who would’ve thought the greatest professional wrestler to ever live would survive a life-threatening stroke that almost paralyzed him in 2002 then years later, return to WWE, and have a match with Vince McMahon, without having wrestled in years, and still dealing with the effects of the stroke would go on to have a not so good match with a none wrestler

The match itself at Mania was… Ok, it was a disaster let’s be real. But his return as a whole was a net positive. It’s the Hitman for Christ’s sake, and after a decade and a half of bad blood he finally put down the past and made was willing to make amends. That’s far from disastrous if you ask me.

When I was watching the WrestleMania match with my friend, I turned to him and said, "Was the goal of this match make me feel sympathy for Vince McMahon?" I cannot think of a worse booked match. Holy shit.
Also, I saw someone describe Bret's attire as "A man in his 50s dressed like Dennis the Menace." It was great that he came back, and that first night was incredible, but they made it really awkward and bad.
Early 2010's WWE was their On Their Bullshit Era where they buried their own roster for part timers, and sabotaged every hot angle like a kid dumping a Coke into an outlet. Vince had zero idea what he was doing. You could almost say this company was saved by Punk/Danielson/The Shield because holy shit did they have no idea how to make a new star or a coherent storyline.

For us that look up to the man and the work he did. The Hero that we all still let him be for us , some of it was well ..pro wrestling entertainment, but to see in his eyes , how he finally kinda just let some of that stuff go. That's not disastrous , that's like at the end of the new God of War, when Kratos finally lets the bandages go off his arms , The Hitman finally let a bit of this baggage go. So many smarks will talk about 'Well what about his comments about this or that ' later and ya that's the Internet, insert trolls whenever , but for me?
    MY Hero.
Bret Hart coming back and hugging Shawn Michaels in the ring? And then knowing later it was real and legit? After knowing all that history? Its like a part of my heart healed as well. From the end of Wrestling with Shadows to that moment, it's taken a long time and a lot of things have happened, but I got to see my Hero come back , come back to the WWE, come back in Chicago THEN Montreal and Calgary ...and then Wrestlemania ? And to see him just BEAT the LIVING PISS , at that age and knowing what he's been through , I didn't need no obvious Bret Hart clinic. I wanted my hero to BEAT THE LIVING CRAP OUT OF THAT EVIL HEARTLESS ASSHOLE THAT SCREWED HIM OVER!! And I got that. Of course it wasn't what it was. That's how it always has been kinda with the Hitman, never got the chance to really see a lot of things happen , either ever or too late.
He's the best there is, the Best there was and the best there ever WILL BE. PERIOD. AND CULTAHOLIC , YOU KNOW IT!
and if you don't like it , to quote the Hitman 'Tough Shit'

The Montreal Screwjob was indeed Bret Screwing Bret. Bret forgets wrestling is fake, he thought he was actually a world-beating champion. But outside of that, the guy has copped it in life and didn't deserve all the shit that happened to him. His brother dying, his parents dying, his divorce, his health issues and WCW totally wasting him.... he deserved better.

    • @phabiorules
      @phabiorules 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

To be fair, he had to deal with Shawn micheals who was a prick. He didn’t want to lose the belt in Montreal to Shawn, but eventually he relented and decided to. He then went up and said to Shawn “hey just letting you know, I will drop the title, you don’t need to worry about anything” to which micheals responded “cool, I wouldn’t have done the same for you.”
That ticked off Brett to the point in which he refused to do it. His mindset was “I have no problems dropping the belt the HBK or in Montreal, but not at the same time.”

This video was very well researched, it reminded me of the timeline of events in 2010 and a couple things I had forgotten. I must disagree with your take, however, of 2010 being a disasterous year for Bret. First we have to consider the state of his health at the time, being a stroke survivor. His physicality in the ring was further limited by his Lloyds of London insurance policy. Despite those two major limitations, Bret gave us great moments in 2010. Just him appearing in a WWE ring again was HUGE. Burying the hatchet with Shawn was great, and even the storyline with Vince was fine. You cant just book the match at Mania three months away, they needed a storyline to keep us entertained along the way. The match itself was overbooked with the Hart family again due to the physical limitations, but we got what we wanted, which was Bret beating up Vince, making him tapout to the sharpshooter, and the Harts screwing Vince. The match was never expected to be a masterpiece. I loved the rub Bret gave the Hart Dynasty. Great feel good moment against the Miz for thr US title. His involvement in the Nexus feud and match at Summerslam was well done. Nice to see a dream team up with John Cena as they both have a lot of mutual respect. The celebration of Bret as MSG was very well deserved. Using him in the European tours was great given how popular Bret has always been in Europe. So while there were some minor hiccups, Brets 2010 run was very successful in my book.

The fact he just holds that triple jump mug up in his hand for the whole 1:16:15 without getting an achy arm and doesn't take one swig of his brew just shows what a power house he really is... must be from knockin one out on a daily basis. 🤔🤪

I watched wrestling as a kid, between 1990 and mid-98 when I totally checked out right before the screw job, when Hart Foundation were huge and Bret was a heel champ in US. When I got back into wrestling in 2019 you can imagine my surprise to find that Davey Boy Smith was dead, Owen was dead, Pillman was dead, Neidhart was dead, Bret had got screwed gone to WCW and had a stroke. But the biggest shock of all was that Shawn was a beloved, God-fearing family man. I only caught Bret's 2010 run on TH-cam in 2020. I loved the reconciliation with Shawn, their rivalry enhanced both their careers immeasurably. Everything else about that run (apart from Bret being paid) was forgettable and uninspired. One thing it did clearly do though was help Bret get to a better, less bitter, less egotistical place in life. His arrogance and bitterness before that was insufferable. I say that even though he is my favourite wrestler off all time (along with Davey, Owen and Shawn).

if you know what bret went through. it was a miracle and the only bad thing about it was his music. him just walking after having a stroke was a blessing. getting in the ring and cutting promos, beating guys up and slapping on the sharpshooter was cool to see. it meant a lot to bret and his true fans knew it. we let the fact that he couldn't take a bump slide. we let the bad storyline slide. all that didn't matter. it was for bret to get closure and walk off on his own volition

I’m not going to lie. I started watching wrestling I think the day after the wrestlemania stone cold beat hbk. I never knew who Bret was when he came back. WWE did such a good job erasing him it was hard for me to know the legend he was. It was the same when wcw was bought, when hbk returned, and etc. but Bret to me is the greatest in ring performer of all time and top 5 wrestler ever after watching old videos!

I find this to not be completely fair gonna be honest you can call it disastrous if you'd like but that doesnt really cover the scope of the situation. Bret couldnt do anything phsycial due to the stroke and his insurance policy. But that run wasnt about Bret's physical capabilities. It was about letting a man who'd carried much anger and resentment a chance at true reconciliation. That 2010 run not only allowed Bret to bury the hatchet with Vince and the WWE officially but it also allowed him a chane for he and Shawn to come together and put away the feud that had burned so bright between them. So when Bret made that walk out to Wrestlemania in front of those who loved him. It wasnt as the "Hitman" ready to go one last round. It was as Bret Hart the man, ready to say goodbye to what he truly loved and let go of the anger that he'd held so tight for so long and maybe finally capture a chance at true inner peace. And that is worth all the titles in the world.

There's fan footage of Bret in 6-man tags on live events in 2010, leading up to Survivor Series and he was wrestling much more aggressively, even doing the front elbow of the second turnbuckle. What we saw on tv was post-stroke, obviously, but it was actually even more toned down because he'd already cashed in his Lloyds of London policy, and had to work extra light to avoid having to pay the policy back. Non-televised events, tho, Bret could still go.
